Blackhawks rout Flames in playoff rematch

Preview | Box Score | Recap

CALGARY, Alberta (AP)—The Chicago Blackhawks overpowered the Calgary Flames in a rematch of their first-round playoff series.

Kris Versteeg(notes) scored two power-play goals in Chicago’s five-goal second period to help the Blackhawks rout the Flames 7-1 on Thursday night.

“Great game across the board, I’m very happy with all aspects and areas of our game,” Chicago coach Joel Quenneville said. “Everyone contributed.”

The Blackhawks beat the Flames in six games last season in the playoffs, ending the series with a 4-1 victory in Calgary. On Oct. 12 in Chicago in their first meeting of the season, the Blackhawks overcame a 5-0 deficit to beat the Flames 6-5 in overtime.

Troy Brouwer(notes) and Patrick Kane(notes) added power-play goals for the Blackhawks, 4 for 5 with the man advantage. Dustin Byfuglien(notes), Andrew Ladd(notes) and Ben Eager(notes) also scored to help Chicago open a six-game trip with its fifth straight victory.

“The (power play has) been struggling a little bit this year, but it’s nice to get it back on track tonight,” Kane said. “Obviously, we have a lot of skill on both units, so it’s good to get that going and hopefully we can keep it going.”

Cristobal Huet(notes) made 27 saves, allowing only Olli Jokinen’s(notes) power-play goal.

Chicago converted all three of its power-play chances in the second period, each the result of an undisciplined penalty.

On the go-ahead goal, Nigel Dawes(notes) was in the penalty box for roughing after he jumped Blackhawks defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson(notes) in response to the Swede’s heavy open-ice hit on Rene Bourque(notes). Chicago’s decisive two-man advantage came as a result of a too-many-men-on-the-ice penalty followed by a roughing penalty on Dion Phaneuf(notes).

“We had a lapse in the second and they capitalized on that,” Phaneuf said. “That’s not acceptable. As a group, we have to be better. We have to play a full 60-minute game.”

The Pengrowth Saddledome crowd voiced its displeasure with the home team, soundly booing the Flames off the ice at the end of the second period.

“There wasn’t a guy in here, every single one of us, that was nearly good enough especially in an important time of the game in the second period where we just had a meltdown,” Flames captain Jarome Iginla(notes) said. “We’ve been doing that against this team for a while and we haven’t been good enough lately. That was embarrassing.”

NOTES: Quenneville has 496 victories to tie Glen Sather for 14th on the career list. … Kane celebrated his 21st birthday. … Duncan Keith(notes) had three assists. … Calgary was 1 for 5 on the power play.

I am a Blackhawks fan. Judging by some comments made I am more of a fan than alot of you. I went through all those years paying Bill Wirtz to watch a team flounder. Hawks "fans" should have pride in our citys team but should be gracious in winning. it wasnt that long ago that we were the butt of most the NHL's jokes. With that said, it was a great game against a formidible opponent. Play the series 100 times and i dont think you would see a score like that again. I was at the Hawks game when we lost to the sabres like 9 to 1. I remember. Don't jinx the hawks, at least have the class that Bob Probert would show a victim.

Ronny the reason why Buff is expendable is because although they aren't proven yet we have guys like Bickell and Beach, Aliu (both in the minors) that are big and play the same way. I like Big Buff but he is one of the guys you might be able to get something for also.

Hi guys,,..boy what a game!,...being realistic, i thought the flames wouldda been really up for this one, and expected much more than the blowout, and loss of composure by the flames. Wouldnt have shocked me at all if the flames wouldda won, considering yu'd think they'd a wanted some sort of revenge for the past cpl losses to th hawks. OOOh well! Our boys just seem to be on a really good thing right now, and its fun to watch. Got an opinion on the cap thing, anyone? My take is now this: hjarmarrson might just be the reason we can let Campbell go to help save Kane, Toews, n Keith. And im sick n tired of people thinkin we should let Buff go,..stevie wonder can see his contributions in the slot and crease, plus he can score as well as protect the stars. one quick question too if anyone might know: Is that Nystrom kid on calgary the son of Bob Nystrom?..Islanders great? I like him, wish we had him.

@ Geoff. It would be nice if the Wings didn't even MAKE the playoffs, unfortunately that is highly unlikely to happen.

every team is "beatable". But how could anyone argue who is the better team. Stats, playoffs, it all adds up in the hawks favor. If only we had an answer like that for the Canucks, Coach Q and the great Scotty Bowman can come up with a way to dominate our other friends from the north, i would be one happy fan.We will win the division, and see a first round exit of the wings via the hawks.

@ ChiTownHustle. Yes, I do realize there is more to it than all that, and records don't always speak for themselves. Perfect example being the Avs, who definitely have a more endearing record than they should. But keep in mind for the goals against thing, the Flames had only allowed 4 more going into last night's game, which is by no means a big difference. What I just don't get is, if the Hawks are so great as to be ringing up scores like last night (which looked more on par for a Leafs game, really), and also coming back in the first game to win 6-5, then why can't/don't they perform like that every game? I don't really understand why the Flames seem to be the only team in the league who cannot handle the Hawks style of play, because the Hawks ARE beatable. I will say though, what Sutter said following last night's game, about this team being too complacent after such losses and not getting "mad", shows a whole about the team's character. Chicago is definitely a team that doesn't quit and they certainly don't let a few bad goals (or plays for that matter) completely deflate them, which I suppose could be a big reason why they are able to trounce the Flames every time, since the Flames always seem to do the opposite.

What you see is what you get with the Sutters. It happened here in Chicago, in New Jersey and now in Calgary. It will not be a pretty ending in Calgary for the Sutters.

    @ Icedragon

    You said:
"Considering that entering last night's game, the two teams had identical records AND the Flames had more goals scored than the Hawks. So yeah, they aren't so great of a team that there's any reason why they should have won 7-1".

I understand your message and that you were not sayign the Hawks were bad. However, you can't use just W/L records and goals scored to determine who is good, better, etc. There is way more to the makeup of a good team than that. I mean by your logic then its a moot point because prior to last night you may of had more goals but also allowed more. So where does that fit in to your reasoning? You're right in that the Hawks aren't so great of a team to off won by that score because to say that would mean the Hawks need to do that day in day out...so you're correct. BUT... if you would of also looked at goals against, struggles in your own building, combined with the Hawks outscoring the Flames (and I cant recall the exact number form the graphic on the screen but was around 34-13 in last 10)...it was plausible.

20th ranked PP, yeah that number is going to be alot higher. This team isn't even at full strenght. Toews makes them a much better team(missed 6 games already), and Hossa (wednesday) going to make them even better. I think he'll increase their PP slightly, don't you? Go Hawks!

@dinos_hawks74, I'm quite sure it did too. @ DRM, if your team was losing 6-1, you'd probably be booing too. And @ Slazz, I never said they aren't good. I was simply saying they aren't *so* good that they should have been winning by a score of 6-1 (at the time). Considering that entering last night's game, the two teams had identical records AND the Flames had more goals scored than the Hawks. So yeah, they aren't so great of a team that there's any reason why they should have won 7-1. I won't deny that they are a good team because they are, and when they get Hossa they are going to just be downright scary. I know I've said it before, and I'll say it again, the Hawks better make damn sure not to let the Wings win the division.

Hey Dragon yeah the Hawks PP has been dismal but it's also been heating up lately and I highly doubt they will be 20th by the end of the year. Some great passing on those power plays, that second Versteeg goal was a thing of beauty. Calgary did win one stat though, they beat the @#$% out of Frazier and Seabrook although I thought number seven held his own against that big ole bully. :)

Nice to see how when all the flames fams talk about how critical the oilers fans are and they should support the team no matter what that they boo their team off afetr the second period. Calgary fans really know how to support their team. What a joke.

Ian G: Flames 3-1? Apparently you had forgotten how the Hawks came back to win the last game against your FLAMERS!!! 3-1? Yeah right!! More like 7-1 in favor of the Hawks!! Hahahaha!!!

Icedragon: I'm pretty sure that our power play ranking moved up a spot or 2 thanks to the loser Flames who didn't bother to show up last night to play!!

Icedragon.....I guess you forgot that after saying: "..how could lovely Flames give up 4pp goals to 20th ranked PP", you also said: " how could lovely Flames give up 4pp goals to 20th ranked TEAM, period"
Anyhow..I do apologize for distracting you from smoking that strong Canadian weed.

P.S. those lovely Calgary boys do skate pretty but luck toughness of Blackhawks (who are on average 1 foot shorter and 20 pounds lighter). Maybe they should audition for Disney on Ice next year. I will come to watch...promise.

What a pleasant surprise that Hjalmarsson is on D. The best kept little secret in the NHL this year IMHO. Rene(how many fingers do I have up? Tuesday!) Bourque would probably agree.
