Flyers snap Devils’ eight-game win streak

Preview | Box Score | Recap

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—The Philadelphia Flyers game plan was to keep it simple against the streaking New Jersey Devils.

Darroll Powe(notes), Scott Hartnell(notes), and James van Riemsdyk(notes) scored as the Flyers edged New Jersey 3-2 to snap the Devils’ eight game winning streak on Monday night.

“Keep the puck in their zone, no turnovers at the blue line, things like that,” van Riemsdyk said. “We didn’t want to give them anything easy on offense because we knew they wouldn’t give us anything.”

Zach Parise(notes) scored in a goal-mouth scramble with 0.6 seconds left in regulation and David Clarkson(notes) also scored for the Devils, who fell one win short of tying the NHL record of 10 road wins to start the season, set by the 2006-07 Buffalo Sabres.

“You never want to lose, but we knew that we weren’t going to go 41-0 on the road,” Parise said. “But 9-0 is pretty good, so we will just try to start it up again in Nashville (on Thursday).”

Claude Giroux(notes) had two assists and Ray Emery(notes) made 33 saves for the Flyers, who have won six of their last seven games.

“We knew that they (Devils) were pretty hot coming in,” Giroux said. “We stuck to our game plan by keeping in simple and shutting down their top forwards with great teamwork. We put a lot of pressure on them, made sure they didn’t get a lot of room with the puck, and waited for our chances.”

Patrik Elias(notes) had two assists and Martin Brodeur(notes) stopped 32 shots for the Devils, who trailed the entire game.

Powe put the Flyers ahead by shoveling in the puck from the slot at 7:11 of the first period. Arron Asham(notes) set the score up by intercepting a clearing attempt by Brodeur and passing to Giroux, who backhanded a pass to Powe.

Hartnell got credit for a power-play goal 44 seconds into the second period after Devils defenseman Mike Mottau(notes) attempted to intercept his centering pass and deflected the puck into the net.

Skating with 3 seconds left on a two-man advantage, Clarkson got the Devils on the board with 4:18 left in the second with a wrist shot from the crease.

Philadelphia made it 3-1 at 10:38 of the third period when van Riemsdyk picked up a loose puck in the slot and scored unassisted with a wrist shot.

“Brodeur’s a tough goalie but I think I got a little lucky,” van Riemsdyk said of his game-winning goal. “I sort of handcuffed him.”

Asham left the game in the second period with an oblique strain on his left side and is expected to be out between 10 and 14 days.

NOTES: Dave “The Hammer” Schultz, the primary enforcer on the 1974 and 1975 Stanley Cup champions, was inducted as the 20th member of the Flyers’ Hall of Fame in pre-game ceremonies. … Philadelphia LW van Riemsdyk returned after missing one game (flu). …The Devils played the first of three straight road games that also includes stops at Nashville snd Dallas. …The Flyers have scored the first goal in 14 of 17 games this season. … New Jersey LW Parise, who also had an assist, scored a point for the fifth straight game.

@45 NJ Devil. Actually, Zubrus is not more productive than Rolston. Zubrus is 2-5-7, while Rolston is 4-3-7. But your point is well taken Rolston is also a huge mistake. And yet the Devils had no room for Shanahan on the top 3 lines. What a mistake. Dump the both of them.

Daniel, wow, name calling?! LOL The point I was making was it was a close game even if NJ didn't get a shot in a 12 minute span it means that NJ was playing good enough D where Philly didn't dominate where it had the chance to in that time span. The point I was making is it was a game of "what if", anything could have happened and Philly didn't dominate the game as some may have suggested. Philly won, they beat a red hot Devils team, nothing else left to say. How old are you that you need to resort to name calling? You have an inferiority/superiority complex? I must be retarded, here I am talking about morality and ethics an a board renown for its "class" (or lack thereof). Talk about fighting an uphill battle..

Dutch, yes, we are now happy.
and, I know it's not easy to fathom, but Hartnell is quite normal off ice. A family member of mine did a home inspection for Mr Fartsmell a short time ago.

i4ni, your an idiot. How the hell would NJ scoring a goal down by 1 (had mottau not put it in it would have been 2-1 at that point) been the game winning goal for NJ? Scoring a goal that ties the game isn't a game winner. Retard.

@46 Michael M, The flyers are playing well. OK I admit it. Happy? @IBG you are right about my feelings about Pennywise Hartnell. I really was disappointed when VS. interviewed his dad a couple weeks ago and he seemed like a pretty good guy from the plains of Saskatchewan, that Hartnell spoke coherent English didn't sit well with me either. As for "Emery has to fail or else".... Or else there will be a complete collapse of society and even worse I will be wrong. That just isn't an option.

Ray Emery is probably one of the best goalies we had in a long time! Ever since Ron Hextall we were alittle weary with our goalies. Martin Biron would be good but then got cold for a while. I think Emery can become one of the best goalies in Philly along side Berine Parent.

Heated debate as to whether or not a regular season game in November was close because they used the word "edged" in the article. Talk about splitting hairs...

The Flyers are on a nice run, but as we've seen it doesn't mean much til April.

Lou M, give credit where it is due. The game was close. Had not Mottau put the puck past Brodeur the game would have been even closer and that 0.4 scramble when NJ scored could have been the game winner in the Devils favor. The Flyers are a good team, I'll give credit where it's due. Typical Devils/Flyers games are like playoff games. Very rarely do you see one team blow out the other. I'm just proud on NJ finding ways to win and going on an 8-game winning streak considering how many injuries we have. As a Devils fan, I cannot WAIT until the playoffs start considering how well as a team NJ has played thus far. Just admit that as an open-minded fan, you wouldn't want to face NJ in the 1st round of the playoffs anymore than, as a Devils fan, I'd hope to see Philly in the first round. These two teams should be playing each other in the Eastern Conference Finals in my opinion.

The flyers may have won this game, but we have the rest of the season to make up for it. Flyers swallow.

    Dutch-bag,
"Fartsmell sucks"....that is kinda like that whole "crosby sucks" argument right? It is not really that the guy sucks, but more of a "hate your guts" type thing. I get it, your admitting he is an effective player and you can't stand him. gotcha.
And it is too early to give Emery a pat on the back for games well played because it is only 6 weeks into the season, yet there is plenty of evidence there to predict Emery will fail? Emery is back in the NHL and playing well with something to prove. You won't admit it because he has to fail, right? he has to fail....because....if he...doesn't...

The Flyers "edged" New Jersey??? I don't know what game you were watching, but it was never really close. The Flyers dominated nearly the entire game. The Devils went 12 straight minutes without a shot on goal. The final score (which came with 0.4 seconds left on the clock and after Emery was interfered with) was meaningless.

    Dutch,
You are a troll. You are known as manny things as I see you successfully piss a lot people off on the this site. This is NOT an accomplishment, as it is not hard to do.
You have proven night after night that you have nothing better to do. Quite often on manny other threads you try to stir the pot, with your posts.
You are not that knowledgeable and unfortunately do not point out anything useful. Especially for how much free time you spent on these threads trolling.
I dont care your a Pens fan. They beat the Ducks. Go post over there and be happy. Or has life gotten so lonely that joy only comes when you type a "good comeback"?

Dutch, post all you want, but really you've got nothing. Your "points" are such old news and do not reflect what is going on right now. Too many "if this" and "if that" going on. It's not August anymore, we have seen how the team plays. Just admit it, the Flyers are playing well.

@41 Doc, I'm pretty much the equivalent of "da fat man" over here, and all I do is point out facts. Oh well these long suffering organizations have short fuses. RE: Randy Jones, funny that when the flyers ran him through the ringer a lot of flyer fans were arguing he got the short end of the stick, now he's chopped liver because you're now thinking, holy $hit he may actually have been better than some of the clowns we kept on board. @43 IBG, don't worry Fartsmell still sucks and Ray-Ray WILL have a meltdown or locker room blow up at some point. The guy couldn't hang in the Fishbowl of Ottawa (LOL) and he's going to be fine when he starts having off ice incidents, loses a couple games and the philly "fans" and media are all over him like a cheap suit? Good grief how many games have the flyers played anyway? 10? Oh a whole 17, barely 20% of the way through, way to go Ray solid Goal Play and a good team mate and we're already 6 weeks into the season. Amazing! If ever a scenario for me to come back and say I told you so was more clear cut, I don't know what it was.

Man, that Hartnall guy is something else. what is he trying to do, have another 30+ goal season? Doesnt he know the blind haters have already predicted a dismal season for him?
    .
and that Emery fellow. Who does he think he is beating the Devils twice and showing up Brodeur twice. Doesn't he know he was labeled a downgrade from Biron by the 5 inch penis club (pens fans) in the very first week of the season?
    .
Langanbrunner had some guts to lay on top of Emery like that in the last 2 seconds of the game with Dave "The Hammer" Schultz looming around in the same building.

Randy Jones will play good for a bit then drop off. He has no work ethic. He would sit in the Flyers locker room and watch tv as soon as practice was over, while other guys continued to work out. When he got injured the offseason before last he didnt tell the Flyers until 2 months later! He did it golfing and didnt say anything until training camp. I am glad to see him gone and turning the puck over somewhere else. His NHL career wont last long unless he decides he actually cares about hockey.

    PRONGER!!!!!!!!!

He contributes so much to this team. He does so in aspects that are measurable (Ice time, blocked shots, assists, goals, etc.) as well as things that can not be measured (confidence, calm, focus, etc.).

HE IS THE DIFFERENCE this year! Go Flyers!
