Predators blank Canadiens 2-0

Preview | Box Score | Recap

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP)—A record-breaking night for the Nashville Predators left them feeling victorious, while a record-tying night for Carey Price(notes) left him with a loss.

Steve Sullivan(notes) scored two goals and Pekka Rinne(notes) made 20 saves to lead the Predators to a 2-0 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night.

Nashville outshot Montreal 55-20 and the Predators have won two straight and six of their past eight. Montreal has dropped four of six. The 55 shots are a franchise record for Nashville.

Rinne got his second shutout of the season and ninth of his career. Sullivan had just two goals in the team’s first 17 games of the season. Price made a career-high 53 saves for Montreal. The 53 saves tied Wayne Thomas’ Canadiens record for most saves in a game. Thomas did it March 10, 1974 in a 5-4 win at Pittsburgh.

“They threw a lot of pucks at the net tonight,” Price said. “Records aside, we were here to get two points, not a record.”

“He performed well, there is no doubt,” Canadiens coach Jacques Martin said of his goaltender. “It’s unfortunate that his teammates didn’t take advantage of a performance like that.”

Sullivan scored his first goal at 10:48 of the opening period when he collected a rebound of his own shot and was able to beat Price with a backhand.

The Predators set a franchise record with 24 shots on goal in the first period. The previous record for shots in a period was 23 set Feb. 28, 2004, against the New York Rangers.

“It’s just the mindset, you break down teams’ defense when you put it on net,” Nashville coach Barry Trotz said. “They are scrambling for pucks, they are reaching, and we are being firm in their offensive zone.”

J.P. Dumont(notes) was credited with the only assist on Sullivan’s goal. Dumont leads the Predators in points this season with 12.

“I’m not going to lie, I really feel comfortable with J.P., and I find that he really settles the play down for us in the offensive end,” Sullivan said. “He’s so good at puck protection and nifty little passes that when you are open, you are getting the puck.”

Sullivan made it 2-0 at 12:59 of the third period.

With the Predators on a 5-on-3 power play, Price stopped a slap shot from Nashville defenseman Shea Weber(notes), but the rebound came right to Sullivan in the left circle where he fired a one-timer by Price on the stick side.

Rinne has won six of his last seven and improved his record on the season to 6-4-0.

“The guys on defense did a great job, I didn’t have to face too many shots,” Rinne said. “Obviously you have your good saves and your moments, but it was one of the easier games that we have had this year so far.”>

Notes: The Canadiens made their first trip to Nashville since Feb. 22, 2007. … Montreal right wing Brian Gionta(notes) missed his first game of the season with a lower-body injury. … Saturday’s game was the first of five consecutive home games for the Predators. They play seven of their remaining eight November games at home.

@19 Mike T. Bank on that bro'. There is no doubt in my mind the Canadiens are going to finish behind Toronto in the reg. season which will earn me a lot of money from old Montreal pals who I have bets on re that. Just check out the Montreal Gazette at www.montrealgazette.com and you will get all the info you need about the sorry state of affairs in Montreal. At least they have the Alouettes! lol lol
@18 Dutch The kid is from Windsor eh? Yuk! Poor guy. I think I've read his posts before, and he seriously needs to get to school and learn how to write. Sorry Nwaf. Maybe you're new to Canada. Good luck. Study hard. You can do it.
Price put on a show for his country music heroes in Nashville - there's a tear in Carey's beer and he's crying for ya dear, you were on my lonely mind. Carey needs to go to Hamilton for awhile, but it might be too late for him now. Up and down performances. I think he needs to get out of the Montreal Maelstrom like Roy, Theodore etc.... One of sooooo many Gainey blunders and gaffes playing that kid right away and trading Huet away on the eve of the 2007 playoffs after the Canadiens had won the Eastern conference. Amazing. And we saw the inevitable results: Habs squeaked by Boston in seven and then were summarily dispatched in five by the Flyers with Price playing very very poorly. Poor kid. I really feel sorry for him. Why Montreal isn't playing Halak consistently is very puzzling, but it's possible Gainey invested so much into this kid that they feel he will one day come around. I would trade him now while they can still get some good value for him.
@Da Bomb. You're just a punk who thinks you know me somehow. My personality? It's pathetic? Get to school and study little boy. I take care of my daughter very very well thank you very much. What's dabomb anyway? The herb you puff? Be a good boy and show some respect for your elders. I'm 46 by the by. Good guess. Good boy.
Gionta now down for Montreal. Markov out. Gill out. Spacek and Bergeron not very good defencemen. Plekanec easy to contain if you hit the hell out of him. Cammalleri excellent - was a pal of his and played shinny hockey with him with my stepson when he was coming up through the Toronto minor hockey system. I hope he keeps on doing great. Gomez a huge mistake for Montreal. 16 goals for the Rangers in the past two years running, $7.5 million dollar contract and Gainey trades for him giving up Higgins and a tremendous prospect in Ryan McDonagh. Wretched move that allowed Sather the cap room to sign Gaborik. And look at what Gaborik has done so far for the Rangers and how well that team is doing.
And the piece in Friday's Gazette about how the Canadiens could have drafted Anze Kopitar, leading scorer in the league this year with the Kings but instead took Carey Price. What a pity for Montreal. Bob blew up the team last year, and thought it was a good idea. Not a good idea the way he went about it. Kovalev desperately wanted to stay in Montreal. Gainey didn't sign him on time. And the mistakes just go on and on and on with this man and he gets a pass. Sixth year on the job and he has led the Canadiens to exactly one playoff round victory over Boston in 2007 as noted above. Amazing he has not been fired yet by Pierre Boivin. Sad. Habs fans in Montreal calling for his head. They want him gone yesterday.
Fortunately the same situation does not exist in Toronto. We have a proven winner in Brian Burke, and a lot of upside that will serve us well in the future. Bright future for Toronto despite some tough recent years under JFJ, but all that is changing slowly but surely. We're not doing as well as we would like right now obviously and that is painful, but I certainly would not want to be a Canadiens fan. Nine wins and seven of them in OT. And they're still two games under .500 at 9-11. The Leafs are only seven points back with two games in hand. We'll make that up by January or the Super Bowl at the latest and finish well ahead of the Canadiens at the end of the year in mid-April. And my bank account will grow exponentially fatter.
    GO LEAFS GO!

Make T ,You just don,t get it ! Both teams are lousy. But at least the Habs might have a future. They still own all their draft picks plus and when Markov comes back then we'll add one of the NHL's best. But you know 'finishing lower then the Laffs has a certain appeal because we would land a future superstar in one of the top 3 picks.Naw they can't be that bad!

Who's team should be bashed? The Leafs played awful at the start of the season but 55 shots? Its embarrassing. Most shots given up by the Habs in over 30 years. If it weren't for some lucky OT wins, the Habs would be in the same situation the Leafs are. It's pretty funny to see Hab fans like you bashing the Leafs because at the end of the season, in all likelihood, Toronto will be ahead of Montreal.

I'm a long time Habs fan, it's too early to tell, but this team is having trouble finding chemistry, what i find the most troubling is that the 3rd and 4th lines aren't bringing much energy to the game, or much toughness. Guys like Lapierre, Latendresse, Moen, Stewart should be out there delivering energy hits, but not much of that going on.

I don't know what's going on inside the team, i thought Jacques Martin would be able to form a disciplined group at the very least defensively, but it hasn't been the case. Injuries aside, they played with zero passion last night...the only guy that showed up as Carey price, and guess what...he loves Country music! I guess the rest of the team don't...

Glad your so tremendously interested in my perspective of the Habs, @ # 1 Habhatter. The Habs as i've stated all year are at best a middle of the pack team.( not a big deal with 30 of them, and 2nd place is not something a Hab fan brags about.) Unlike the Laff fans AKA -you- making the playoffs ,even beating the Laffs means very little.(I just love it ,so i can hear their crying and excuses). The difference here ,i agree Latendresse,Lapierre, even Kositsyn ,should be Hamilton bound.Maybe your right about management changes. But if this team tanks at least we have our draft picks to hopefully rebuild into all that matters to a Hab fan. ANOTHER STANLEY CUP!

@7 That is hilarious man! Miami, Nashville, Raleigh, Phoenix all in their death throes along with Atlanta. Maybe even Columbus. Send these teams home where they belong! One hockey world in Canada eh One World? Eh? Chuckle, chuckle.
@6 Dutch Really man. I remember the Tugnutt stunner very well. Great memory! What a night he had and yes it looks like Carrie Price had a night to remember too but he couldn't quite get it done thank all the hockey gods.
@8 Nwaf A. The Habs usually give it a full effort. Must not have tonight. They are not a very good hockey team is what Canadiens fans need to realize. Very mediocre team that will only go as far as their goaltending will take them. Popgun offence, suspect defence at best especially without Markov, O'Byrne and HMS Hal Gill. They're hurting badly. "......while the rest just became morons." Nice writing bro'. Sheesh! You must be from the States. lol lol lol

    YvetteK,

You must be trolling. Whatever, I'll bite.

Actually, you just come across as jealous of Canadian fans taking the p!ss out of each other. We do have fans that care. So do American teams, but not in every market, not in the numbers they need.

Great fans in Carolina, but they still need to hit the streets to "save the team." After a summer fo turmoil in Phoenix, nobody is showing up (except the team). Let me spell it out for you - nobody in Phoenix cares outside the 4 or 5 thousand hardcore fans.

Bottom line Winnipeg and Quebec City deserve teams more than do several of the American cities that have them. We have WHL, OHL, and Q teams that draw more interest than some American teams get. So bl*w me.
