15 NHL players to take clubs to salary arbitration (AP)

Center Brooks Laich and defenseman Shaone Morrisonn of the Washington Capitals were among 15 players who elected to take their teams to salary arbitration, the NHL Players' Association said Saturday. The only other club to have two players go that route were the Minnesota Wild, who are set to have hearings with forwards Pierre-Marc Bouchard and Stephane Veilleux.

The Capitals got half of what they wanted but a big chunk of what they needed as the free agent market opened earlier this week.

Goalie Cristobal Huet bolted for Chicago and more money, but the Caps replaced him with Jose Theodore and re-signed defenseman Mike Green. Losing Green and Huet would have made for a very bad day in Washington.

Huet reportedly wanted three years at $15 million, which the Caps agreed to. But he wanted to see what the market would bring, and the Blackhawks offered him an extra year (and a total of $21 million), which the Caps didn't want to match.

That move is understandable as Huet would be 36 by end of a four-year deal and Theodore (31) has been a solid NHL goalie for years.

The Washington Capitals signed free-agent center Keith Aucoin to a two-year contract Thursday. The 29-year-old Aucoin split last season between the Carolina Hurricanes and the AHL's Albany River Rats. He played 38 games for Carolina, scoring five goals with eight assists. Aucoin played college hockey at Norwich, where he became the school's career leader in goals (114) and assists (124).

The Washington Capitals on Wednesday added a pair of free agents from the AHL, signing right wing Graham Mink and defenseman Tyler Sloan. Sloan, 27, spent the last two seasons playing with the Hershey Bears, the Capitals' AHL affiliate. He had three goals and 16 assists in 124 games. Mink, 29, was a member of Hershey's 2006 Calder Cup champion team.
