The Carolina Hurricanes knew the price for a quality defenseman would be heavy, and so the team's fans were dealt a blow when left wing Erik Cole was traded to the Edmonton Oilers on July 1.

In turn, the Hurricanes received defenseman Joni Pitkanen, who they hope will help stabilize a defense that nearly had been gutted by the departures of Glen Wesley and Bret Hedican.

"In order to get what your needs are, you have to give something up," general manager Jim Rutherford said.

Pitkanen, 24, was obtained as a restricted free agent and he was under contract the next day with a three-year deal. The Hurricanes will pay Pitkanen $3.5 million, $4 million and $4.5 million the next three seasons.
