Ryan Miller played too much last season. He appeared in 76 games, including 34 straight after Jan. 21. The Sabres don't want to wear him down that much this year, so they needed a backup goaltender they could trust. They think they got one.

The Sabres signed nine-year veteran Patrick Lalime to a two-year, $2 million contract July 1.

"We had a list together of potential backup goaltenders for Ryan, and he was certainly near the top of the list," Sabres general manager Darcy Regier said. "We think he'll be a very good fit here."

Lalime, who has undergone back and knee surgeries during the past three years, stayed healthy last season with Chicago. He played 32 games last year, going 16-12-2 with a 2.82 goals-against average and .897 save percentage.

The San Jose Sharks traded veteran defenseman Craig Rivet to the Buffalo Sabres on Friday for two second-round draft choices. The Sharks also gave up a seventh-round pick in 2010 along with Rivet, the longtime Montreal defenseman who joined the Sharks in a trade late in the 2006-07 season. San Jose gets a second-round draft choice in each of the last two drafts.
