John Anderson summed up how his team should feel after Sunday's loss to the Lightning with one word: embarrassed.

Yet again, Atlanta got off to a slow start, fell behind and had to rely on a late rally just to force overtime. While Anderson said his team played well in the third period, goalie Ondrej Pavelec, who was bombarded with 40 shots in the game, wasn't as generous and credited his teammates with just 10 minutes of hard work.

In the NHL, a win is earned over 60 minutes. For some reason, Anderson's young team has been having a hard time grasping that concept.

"It's a game we had to have," the coach said. "It was a must win. It didn't look like a must win."

A bit of bad weather was all Ilya Kovalchuk needed to make a quicker return to the Atlanta Thrashers. Out since Oct. 24 when the Thrashers captain broke his right foot when struck by a puck, Kovalchuk came back Thursday night and led the Thrashers to a 5-3 victory over the New York Rangers. On Wednesday, it appeared Kovalchuk would miss a seventh game.

One day after Ilya Kovalchuk was ruled out of the Atlanta Thrashers' game against the New York Rangers, the star forward was back in the lineup after a lengthy absence. Kovalchuk broke a bone in his foot on Oct. 24 after being struck by the puck and was expected to be sidelined 3-to-5 weeks. The Atlanta captain missed six games and Atlanta went 3-3 without him.
