The Hurricanes have pretty much designated two players as their franchise guys. Now both of them are facing injuries, and the team's immediate future looks dismal at best.

The latest blow came Saturday night when goalie Cam Ward left with a leg cut caused by the skate of Columbus' Rick Nash. Ward was taken to a hospital, and his status is uncertain going forward. The laceration required stitches and an overnight hospital stay.

The Hurricanes are in a 12-game winless stretch, marking the longest drought in franchise history. That span includes an 0-3 record without center Eric Staal, who's nursing an upper-body injury.

Staal and Ward have long-term contracts and are expected to carry the team.
