Heatley’s hat trick leads Sharks past Flyers

Preview | Box Score | Recap

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP)—Dany Heatley(notes) thought he could have scored a few more goals, but he wasn’t about to complain. He was having too much fun.

Heatley scored three times, Joe Thornton(notes) recorded his 600th NHL assist, and the San Jose Sharks beat the Philadelphia Flyers 6-3 on Friday night.

“When you have a chance to play with guys on a line like that it’s just fun,” Heatley said. “Those guys open up a lot of room.”

Manny Malhotra(notes), Ryane Clowe(notes) and Patrick Marleau(notes) also scored for the Sharks, who are 7-0-2 at home.

“You drop your mouth every time you see Joe do something like that,” Malhotra said. “He’s a special player, a special passer. On that first one, I think there were 17,000 people who wanted him to shoot. There aren’t many players who have the patience to make that play.”

Claude Giroux(notes) scored twice and Danny Briere(notes) added a goal for the Flyers, who lost for the second time in nine games.

Thornton, who had points on each of Heatley’s goals, earned four assists. He matched his franchise record and has 30 points this season.

“Throw in Marleau, and that was the first time all three guys played together the whole game,” Thornton said. “Those guys must have 30 goals between them. When you’re passing to those guys, it’s a passer’s dream.”

Heatley notched his second hat trick of the season, and the ninth of his career.

“Just moving the puck, skating and creating chances,” he said. “It was a fun game to play.”

Giroux had his first career multigoal game.

The matchup of two of the NHL’s top offensive clubs didn’t disappoint as the action remained furious throughout.

“They beat you every which way you can imagine,” Flyers coach John Stevens said. “That top line kind of took the game away.”

Heatley leads the NHL with 17 goals, and Thornton has a league-best 24 assists. The Flyers and Sharks combined for 14 goals in two meetings this season.

Evgeni Nabokov(notes) stopped 27 shots and improved to 6-0-2 against the Flyers.

Heatley helped create his first goal after picking up a loose puck along the boards as Chris Pronger(notes) fell going after it, and dishing it to Thornton before skating to the net. Thornton split two defenders and put the puck on Heatley’s stick in front of an open net 50 seconds into the middle period.

Pronger had his skates fixed between the first and second periods.

“The ice conditions were bad but I thought I got the problem fixed,” the defenseman said. “That’s a goal they shouldn’t have. The puck was on our stick and down I go.”

Heatley’s short-handed goal 8:41 into the third period was a near duplicate. He completed his hat trick and gave the Sharks a 5-3 lead with a power-play goal with 7:16 left in the game.

“He’s the goal scorer,” Thornton said. “I thought about shooting, but then I saw Dany. He gave me the puck the first two times and I found him in the exact same spot.”

Ray Emery(notes) (11-5-1) made 23 saves for Philadelphia.

NOTES: D Jason Demers(notes) leads NHL rookies with 12 assists. … Flyers D Matt Carle(notes) has recorded assists in two consecutive games following a six-game scoreless streak. … All four of Malhotra’s goals have been scored against Philadelphia or Pittsburgh. … Briere scored his third goal in five games since returning from an injury. … Emery made his first career start against the Sharks. … The Sharks have scored an NHL-leading 40 goals in the second period. … The Flyers are winless in San Jose since Nov. 15, 1999. … Heatley has 28 points—18 goals—in 28 games against the Flyers.

During the Nashville game last week in the tank, Dany Heatley learned that he no longer is playing the Ottawa “scruff along the boards” game with Alfredsson and Spezza. He now realizes that he is hear playing with Joe Thornton the magician with a stick and a puck. In the middle of that game Heatley passed the puck to Thornton then he wasn’t sure weather to skate to the net or help out Joe. Joe waited, and waited till he got to the net, passed the puck over the defensemen’s stick right onto Heatley’s. The goalie stopped the shot (luckily). At that moment in time Dany Heatley now knew what he must do while playing with Joe Thornton; that is go to the net and get open. Dany Heatley has not made a great impression here in San Jose (yet). However, he will now! Heatley has 16 goals now, but he is going to score far more now that he has realized that Jumbo Joe is the real deal.

Drew Rumenda and women like him who say Joe should shoot more !!!
What idiots. The best passer in the league and you want him to shoot.
I can't stand listening to Drew "always Mr. Right"
Monday morning quarterbacking is always irritating, but Drew does it
    every minute
    during and
    after
every play. "he shoulda done this, he shoulda done that, etc. etc. etc ."
Will someone please tell him to put a sock in it.

Alleged hockeyfan00: Did I ever say Blake was a Shark when he got his Cup? I am pretty sure I was illustrating a point to Dutch in regards to his comments about Blake; that Blake won a Cup and your boys haven’t done it since 74-75. Seems fairly straightforward but maybe you Philly fans don’t think so well, like Lindross after Scott Stevens ran his @ss over.

As for Chak's comments: Are you really claiming that it was tougher to win the cup in the 70's when there were only 16 teams???? If anything I would argue that there was a lesser quality game being played (although I never saw it, as that's before my time). I can't find statistics, but in the 81-82 year, the league was 82% Canadian. And I am assuming that it was an even higher percentage of Canucks prior to that. Whereas these days, Canadians represent around 50% and non-North Americans represent around a third of the players.

Let me spell it out for you guys that need it. There is a much larger talent pool to draw from. Europeans represent a large part of the game thus making the quality better. More teams, free agency, and salary caps make it tougher to consistently be good. I would also argue that players are more physically gifted and better trained currently than in the 70's. We have much better training, medical staffs, and knowledge of vitamins, supplements and diets that give today's athletes a significant edge over the players of previous generations. Players are bigger these days, faster and stronger.

There's always the obvious argument 1 out of 16 teams won the cup during the Flyers "reign." Whereas today 1 out of 30. Odds seem a little steeper today. BTW: you do get a banner for Presidents trophies, division titles, and conference titles (not that we're proud of those).

Also, that’s the great thing about our sport. Any team can win in a 7 game series. There are always upsets and the Sharks have been on both ends. In basketball and baseball the better team almost always wins the series. In football, the better team nearly wins every time. The Cup is the hardest of all trophies to win.

We will get our Cups. Good luck to the Flyers in Phoenix.

    @Purevil-

"I love having Heater on our team. We've never had a "pure" goal scorer like him. I would have loved to have got Blake a few years earlier when he was tearing us up. BTW Blake has his Cup, you have to dust off the papers from 74-75 to relive those memories. "

So tell me, was Blake a Shark when he won that cup? Philly has guys on the team who won cups elsewhere too. I'm not sure what you're point is?

Philly played one bad game. I'm not jumping ship any time soon.

You have one good line and tonight it was enough. That won't be the case over a 7 game series, maybe that's why you never make it to the finals?

Ross does the Sharks Pre/Post game crap with some kook who appears to make Jamie Baker uncomfortable with lame jokes and commentary and Christy Yamaguchi's husband. Although it was some new guy last night doing the post with Baker and hopefully they got rid of that other wanker. Now to get rid of that Bro-brah-brody Brazil character.

@ LongkneckJohnson : "The race between Van Riemsdyk and Demers for rookie of the year should be a good one."

There are both great first year players and should have solid careers. Exciting for Sharks and Flyers fans. JVR surprised me. I did see tremendous raw talent at the World Juniors (much like Peter Mueller a couple of years earlier) but I thought he needed one year in Glen Falls. I was wrong, he looks great. Demers kinda flew under the radar (7th rounders tend to do so) but looks to be the real deal. Playing on a team with Blake and Boyle doesn't hurt either.

That said, Tavares, Myers and the two d-men in Manhattan will be tough to beat for the Calder....

Marleau-Thornton-Heatley... not a real shocker they played the whole game together considering Stevie Y was there to scout for team Canadia...about time McLellan pulled that one out.

Hey Pure Evil: The Sharks have been around for nearly 20 years and have never won a Cup, the Flyers won back to back Cups in less than ten years of their conception playing against a better quality of hockey than exists today, and have been to the SC Finals a few times since then Sure it's been a long long time since they won one, but hey you know what? 2 is still better than none, and getting to the Finals is better than never getting there.. But hey you guys kick ass in the regular season, do they give out a banner for that?

Hey Dutch-oven, you can talk all you want about the Sharks getting picked and not winning the Cup every year, but that's for October. You can't project injuries, off years, emergence of young players, goal tending streaks, etc. But at least we have a good team every year and there is no rebuilding, it's all about re-loading. We will get our Cups, and when we do that will give our franchise an even greater emphasis on a winning culture.

When have the Flyers last won the Cup???? 74-75? Sharks weren’t even a franchise yet. Last time they reached the finals???? 96-97 when they got destroyed by Detroit? Oh yeah, I remember that series. Your boys found the back of the net a grand total of 6 times vs Vernon in 4 games.

I love having Heater on our team. We've never had a "pure" goal scorer like him. I would have loved to have got Blake a few years earlier when he was tearing us up. BTW Blake has his Cup, you have to dust off the papers from 74-75 to relive those memories.

@28 G-Man, check the papers there may be some flying pig reports out there! @22nnamdi, hey I don't blame you for being optimistic, the Sharks were a very strong team last season and definitely got an upgrade trading Mihalek (good) and Choo-Choo (4th line talent or at least performance) for scatter-brain Dany Heatly. It's a long season however and somehow the Sharks have always lacked bite come playoff time, they need a head strong leader and a guy like Heatly in the mix, who knows could well be toxic. Personally I hate "Captain" Rob Flake more than Heatly but that guy is a tool and future locker room cancer. You'll see. I've been telling flyer fans the same about Emery. Guess we'll have to see. Nice start Sharkies a very tough team for Eastern Conference teams to play. Have been for a long time.

I as a sharks fan, I think the sharks played a terrible game. Flyers had them hemmed in their own end most of the night. Give away after give away, how many times did the sharks turn the puck over?
The score may not show it but the shark were out played.
The race between Van Riemsdyk and Demers for rookie of the year should be a good one.

    GO SHARKS!!!

My wife is screaming in my ear for Joe to shoot the puck! Patience woman! Of course, i was saying to myself, shoot the fing puck! What passes and all Dany has to do is have his stick on the ice! How about my man Murray, saw him close up and he is one big fella, as Powe found out. You don't want to bump and grind it with Murray!
