The Toronto Maple Leafs have placed goalie Vesa Toskala and forward John Mitchell on injured reserve and recalled goalie Joey MacDonald and forward Christian Hanson on Tuesday. Mitchell suffered a knee injury in Monday night's 4-3 overtime loss to the New York Islanders. Toskala, who had to leave the game after tweaking a groin injury, has a 1-4-2 mark with a 3.91 GAA and .865 save percentage.

The Maple Leafs and Blackhawks are shadowing each other as they deliberate a possible trade to get Toronto back a high draft pick and Chicago some cap relief.

The crux of the matter is multi-year extensions for Chicago star forwards Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews and defenseman Duncan Keith. The deals have been worked out, but they can't be announced until the club has created enough cap room to fit the salaries under next year's cap.

Chicago needs to shed a couple of million dollars in salary, and that could mean defenseman Brent Sopel, who has a $2.33 million US cap hit and is not as valuable to the Hawks as a top-six defenseman as he would be to as a potential top-four in Toronto.
