Buffalo's recent slump—three losses in four games—is the first real adversity the team has encountered this year. How the Sabres respond will go a long way toward telling if they will be true contenders or indifferent pretenders as the season rolls along.

The Sabres were dismantled by the Flyers in a loss to Philadelphia on Friday night and had no answer for the Bruins' relentless forecheck in Saturday's loss at Boston. That, says forward Mike Grier, can't happen.

"We have to have everyone competing in the dirty areas, and guys bumping bodies," he said. "You don't have to kill guys, but you have to be willing to show each other that you are willing to stick your nose in there and go to war."
