Canadiens general manager Bob Gainey spent more than a week calling Mats Sundin and his agent, J. P. Barry, and now he's hoping the next call will be from Sundin.

"Mats has made it clear that he wants some space and we respect that," Gainey said at a July 3 press conference to announce that veteran tough Georges Laraque has signed a three-year contract worth $4.5 million.

Gainey secured the exclusive negotiating rights to Sundin before the free-agency period began on July 1 but the former Toronto Maple Leafs captain said he didn't want to be rushed into a decision on his future. Forward Georges Laraque signed a three-year, $4.5-million contract with the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday. The 31-year-old Laraque spent last season with the Eastern Conference champion Pittsburgh Penguins. The 6-foot-3, 243-pound Laraque had four goals and nine assists and 141 penalty minutes in 71 games last season.
