The Pittsburgh Penguins signed forward Janne Pesonen and defenseman Ben Lovejoy to one-year contracts on Monday. Pesonen, of Suomussalmi, Finland, had 34 goals and 44 assists with Oulu Karpat to lead the Finnish Elite League last season. The Penguins were not shocked to lose right wing Marian Hossa to another team. But they were shocked he signed a one-year deal with the Detroit Red Wings.

Hossa, who starred for the Penguins with 12 goals and 26 points in 20 playoff games, signed with the Red Wings on Wednesday as an unrestricted free agent. He declined three offers from the Penguins at more than $7 million annually. The Penguins had pitched five-, six- and seven-year deals.

Hossa will earn $7.45 million with the Red Wings, who he said give him the best chance at winning the Stanley Cup.

Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, who served as Hossa's primary center during his brief three-month run in Pittsburgh, made several calls to Hossa Wednesday morning in an attempt to sway his decision.
