A popular player will be wearing his familiar No. 19 jersey on the ice when the Avalanche opens training camp on Sept. 20.

Much to the relief of general manager Francois Giguere, hcoach Tony Granato, Avalanche players and the team's fans, captain Joe Sakic chose to return for a 20th NHL season.

It took over three months for Sakic, 39, to make a decision on his playing future –- would he re-sign with the Avalanche or retire? -– after the 2007-08 season ended with a second-round playoff loss to the Detroit Red Wings.

Finally, after much soul-searching, the franchise's all-time leading scorer made up his mind and signed a one-year, $6 million contract on Aug.
