The Rangers no longer are Jaromir Jagr's team. The torch officially has been passed to Scott Gomez and Chris Drury.

In two dizzying days of free agency, the Rangers cleared out Jagr (signed with a Russian team, Avangard Omsk) and agitating winger Sean Avery (went to the Dallas Stars) and pretty much precluded the return of Brendan Shanahan by shelling out millions to sign defenseman Wade Redden and winger Markus Naslund.

Throw in a trade that sent defensemen Fedor Tyutin and Christian Backman to Columbus to acquire enigmatic talent Nikolai Zherdev, and the Rangers will open the 2008-09 season in Prague with a strikingly different look than the one that skated off the ice in Pittsburgh in early May.

The 23-year-old Fritsche had 10 goals and 12 assists in 69 games with the Columbus Blue Jackets last season. The 6-foot-1, 206-pounder had 29 goals and 34 assists in 206 career games with Columbus. The Parma, Ohio, native was originally Columbus' second-round choice, 46th overall, in the 2003 draft.
