Kessel, Hagman lift Maple Leafs in shootout

Preview | Box Score | Recap

TORONTO (AP)—The Toronto Maple Leafs figured they had nothing to lose.

Locked in a winless slide and facing another potential loss in the shootout, the Maple Leafs decided to turn around their helmets in an effort to turn their luck.

Phil Kessel(notes) and Niklas Hagman(notes) each responded with shootout goals, and Vesa Toskala(notes) turned aside a pair of Washington shooters, giving Toronto a 2-1 victory over the Capitals on Saturday night.

It was the first time in seven attempts this season the Leafs had won a game that went to extra time. Nothing about this season seems to have gone to plan and the players had no concern about looking silly in their rally helmets.

“It doesn’t matter how we look if we win,” Hagman said. “You’ve got to change something up.”

Added coach Ron Wilson: “It’s nice that they’re trying to change their luck.”

The Maple Leafs are off to their worst start since 1990—the last time the franchise had just four wins through 21 games—but this team doesn’t appear to be as bad as its 4-11-6 record. It has been competitive the majority of nights this season and is just 2-9 in one-goal games.

A string of bad luck changed against the Capitals before the game even reached a shootout.

Hagman scored Toronto’s lone regulation goal without even using his stick. The Finn was skating hard to the goal when Jason Blake’s(notes) shot deflected off a Caps defender, hit Hagman in the hip and got behind Semyon Varlamov(notes) at 16:49 of the second period.

It was the kind of break the team desperately needed.

“We got a luck break on our goal, but I think we deserved it,” Wilson said.

The good fortune continued late in the third period as Washington’s Eric Fehr(notes) and Brian Pothier(notes) each had shots hit the post in the final three minutes. Fehr also had his stick break while coming in on Toskala with the Capitals first attempt in the shootout.

The victory was especially big coming on the heels of Thursday’s loss in Carolina, where Toronto blew a 3-0 lead, allowed the tying goal in the final seconds and was beaten in a shootout.

“It shows we got character,” defenseman Ian White(notes) said. “We’re not just going to fold over and skate away.”

The Leafs were certainly fortunate to be facing a Capitals team that was not only playing for the second straight night, but was also missing seven players due to injury.

Alex Ovechkin(notes) scored in regulation for Washington (13-5-5), but was a shadow of his dynamic self. Overall, the Caps appeared sluggish and were only able to keep it close because of Varlamov’s 38 saves.

“I think they had more gas,” said Ovechkin, referring to the Maple Leafs.

One person surprised to see Toronto occupying the NHL’s basement is Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau. He often watches the team play on television and thinks the Maple Leafs are better than their record shows.

“I have no idea why they’re in the position they’re in, but I know they’re a dangerous club,” Boudreau said. “They can throw guys over the boards, they can play the game.

“They’re going to turn it around very shortly. Whether they’re too far (out of the playoffs) or not, I don’t know. But they’re going to be a hard team to play against in the not-too-distant future.”

Even still, this was a matchup of teams at the top and bottom of the Eastern Conference.

No stat better highlights the gap between them than one that came to light after Ovechkin opened the scoring at 17:11 of the first period. The goal gave the Caps the lead—something they’ve had at some point in all 23 games this season—and marked the 18th time in 21 games the Leafs have surrendered the first goal.

Ovechkin’s 16th of the season was classic No. 8. He took a nifty pass from streaking defenceman Mike Green(notes) and beat Toskala with the kind of quick, hard shot that only a handful of players in the world are capable of unleashing.

NOTES: Ovechkin has 16 goals in 17 career games against Toronto. … Garnet Exelby(notes) and Rickard Wallin(notes) were scratched for the Maple Leafs. … The Washington sick bay includes: Milan Jurcina(notes) (lower body), Mike Knuble(notes) (broken finger), Boyd Gordon(notes) (back), Alexander Semin(notes) (wrist), Quintin Lang (broken jaw), Shaone Morrisonn(notes) (upped body) and Tom Poti(notes) (upper body).

@54 and @55 Cathyp is an insane freak out on an extended pass from the 'unfunny' farm. I try my very best to ignore it, but sometimes I can't @55.
NOTE to everyone who comes on Leafs game threads - ignore this psychotic beeach and maybe she will go away and spew her vicious little venom on the team she apparently likes - the Montreal Canadiens. The creature posts more turd here on Leafs game threads than she does on her Habs. Obviously a nattering nabob of negativity. IGNORE CATHY P.! Hopefully that will make it go away!

    Don

Nobody finds this crap funny as I'm sure you know. We don't know where she came from or why she acts like an idiot on the Leaf boards. She knows nothing about the game of hockey or the NHL. She doesn't know how to spell "Leafs" obviously, and from my viewpoint, is just an all around moron. I think the best option is to just ignore her, but to get everyone to do so is easier said then done.

I just had another poem come to me. I think I'll title it "An Ode to a Bull Dyke", look for it on the next Leafs' blog. This one's as old as "GO HAROLD, BURKE, BLAH, BLAH, FREAKING BLAH............"

@Cathy P(usslicker).....Ummm, what happened to my poems? I suppose one of two things must have happened. First guess is that you were so deeply embarrassed that you couldn't think of a reply that you had them taken down to hide your shame? Or.....you were so awestruck that somebody actually acknowledged your pathetic existence that you pulled them down and rushed them to a publisher for copyright cash? No big deal, either way, I think I spent about 3 minutes of my life on them; small price for your humiliation was sooooo worth it!

Guy F. Yes, I have begin to get over that hell in Raleigh. Wow! They do test a guy and his loyalty.
Sharp a lock to make Team Canada? I'm thinking he doesn't make it. What's the story on Keith? A lock?
Not getting the game at atdhe.net for some reason. Comes on for a second or ten then fades and seems to ask me for cash. Language barrier so I can't understand what it is asking me. Will try again. And ask my wife to translate. 0-0 after two. Canucks score two or three against the tired Hawks in the third and win by two goals.
More on the post-game Canuck-Hawk thread.
Go Canucks Go! That newly minted sniper H. Sedin will bag the winner! Or will it be shoot shoot shoot pull that trigger Samuelsson? I will stick with Henrik.

@ 88/HH/LN : Hey, I was going to say Giants for the Mem Cup...but that would be a stretch, too many changes this year. They'll win the BC division and get tossed in the second round methinks. I'm sticking with my longshot prediction.

Hope you can catch tonights game, it's going to be a good one.

As for the Olympic team Doughty out, Lucic out, Smyth out. Getzlaf started slow but he'll be there, Lecavalier may not. Heatley and Thornton will be there too. I'd go with Stamkos ahead of Vinnie. Steven has more highlight reel goals this year than OV!. Interestingly, I think tonight's game will feature at least 10 Olympians : Hjalmarsson, Samuelsson, Sedin, Sedin, Edler for Sweden, Kesler and Kane for America, Salo for Finland and Toews, Keith and Sharp for Canada (Seabrook has a good shot too)

I responded in the Detroit thread a few days ago (after people gave you all that grief...maybe I'll get ripped for my long, somewhat off-topic post here, then again, I am talking hockey right...)

    Cheers man!

p.s. that Carolina game was a heartbreaker.

@47 da fat man Inspiring my friend, deeply inspiring. An Ode to a Lot Lizard might be a nice title. Or perhaps The Angst of a Wanna Be Tranny. Lame titles but that is the best I got right now.

Cathy. Trust me when I write you do not want to know what 88 means. You'll find out soon enough in one form or another I sincerely hope.

88 Cathy P.S. You stay classy now.

@46 Guy F. You're such a Western WHL lover! lol lol The Wheat Kings to win the Cup? Come on man. Spits odds on faves to win it all, but strange things do and always will happen in the Memorial Cup. Wish they would come up with some kind of different format for that awesome tourney. Just does not seem fair the way it is run these days.

HUGE game for your Canucks tonight. I am going to do my very very best to get the game online over here, way over here, at www.atdhe.net Just hope it is fed well outside of N. America. GO CANUCKS GO!
Oh, what is the word? Is D. Sedin in?
Your previous comments received about headshots by the by. Good calls about the two Russian defencemen in the NHL that I forgot about. I have this feeling as noted that we are in for some very very big surprises from Russia in 'Couver in February. I think we may see a whole load of defensive talent that we may not ever have heard of coming out of the KHL. Unless of course you follow the KHL somewhat closely. I would not be surprised if you did.

I wonder if the tide is slowing turning more towards Luongo over Brodeur? I do not see us going with Fleury but perhaps. I think it will come down to goalkeeping as it usually does in a short tourney like this. We'll see who gets hot and who does not at the right time. Just over a month now until Yzerman & Co. have to name our lineup. Must be so hard for them to make the call. The Heater has to make it. I don't think Doughty has played his way onto that team. Obviously Lucic will be bypassed unless he starts to tear it up over the next month and change. Don't see that happening. Thornton has got to be on the team. My fave darkhorse Beauchemin out of the running now unfortunately. Lots more names and discussions to go as the selection debates rage over the next few weeks.

    Later skaters.

@ BB : Sometimes we get OHL games here on Sportsnet. Not today though...it's f-ing darts!

Taylor Hall will be number one. Just like Tavares, because his name has been around as "number one pick 2010" people start throwing other names out there. Windsor is freaking stacked. Cam Fowler will go in the first round as well in 2010 plus they have a first rounder (Ellis) and a second rounder (Panik) from 2009!

(Very) Bold Prediction ; Brandon Wheat Kings win the 2010 Memorial Cup. The Saskatoon Blades will win the WHL BUT the host Wheat Kings will use home-ice advantage too upset the heavily favoured Spits. Stafford Smythe to Brayden Schenn or Taylor Hall.

Not sure if you can get this where you are at but I;m watching the Spitfires lay a beat down on Guelph right now. Its 4-0 with 2 left in the first. Hall already has 3 points bringing him up to 49. I can;t believe the have Sequin ranked over him.Maybe it's because he's played fewer games and is on a weaker squad.

The rally cap started in 1942 by Detroit Tiger fans and has been adopted by most North American fans and teams.
