Defenseman Mike Lundin figured he played his last game in a Lightning uniform on Dec. 10 of last season in Buffalo. Lundin was scratched the next game and sent down to the minors the day after that.

As the Lightning continued to retool their defensive core over the summer, adding names such as Mattias Ohlund, Victor Hedman, Kurtis Foster and Matt Walker, Ludin saw how far down the depth chart he had fallen. Coming off his entry-level deal, Lundin, who played in 81 games as a rookie in 2007-08 and appeared in the Young Stars game on All-Star weekend, hoped to be moved to another team.

When he wasn't traded, he figured he was done with the organization after he signed a one-year deal just before the start of training camp and failed to secure a spot on the roster.
