Johnson rallies Kings past Panthers in SO

Preview | Box Score | Recap

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP)—Jack Johnson(notes) couldn’t quite finish his end-to-end rush in overtime. The Los Angeles Kings defenseman didn’t miss his chance in the shootout.

Johnson scored the only goal in the shootout, rallying the Kings to a 4-3 victory over the Florida Panthers on Monday night.

“I just wanted to make sure we got the two points,” Johnson said. “In that situation, it’s you against him (the goalie) and you want to make it count.”

Johnson’s rush in the final 10 seconds of overtime was the best scoring chance for either team in the extra period. He lost control of the puck after beating defenseman Jordan Leopold(notes) and skating in alone on Tomas Vokoun(notes).

In the shootout, he scored after Anze Kopitar(notes) shot wide on Los Angeles’ first shootout attempt. Johnson beat Vokoun after a deke to his forehand.

“I definitely wanted to help the team win in any way I could, whether it was in the overtime or the shootout,” Johnson said. “I’m glad it worked out for us.”

Jonathan Quick stopped Rostislav Olesz(notes) and Steven Reinprecht(notes) before clinching the victory with a stick save on Cory Stillman’s(notes) backhand off a deke.

Los Angeles improved to 2-2 in shootouts, while Florida dropped to 4-2. Both teams had won their previous game in a shootout Florida at home against the Islanders, 5-4, and Los Angeles at Tampa Bay, 2-1.

“It could go either way (in the shootout),” Quick said. “You just try to make the stops and let the rest take care of itself.”

Johnson and Jarret Stoll(notes) scored power-play goals, and Randy Jones(notes) scored short-handed for the Kings, who came back from a 2-0 deficit and closed out a five-game road trip at 3-2.

Quick finished with 26 saves for Los Angeles, which beat Florida for the fifth straight time.

Nathan Horton(notes), Stillman and Victor Oreskovich(notes) scored for the Panthers. Vokoun, who came in with three shutouts in his previous five starts, stopped 31 shots.

“Obviously, shootouts are a lottery,” Vokoun said. “They’re fun to win, but they’re not so much fun to lose. We came out on the short side today, but this game should have been won in regulation.”

Los Angeles scored three consecutive times before Oreskovich tied the game at 3 at 14:55 with his first NHL goal. Bryan Allen’s(notes) shot from the point went off someone in front of the net and floated to the side. Oreskovich put the puck down and put it into the open net.

“It hopped up there and I grabbed with my hand and had the whole empty net there,” said Oreskovich, a rookie playing in his seventh NHL game. “It’s great to get my first goal there, but if I would have missed that, it would have been pretty bad.

“It’s pretty exciting. The timing made it a little sweeter, I guess, but it’s unfortunate we didn’t get the two points. … Getting one is better than nothing.”

Jones had given the Kings a 3-2 lead at 7:58 of the third. With teammate Alexander Frolov(notes) in the penalty box for goaltender interference, Jones scored off a rebound when Vokoun couldn’t control Michal Handzus’(notes) high slap shot.

Johnson began the Kings’ comeback at 9:10 of the second with a slap shot from just inside the blue line.

Stoll tied the game 2-2 at 2:23 of the third period with a slap shot from the top of the right faceoff circle that deflected off Leopold. Stoll scored off a feed from Kopitar, who came into the game as the NHL’s scoring leader with 31 points.

“Last year, we might have packed it in after being down 2-0,” Quick said, “but this year we have shown a lot of character.”

Horton opened the scoring at 2:05 of the second with a power-play goal. He beat Quick over his right shoulder with a wrist from the wing.

Stillman scored 1:35 later on a 2-on-1 set up by a beautiful pass from Dennis Seidenberg(notes) from deep inside the Florida zone to Steven Reinprecht just inside the Kings blue line. Reinprecht then fed Stillman for a one-timer tip-in.

“I think the deciding factor for me was in the second period when we had two or three opportunities to extend the lead to three and put them away,” said Florida coach Pete DeBoer. “We didn’t do that. That’s why we only ended up with a point.”

NOTES: Kings LW Ryan Smyth(notes) sustained an upper-body injury in the third period and did not return. He will evaluated on Tuesday. … Kings D Rob Scuderi(notes) missed the game because of a lower-leg injury sustained in Saturday’s 2-1 shootout victory at Tampa Bay. … Kings coach Terry Murray coached the Panthers for two-plus seasons, starting in 1998. … Florida missed a chance to tie its longest winning streak of the season. … The Panthers haven’t beaten the Kings since Oct. 26, 2001.

Bad news for the Kings, they will be without Ryan Smyth, and Rob Scuderi tonight. Kings vs Flyers at Staples Center tonight at 7:30PM Pacific. It's going to be a tough game. Flyers have been playing well. Kings will make it to the playoffs this year if they win a lot of home games and at least 2 to 3 above all of road games. So far so good. Kings will have a lot of home games in January. Go Kings!

Great victory and good road trip. 6 points of out possible 10 is good enough. Ryan Smith got injured. It's going to be a tough game tomorrow night at Staples Center. Alexander Frolov is in a scoring drought. I hope he'll score a goal tomorrow night. Keep on winning Kings. Nice bounce back for Johnathan Quick after horrible game in Atlanta. I hope Kings won't collapse near the end of the season. If they don't, they will make it to the playoffs. Kings will play 2 home game and then go back on the road again. Kings have a lot of home in January and that's good. They have been playing well at home so far. They only 3 lost at home if I'm not mistaken. One of the 3 loses was a shootout lost to the Canuckleheads. The score for that lost is 2-1. Go Kings!

@16 cutloose, Actually a fair question sorry to say. The team has been losing money hand over fist since they foolishly decided (much like the Coyotes) to build an arena that is off the beaten path and has a number of games that conflict directly with the better positioned Miami Heat BB team. Add to that I saw several shots of fans roaming around the concourse (on intermission, pre-commercial breaks on FSW) and most of them were wearing jerseys from other teams! Saw a number of red Wing fans, a Devils supporter a few Kings fans (makes sense) and a few Panther jersey wearers. Now I agree that Home Jersey is tough on the eyes, but the Road white one is pretty nice. Lots of empty seats, sad to see that. Attendance apparently 12,500 in a 19,250 seat arena. That ain't gonna cut it. Oh well, wish the Panthers well. @17 DJ, Um I saw a replay of the interference call against Tampa it was close, not a bad call at all, could have swallowed the whistle but the call was made. Tampa still had a shot to win it, Kings did instead hence 2 pts. Kings, 1 pt. Lightning.

Nice game guys, proud you found the intensity on the last game of a long road trip. Great team effort, not our best game, but when you turned it on late it was clear who was the better team. Johnson had quite the eventful game, got a free lesson about the glass being his friend, but also learned a little about himself with that late rush and the shootout clinic he gave Vokoun (spelling?).

On power play, when Jarrett moves diagonally from point to low circle, we need to rotate low guy up to half boards, half-boards guy moves to point and point man moves to middle of ice at blue line. Last night, Jarrett went to the half-boards and we kinda froze there, but you could see the Panthers were caught off guard by it momentarily.

We start with wide separation, Zeus is in front of net taking the heroes job of screen man. The weak side point man (Stoll) comes down diagonally toward low circle man (Frolov, i.e.) and puck carrier at half-boards (Williams) simultaneously moves, with puck looking for open passing lanes, from half-boards toward point area (Doughty is at point). As Williams moves to point with puck Frolov is replaced by Stoll so he comes up to replace Williams. Frolov can also move into open space just above and past face-off dot (Where Brett Hull would be...) Doughty at point moves to middle of ice wanting the one-time pass, but he cannot go too far past middle in case of a turnover and he has to get back. It is important that a pass is made quickly during this movement to Frolov, or Stoll, or Doughty, but it is going to be the second pass that makes an open lane for the quick shot. At this time, we now have either: two attack triangles if Frolov is near faceoff dot, or else we have 4 on 2 1/2 if Frolov stays at half-boards. Williams at point, having passed to someone, is also wanting one-timer and prepped for defensive coverage in case of turnover. Once the shot goes to the net, Stoll goes to high slot on strong side (with second objective to provide defensive coverage) Frolov goes to net for rebound and Williams moves down from point to high slot on weak side, another diagonal move through center of ice opening lanes.
Great effort last night, nice one-timer form Johnson, excellent composure and desire, just a tough gritty victory under adverse conditions.

Exactly, that kicking of Quick's stick was ridiculous and was a definite a penalty.

As it goes, the Kings defense pressured the Panthers long enough to take the lead after being down by 2. Other than Johnson horrible pass which led to the Panther's 3rd goal, the Kings played a solid checking game. Kings should have won in regulation but so what, they got 2 out of it and are coming home 4 points behind the Sharks. 28 points looks really good at this time of the season.

The tying goal should never have been allowed, since Oreskovich scored by first launching Quick's stick into the corner (which is a penalty), then waiting for a chance to put the puck in.

Nice finish to the Road Trip Kings, 3-2, 6pts. that ain't bad, especially when you had a complete collapse losing by a touchdown to the Thrashers right in the middle! Hope the Kings can maintain the intensity coming home, especially with the Skating Apes coming to town Wednesday. Would love to see Randy Jones pay the flyers back for throwing him under the bus! After that the Farmer John Family game vs. the tough Calgary Flames, let's not lay a Saturday afternoon egg like you did vs. Nashville, Kings, especially since I'm going to that one! Go Kings Go!

Two games in a row two injuries to key players. First Scuderi and now Smyth. Smyth took a pretty big hip check at the beginning of the 2nd period. He went to the locker room played a few shifts in the 2nd and didn't come out for the 3rd. They're saying it's an upper body injury but you never know now a days. According to Murray Scuderi should be available for the Philly game on Wednesday.

The PP goal at the beginning of the 3rd is exactly what we need to do. move the puck quick spread the D for a cross ice pass everyone's out of position two guys screening the goalie in front is the recipe for success on the PP.

Randy Jones is this year's Quincey 2G 2A already.

Bad decision by Jack Johnson with 5 mins to go in the 3rd he should have just thrown the puck up the boards instead of trying to clear it up the middle of the ice. That led directly to the game tying goal.
Quick was enraged he lost his stick while making two huge saves from the turnover and when the puck went behind the net he reached down for his stick and a Florida player swept his stick into the corner Florida scored right after that.

Johnson made up for his mistake by scoring on a beautiful move in the SO getting the point back for the kings. Quick is sharp in SO's he hasn't given up anything in the past two shootouts 6 for 6. A decent road trip eventhough they had that stinker in the ATL. Philly is going to be a tough test on Wednesday.

The kings PP is stagnant lately. There is no movement and all the passes are short. On the PP we need to move the puck faster to catch the D out of position. Right now we move the puck so slow and deliberate all the shots from the point are getting blocked. Most of the time the passes are so telegraphed that the D has time to recover and block the point shot time and time again. No one is moving either everyone is camped out in their spots waiting for a one timer. Earlier in the season our PP was most effective getting the puck behind the net to smyth and letting him find someone driving the net up the middle. Vokoun has not been tested through 2 periods most of his saves have been routine and Florida is blocking a ton of shots. On the other end of the ice Quick has made some great saves on point blank shots he's really kept this one close so far. Near the end of the 2nd terry murray shuffled up the lines a bit and the Kings have looked more dangerous in the final few minutes of the 2nd. Man, a few more ticks on the clock and this thing would be 2-2 we pulled quick and got the shot past Vokoun just a little too late.

It was good to see Simmonds get in a scrap tonight he's been skating with some real intensity the last couple of games and he was firing off punches with both fists in his scrap.

The Frolov, Handzus, Simmonds line has been most effective tonight. I like the way Richardson and Parse skate they both skate like this shift is their last shift in the NHL real intense I'd like to see that kind of urgency in a few more guys tonight and the kings should be able to turn this one around.

Good defense = a victory. No cheap passes and keep the pressure on Vokoun. Pepper him with shots and some are bound to go in. Go Kings! Keep this season a winning one, especially on the road!
