The Flyers made just a small ripple in the July 1 free agent pool, signing versatile forward Glen Metropolit to a two-year, $2 million contract and defenseman Ossi Vaananen to a one-year deal worth $1 million.

The Flyers also re-signed defenseman Randy Jones to a two-year deal worth $2.75 million a season and enforcer Riley Cote to a three-year deal worth $550,000 per year.

The signings pushed the Flyers about $1 million over the salary cap. The Flyers can rectify the situation by putting defenseman Derian Hatcher and his $3.5 million salary on the long-term injury list, or they can shed salary through a trade.

The 23-year-old Carter was taken 11th overall by the Flyers in the 2003 draft and he has 66 goals and 132 points in 225 career games.
