Escaping a hole the likes of which the Ducks created early this season is no overnight trick.

Just 3-6-1 after becoming the first and still-only team to lose this season to the woebegone Maple Leafs late last month, the Ducks have since strung together four mostly solid efforts. The stretch has produced five points, in the form of two victories and a shootout defeat, most recently Thursday night's 4-0 triumph over the injury-riddled Predators at Honda Center.

It is simply a fact of life in the NHL that teams don't recover from such funks in one fell swoop. Battling to dig themselves out of trouble, if it can be done at all, figures to take time, and the Ducks know it.

In a Nov. 3 story about a game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Anaheim Ducks, The Associated Press, based on information in the NHL record book, erroneously reported that the Penguins tied a league record with their seventh straight road victory to open the season. Left wing Kyle Calder has signed a one-year contract with the Anaheim Ducks, who released him late in training camp. Calder was assigned to the Ducks' minor-league affiliate in Bakersfield. The nine-year NHL veteran attended Anaheim's training camp on a tryout basis, but was released after going scoreless in four exhibition games.
