Ovechkin tops Gaborik and Rangers in return

Preview | Box Score | Recap

NEW YORK (AP)—Alex Ovechkin(notes) gave the Washington Capitals a jolt simply by returning to the lineup. Matt Bradley(notes) delivered the jump they needed with a bloody fight and a big third-period goal.

Ovechkin scored in his first game back from a two-week absence, and Bradley rebounded from a messy brawl to lift the Capitals to a 4-2 victory over the New York Rangers on Tuesday night.

With Washington down 1-0 and being outplayed by New York in the opening minutes of the game, Bradley took on Aaron Voros(notes) in a lengthy bout in which both players doled out haymakers. When it was done, Bradley skated off with blood covering his face and went to get six stitches over his left eye.

“If you’re ever going to get into a fight at the time, I think that might’ve been one of them,” Bradley said. “It didn’t bother me. I could feel the blood coming, but there is no pain or anything. It’s just one of those things that is more annoying than anything. You have to go in and get stitches and you have to miss five minutes.

“It won’t be my last one.”

The injuries didn’t affect him when he knocked the puck away from Wade Redden(notes) and raced up ice on a break. Matt Gilroy(notes) couldn’t deny him from behind, and Bradley beat Henrik Lundqvist(notes) with a rising shot to the glove side for his fourth of the season.

“Even if he takes a penalty, he can’t allow that shot to be taken. I thought he had an opportunity to stop it,” Rangers coach John Tortorella said of the rookie Gilroy. “He needs to realize that he needs to pull out with Redds stuck on the boards there. It’s a bump, but he’ll learn from it.”

Ovechkin missed six games because of an upper body injury, believed to be a strained left shoulder, but came back with a flourish. He netted his NHL-leading 15th goal, in only 15 games, while New York’s Sean Avery(notes) sat in the penalty box. That erased the Rangers’ 1-0 advantage in the first period.

“It’s always nice when you get hurt and you come back and you score in the first period on your first shot,” Ovechkin said. “You feel pretty good about yourself. After that I feel pretty cool. I was not afraid to take some hits and go battle.”

Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau earned his 100th NHL victory.

Marian Gaborik(notes) scored both goals for the Rangers and moved into a tie with Ovechkin with his 15th, Gaborik gave New York a 1-0 lead just 1:16 in and then made it 2-2 at 8:23 of the third with a power-play goal against Washington backup goalie Semyon Varlamov(notes).

Gaborik has carried the Rangers’ offense this season. After a 2-1 shootout victory at Ottawa on Saturday, New York was trying to win back-to-back games for the first time since mid-October.

“Of course it’s frustrating,” Gaborik said. “We had a good start, but we took a couple of bad penalties and they scored, We have to try to be disciplined.”

The Rangers led 5-4 in shots, but didn’t record one for the final 15 minutes, 28 seconds of the first period and 3:52 of the second.

Brooks Laich(notes) pushed the Capitals in front 2-1 when he got to a rebound of defenseman Mike Green’s(notes) shot in the crease and knocked it past Lundqvist with 4:16 remaining in the second. Green also earned the primary assist on Ovechkin’s goal.

Brian Pothier(notes) scored an empty-netter with 16.7 seconds left.

The Rangers were fortunate to be trailing by only a goal heading into the third as they were outshot 21-11 through 40 minutes. New York finished with 20 shots, tying its season low.

New York netted the equalizer when Gaborik scored from the goal line to Varlamov’s right, snapping in a shot from a difficult angle. The Rangers converted on the second of back-to-back penalties.

Washington went 4-2 while Ovechkin was out, then beat New York despite missing top forward Alexander Semin(notes), who was sidelined by a sore right wrist. Varlamov got the start in place of No. 1 goalie Jose Theodore(notes), who was home because of a personal reason.

Varlamov played well against the Rangers after replacing Theodore in the nets during the first round of last season’s playoffs and was a major reason why the Capitals erased a 3-1 series deficit and advanced.

Bradley made the difference this time.

“It’s amazing,” Boudreau said. “He got cut pretty good, came back and was instrumental in us winning. He’s got oodles of character.”

NOTES: Boudreau is 100-45-19. … The Capitals recalled C Jay Beagle(notes) and G Michal Neuvirth(notes) from Hershey (AHL). Beagle replaced Semin in the lineup, and Neuvirth served as Varlamov’s backup. In his fourth NHL game, Beagle earned his first point with an assist on Bradley’s goal. … The Rangers are 4-8-1 since their seven-game winning streak ended Oct. 17.

Sorry, Rags fans... #1 star doesn't get awarded to a guy on the losing team... Winning the game is the most important thing, ya know...

it's ok, we don't have to worry about the russians. the cold war is over, they are no longer a security threat. now, if muslims start showing up on the ice, or north koreans, then we should call a code red on the ice (or any time ovi visits your favorite team's stadium)

ovi clearly topped gaborik. given the only argument ppl have for crosby being better than ovi are the wins, doesn't that mean ovi did better than gaborik, since ovi's team won? btw, all those fans using injuries to explain their teams' struggles, don't the caps prove that injuries should be an excuse? ovi goes down, they win. green goes down, they win. knuble goes down, they win. semin goes down, they win. the caps have done a good job with hershey, developing players who can just step in when a player on the caps goes down, and help this team keep winning. boudroue is clearly a great coach, and this team has great guys in its system. im looking foward to the next few years making up for my suffering in the early 2000s. C A P S CAPS CAPS CAPS!!!

anyobdy else think its a national security threat to have all these ruskies living in the capitol? notch another loss up to the poor play of wade redden and his lack of skill in all areas. nice give away to lead to the breakaway goal. ovechkin takes second place to gaborik for the second time this year, and who woulda thunk it - hes been healthier (and humbler of course)

@29 Jay-Jay - You don't like Mike Emrick? One of the best play-by-play announcers in the game IMHO. Devil fans are lucky to have him.

Yeah Caps!!! How about Matt Bradley getting his face busted open and then scoring the game winning goal. Congratulations to Boudreau on his 100th win. I think they said he is the 4th fastest to get to 100 wins.

What the hell is Yahoo trying to insinuate with the site header, "He's Baaaaaaaaack"? Hats off to a guy named Beagle up from the Hersey squirts for delivering the GW assist. He doesn't chew skates in the locker room I wonder. Caps are playing well, NYR happy to have Gaborik playing for them, so far so good that's he's not only playing well he's playing!

as bad as laughlin is (and he is pretty annoying, i usually mute the game when i watch it at home), he's not as bad as the guys who do the devils' games. i live in new orleans, so watching my caps on tv is rare. recently i was watching the yahoo stream, which was of the devils' broadcast, and the guy used the dumbest terms to refer to things. i couldn't stand it. same adjectives for everything, and they were laughing at their own (unfunny) jokes

NYR's playing perimeter hockey is not working, NYR's neutral zone attack is non existent and the oppossing teams puck handler in the offensive zone can skate all day long with little pressure. Only two players really playing right now is Gaborik and Henrik. Right now the Islanders can beat the NYR's.

Andrew.... I feel your pain (however I am able to catch Caps games on my home town Comcast Network... Sucks that even with the NHL Center Ice package, I am forced to only watch Caps games on CSN (DTV channel 642 here in Northen VA) and not be given the choice of watching either the home or away broadcast...
I can't stand listening to Craig Laughlin, Joe Benninati is fine (Joe B seems to have been an announcer for other teams in the past as well).
It's not even the fact that Laugher is a homer, he's the broadcaster for the hometown team, so I have no problem with that... it's his nasally delivery that grates at me like nails on a chalkboard.

I'm a Pens fan and Bob Errey is as homer as they get (but he has a way of cursing games from time-to-time - statements like the Pens can pretty much lock it up if they can get 1 more goal here.. and it's like halfway into the 2nd period and it would only make it like a 2 maybe 3 goal lead... as an announcer you don't talk about a no-hitter in basdeball, a shutout in hockey or that kicker X has never missed from 40 yards or less in football, and you can never declare a game over until the final horn or whistle sounds or the final out has been made.

Short story made long.... I think DTV is the ones being the biggest a$$es here... Versus had the same exact package/offer on the table for DTV, but DTV wanted to move Versus to a different (read: more expensive) packaged tier, which was not only going to eliminate Versus from something like 6 million homes that previously had Versus. So they (DTV) was also asking for more money (from the consumer) for a product that they were going to be receiving and zero inflated costs. The NHL needs to step in and carry Versus games on it's NHL Network (even though this would probably violate some sort of contractual obligation) and then demand the 2 sides get this thing done.
If I wasn't also DTVs b!tch with having Sunday Ticket, I would switch to my local cable provider and DTV could take a hike, but alas that sweet IN they got with the NFL to be the sole provider of the Sunday Ticket was evil genius. I used to install for DTV and a LOT of people got it strictly because they are the only ones who have the "ticket".

Damn, that was a long post.. guess the the cups of coffee are working.

Old School @#16. Usually a member of the winning team gets the #1 star. Perhaps in this case, it should have been Bradley for scoring the winning goal.

As a rangers fan I have the right to say that gaborik got the better of ovechkin with 2 goals but give credit to green for making two assists and varlamov did a heroic job of saving the net and even though Bradley lost to voros he roofs it past Hank for the win, even though the linesman got in the way and he didn't move away from the puck gave the caps their victory.
