Fisher scores twice, Senators beat Maple Leafs 3-2

Preview | Box Score | Recap

OTTAWA (AP)—Although the Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs are both struggling, their rivalry is still strong.

Mike Fisher(notes) scored twice, including the tiebreaking goal in the second period, to lead the Senators to a 3-2 win over the Maple Leafs on Tuesday night.

“A lot of hard hits and fights. It was a physical game, back and forth and some good battles out there,” said Fisher, who beat Toronto goalie Vesa Toskala(notes) with a high shot with 5:50 left in the second period.

The Senators have dominated the season series in recent years, improving to 20-9-3 against the Maple Leafs since 2005-06—including an 11-3-2 mark at home. Six of the last eight meetings have been decided by one goal.

“Obviously, it was still the Battle of Ontario,” Toronto center Matt Stajan(notes) said.

There were three fights in the opening 20 minutes. Ottawa’s Jesse Winchester(notes) and Toronto’s Jeff Finger(notes) got things started early, dropping the gloves less than 3 minutes in. Senators defenseman Matt Carkner(notes) and Leafs winger Colton Orr(notes) squared off midway through the period, with Orr catching Carkner with a punch that dropped the big blue-liner. About a minute later, Ottawa’s Chris Neil(notes) went at it with Toronto’s Luke Schenn(notes).

“It was a fairly exciting hockey game,” Toronto defenseman Ian White(notes) said. “A couple of fights, a close game a a lot of aggression and guys battling. It was good.”

Milan Michalek(notes) also scored for the Senators (9-6-3), who earned their first win in three games. Alex Kovalev(notes), Alexandre Picard and Chris Campoli(notes) added two assists each.

Pascal Leclaire(notes) stopped 30 shots, including 15 in the third period when the Maple Leafs pressed for the tying goal.

“It’s tough. We’re definitely working hard and getting chances, but, at the end of the day, we’ve got to find a way to score one more than the other team,” Stajan said.

Phil Kessel(notes) and Niklas Hagman(notes) scored for the Leafs (3-11-5), who lost their fourth straight. Kessel extended his point-scoring streak to six games, during which he has five goals and three assists.

Rookie defenseman Carl Gunnarsson(notes) picked up an assist on Kessel’s goal for his first NHL point. Toskala, still looking for his first win of the season, made 18 saves and fell to 0-4-2.

Fisher pounced on a loose puck in the slot and slipped a shot past Toskala to make it 1-0 at 8:08 of the first. It was the 17th time in 19 games that the Leafs have given up the opening goal.

However, the Leafs tied it 62 seconds later when Kessel crossed the Senators’ blueline and wristed a shot past Leclaire.

Hagman put the Leafs into the lead when he beat a screened Leclaire less than 5 minutes into the second, but the Senators responded when Michalek scored on a deflection with at 11:03 with Hagman in the penalty box for hooking.

Fisher got the tiebreaking goal a little more than three minutes later. Toronto pressed in the third, but Leclaire and the Senators held on.

“We liked our first 50 minutes of the game,” Ottawa coach Cory Clouston said. “We played our last 10 not to lose. You can’t have success like that, but we got the two points. We needed (Leclaire) and he was at his best.”

Leclaire was at his best in the third when made a great save to reach his stick back and steer the puck out of the crease after a fluke bounce almost got past him. He survived another close call when Leafs forward Lee Stempniak(notes) struck the post with a shot from in close.

NOTES: Carkner leads the NHL in fighting majors with nine. Orr has seven. … The game drew a crowd of 17,406 to Scotiabank Place, almost 2,000 fewer than capacity.

@Cathy P(usslicker)....I've never cried in my life, Butch, and a retarded bull dyke like you has no chance of making it happen. There are few lines I don't cross, attacking kids is one of them. Hence, my revulsion at your hypocrisy; claiming to "agree" that name calling is bad.LOL! it's ALL you have, and you're not even good at it. You're the lowest of the low, in EVERY way, so please spare us this futile attempt at claiming to be above the fray; you're BELOW it. Crawl back to your lonely pathetic barn, lowlife.

@Cathy p(usslicker).....You AGREE with Peyton that name calling is immature/childish??? I think you've called my 3 year old son a pig around 5-6 times now, right? Please! You don't have the hockey chops to discuss the sport, that's why you NEVER try. Instead, you attempt to be a hardass; with embarrassing results. Your fellow Hasbeens fans don't even acknowledge your existence, does that tell you something? You've now ventured over to the pink wings sites and started kissing their ass; how's that worked for you? They don't exactly seem to be big fans of yours either, in spite of your ridiculous claims of "speaking to Ted Lindsay many times"? Suuuuuuure, and it's "normal" for you to be sleeping with your daddy? I'd say you were a joke, but the word "joke" indicates humor; which you lack. Toughen up, Butch, and just admit that you don't have what it takes to hang with the fellas; unless you're making a beer run.

My problem with the leafs is this:
If we are gonna lose, lets lose with the kids and give them a chance to show they belong.
If we are going to rebuild, then lets re-build and trading away first and second round draft picks is not re-building in my books. Kessel is good yes and has alot of potential
by so did Brian Berard. Remember him?
    Anything could happen.
Schenn needs to be in a situation that he can succeed
damn the trying to win, play him with the only for sure jewel in the line-up, Kaberle. Thats coaching.
Juggling lines and the inconsistancy of D pairings
further make this bunch more insecure. Thats coaching.
I could go on and on but you get the picture.
This team should be rebuilt in the Detroit mode with speed
and talent/depth, good drafting etc. not the Anaheim model.
Prongers dont grow on trees and having a brother to lure
a hall of famer is just lucky. It was a fluke, the stars aligned for Burke, dumb luck.
Never will intimidation win another cup,
those days are over unless you can find fast talented tough guys. Good luck with that.

Yes i agree with the Bowl man and Peyton. Laff Abomination you write more fiction than H.G. Wells! All those losers on the Marlies you mentioned, check their stats nitwit, check the teams overall stats, you delusional fool! And go check Kadri's stats with the knights(can hardly cut it in the OHL) then tell me about this great pick! Maybe you ought to look at T.Hall, Fowler or another great one you could have had in Seguin. But thanks to Burke this team will remain the disgrace of Ontario and the laffing stock of Canada! GO HAROLD BALLARD,BURKE,FERGUSON JR.(The losing tradition continues!)

    @ Leaf Nation
Whining that “she/he started it” doesn't cut it. I don't really care what your history is with anyone on here. When you argue on a public forum, it does concern others. If you want to argue somewhere else, fine. But on here, others have to read and see this garbage, so don't pull the “it's none of your business” nonsense.

I was simply urging you to maybe stick to the facts, instead of random name calling, insults and deflections. No where in my post did I claim that there is no back and forth between fans. I am very much aware of that, I was simply saying if we all just grow up a little and try to have a rational discussion, you wouldn't have to worry about it (or at least it would be civilized). For instance, I was never under the impression that this Leafs team would make the playoffs this year. I would argue they simply did not have enough depth up front at the start of the season. I think the TO media hypes fans up every year, even with the most mediocre of teams, which is unfair and disingenuous.

I agree with Joe D that you do seem to see everything Leaf-related through rose coloured glasses. I have to say, your unwavering optimism is inspiring, if not unwarranted. What I don't understand is why you take every criticism of the team so personally. I mean you are not on the team, or in any way affiliated with the team. I love the Habs, but I understand when they are playing poorly, and when the team isn't that great. I don't get bent out of shape when people point out these flaws and I don't try to claim they are something they're not. Neither should you. I think if you had a more realistic view of your own team, it would save you a lot of frustration. I'm not playing any games. I'm simply telling you to relax.

You were called a gay person. Honestly?! That is the reason you used to justify a threat toward someone else? You sound like a 13 year old boy. Someone calls you a name so you are going to beat them up. Would you tell your kids to beat the crap out of someone if they were called a name? I would certainly hope not. If you are happily married why would you let it bug you so much? So no, I wouldn't forgive you and maybe you should try to be a little less homophobic.

“What are they doing here except to rub it in our faces after a very tough loss last night.”
These two are obviously trying to get a rise out of you, you know this, and yet it seems to be pretty easy to do so.

    Peace.

@ laff nation... toronto the mecca of hockey ahahaha, you must be kidding yourself, noone even wants to come here, and all the people that do get over paid, even a hometown boy like rick nash rather play in columbus than toronto, mecca of hockey that was a good one,,,, who in their right mind wants to play for a loser,,, and as you praising brian burke....The only thing that burke is capable of is bringing a team down to the bottom of the standings, just look at what he did in anaheim, inherited a team built by Brian muarry and just brought over pronger won a cup, and ever since then all his moves have done are trade andy macdonald for doug wight, put bryzgalov on waivers and reward players like giggy with huge contracts, and now look at them they are in last place,,, what took him 3 years to do in anahiem he has done in half a season with the laffs.... yes this guy is a genius, but at killing teams....the laffs are going nowhere for the next 3 years. LAFF NATION COME BACK DOWN TO EARTH THEY SUCKKKKKK.........

Don't forget about the men down on the farm too such as Stalberg, Bozak and Hanson etc..... And then Kadri next year. There is plenty of reason for optimism. I could yak on more about Toronto and the Canadiens, but I won't except to say Habs lovers are in for much more misery as long as Bob Gainey is their GM. He can't cut it and he has shown he can't cut it. They are a mediocre team at best with some horrendous contracts.
Oh, I really like Finger by the way. And we have defencemen to trade and we will do so. Stay tuned. It's the quarter pole of the season, and you can take it to the bank that there will be plenty of moves happening in Toronto anytime now. We've been a frustrating team to watch this year, that will soon change and we will start winning far more than we are losing. But again this year does not count. It's just a building block for what is to come. Don't forget we are the most successful Canadian playoff franchise since 1993 with four conference final appearances - 1993, 1994, 1999 and 2002. People who like to crap on the Leafs forget that we have 13 Stanley Cups in the bag and could have had many more except for the wretched ownership of Harold Ballard and more recently MLSE. But Burke has complete control of this team now - no interference from Peddie, Tanenbaum of any of the suits. Remember that. That is crucial. He would not have come to Toronto had he not received assurances that there would be no corporate interference or controls. And there has been none. He is the operator and President of Leaf Nation. Wilson is the VP. I have full confidence in our commanders in chief. So should you. Stay loyal. I have been a fan of the Leafs longer than you by the way, and have suffered just like you. Keep the faith. Remember the Red Wings won their first Cup in 42 years back in 1997 and they are still two Cups behind us with only 11. Remember the Hawks have not won since 1961. Remember that barring a miracle in '94 the Rangers would not have won a Cup since WWII. Keep all that in mind and remember that we have the greatest minor hockey system in the world that churns out more quality hockey players and pro talent than any other region in the world. We have nothing to be ashamed about when it comes to hockey.
    GO LEAFS GO!

@ 39 Joe D. Aaahhhhhh good someone who knows a lot about the Leafs. I have been suffering just as long as you have. I will disregard the rubbish on these posts and direct my comments at you. We did sign two quality free agents this past summer - Frank Beauchemin and Mike Komisarek. We are not built to succeed this year, everybody knows that. This team has I believe ten UFA's after this year. Burke will blow up the team and start the reconstruction process. The pieces we have that I think he wants to keep are Gustavsson, Beauchemin, Komisarek, perhaps Kaberle, White, Schenn, Hagman and Orr. I see a mass exodus of our forwards soon enough including Blake, possibly Kulemin and Grabovski, maybe Poni and others such as Mitchell, Primeau and players that are just not getting it done. Give Burke a chance my Leaf loving comrade. We will be fine down the road. I along with many many people in the hockey world and certainly the Toronto media thought we were going to have a decent squad this year after we went 6-3 in the pre-season. Man, were we wrong! Andy Frost on Leaftalk after the game against Ottawa the other night was just flabbergasted as were so many others. Cox, Simmons, Zeisberger, Shoalts, Mirtle etc...... with the Toronto newspapers stunned. It's shocking how badly we have come out of the gate. But not to worry. Things will get better starting with Kessel which will hopefully wind up being a great deal for us, Gustavsson, Beauch, Kommy and we'll take things from there. We have a tremendous amount of cap space after this season is over, BUT the problem is there might not be the free agents we want that are still available. You know very well that many players would love to come to Toronto. We won the Monster sweepstakes over Dallas, Colorado and one other team. We got Beauchemin and Kommy to come here. Toronto is the Mecca of hockey and try not to forget that we are the second most glorious franchise in NHL history. Don't lose faith now. Burke is a quality GM, he has proven that already with the work he has done with Toronto. We're just not seeing the results yet. Wilson is an excellent coach. Why do you think they are running Team USA? Because they are outstanding. Wilson had a great record with the Sharks, but just didn't get the bounces and effort from his troops come playoff time or he would have a Cup ring or three. Burke has one. We'll be fine man. Keep the faith.
GO LEAFS GO! P.S. Rask is nothing special. That was done during the reign of JFJ which was pretty disastrous considering we're still paying Tucker and that dirtbag Raycroft. How Razor is still in league out in Vancouver is beyond my comprehension. Anyway, more on the Leafs later. Just don't lose hope - you know we have played many games this year that we should have won such as both games against Montreal, Vancouver, Dallas, both Ottawa games etc....... Just no luck, four OT losses without a win, it just goes on and on. And Toskala has mostly stank. Who could have foreseen the sheer quantity of disappointing player performances this year? Nobody. Least of all the players themselves. Stajan has done almost nothing. These guys know their NHL careers are essentially on the line yet still they cannot finish around the net. We'll get it going but we are not going to make the playoffs this year. I just hope I win all my wagers with Montreal friends about who will finish first in the regular season - Leafs or the Canadiens.

Hey Leaf Nation, yes I spelled Kurvers wrong at 4 am.
So what, it doesnt change the fact that everybody started
making the same comparisons a few hours later.
It doesnt change that fact that we gave up Rask and took
on Raycroft and put confidence in Pogge.
The list goes on and on and on and on.
This club is a mess, no first draft picks for two years and
a bunch of long in the tooth overpaid contracts impossible to dump except for waivers and eating them.
Burk is dinosaur and the leafs will stink for another decade. In an age of speed and finnese he goes out and get tough guys, damn.
Wilson should be down the road kicking stones if not for the fact that he is coaching in the Olympics.
So you go ahead and look at the big picture with rose coloured glasses, I look at the same picture and see
    two potential players,Kessel and Gustavson.
The rest are a bunch of Fourth liners and maybe a couple of third liners.
Meaning Kessel can do nothing to save this bunch of losers by himself and no self respecting free agent will come near here.
I have been a leaf fan since 1969 and I have every right to vent and rant and rave.
As for yout little tiff with Joe Cash and Cathy, they are laughing at you just as I am.
Wake up and smell the coffee
