Thrashers rout Kings 7-0

Preview | Box Score | Recap

ATLANTA (AP)—If Ilya Kovalchuk(notes) plays this well with a gimpy right foot, how much better will he perform when he’s 100 percent?

Kovalchuk hardly seems to care. The Atlanta captain knows he and the Thrashers can only improve.

“Oh, definitely,” he said. “It’s still going to take me time to heal all the way.”

Kovalchuk and Maxim Afinogenov(notes) each had two goals and two assists to help the Thrashers beat the Los Angeles Kings 7-0 on Friday night for their third straight victory.

Atlanta rookie Evander Kane(notes), the fourth overall draft pick, also scored two goals and had an assist. His fifth goal made it 1-0 at the 10:22 mark of the second. His sixth was a short-handed goal that ended the scoring with 3:26 remaining.

Kovalchuk, who returned the night before in New York from a broken foot bone that sidelined him for three weeks, finished with a goal and two assists in Thursday’s 5-3 win over the Rangers.

“The most important thing is we got four points in the bank,” he said. “It doesn’t matter who scores.”

The Kings, who have lost three of four, outshot Atlanta 38-21, but couldn’t keep Ondrej Pavelec(notes) from getting his first career shutout.

“I didn’t play in the last two games, and we won, so I needed to keep it up,” Pavelec said. “We played great hockey tonight.”

Afinogenov and Kane each had a goal and an assist during a 5:04 stretch of the second period that included Kings goalie Jonathan Quick getting chased and major penalties and game misconducts to Atlanta’s Chris Thorburn(notes) and Los Angeles’ Raitis Ivanans(notes).

Kings forward Justin Williams(notes) was assessed a major and a game misconduct for checking from behind with 1:59 remaining.

“When it got to 4-0, everybody was frustrated,” Los Angeles coach Terry Murray said. “Nobody wants to let a game get out of control. Nobody wants to get physical, but the score of the game dictates a lot of that.”

Kovalchuk scored his 11th goal 12:28 into the second to make it 2-0. His 12th goal came on the power play with 14 minutes remaining to pad the lead at 5-0.

“The most important thing is we got four points,” Kovalchuk said. “It doesn’t matter who scores.”

After defenseman Zach Bogosian’s(notes) seventh goal put the Thrashers ahead 3-0 at the 14:16 mark, Murray pulled Quick and brought in Erik Ersberg(notes).

Kane’s fifth goal, a wide wraparound outside the left goal post, slid between Quick’s legs to make it 1-0 at the 10:22 mark of the second.

Quick dropped to 10-6-2 after stopping 11 of 14 shots. Ersberg made four saves against seven shots.

“It stunk,” Ersberg said. “I can’t do anything about it now. You can’t worry about it too long. I think we are the better team.”

Kovalchuk, whose 309 career goals lead the NHL since Atlanta drafted him No. 1 overall in 2001, likes how Afinogenov is assimilating after spending his first nine seasons under Buffalo coach Lindy Ruff.

“Max looks like he got a second life,” Kovalchuk said. “In Buffalo, he took a beating by the coach. He’s one of the hardest workers. Every day, he’s smiling.”

NOTES: Kings C Anze Kopitar(notes), who began the night leading the NHL with 30 points and tied for , snapped a five-game points streak. … Thrashers C Bryan Little(notes) had a light groin strain and missed his first game this season. After finishing second on the club with 31 goals in 79 games last season, Little, a 2006 first-round draft pick, has two goals and four assists in 15 games. … Atlanta improved to 5-7-0, including 3-3-0 at Philips Arena, against the Kings.

Pavelec should be credited with his 1st career shutout. Hedberg did not enter the game at any point . Yahoo has him playing 0:39 seconds but he definently did not.

All these delusional idiots that are even mentioning the Kings outplaying the Thrashers are just laughable. You can't say the Kings "outplayed" the thrashers because they sustained absolutely nothing and if you'd like to see how bad the Kings really are, check out the video highlights: http://sports.yahoo.com/video/player/feat/NHL_Highlights/16638670

Thrashers DOMINATED this one. Anyone who suggests otherwise would probably argue that Paul Newman outboxed that guy in Cool Hand Luke because at the 26 second mark he got a slight jab in. Kings fans are laughable. Enjoy the anchor like decent to the bottom of the West standings, your team's run is over.

Hey Ersberg, the Kings were the better team if you remove the Goalies from the equation! @wtfk, I agree the Thrashers had prime chances, a couple of break away goals etc.. but if I'm not mistaken they lit the lamp 7 times on their last 10 shots! That is insane. The Kings could not have done worse pulling the Goalie and playing 6 on 5. Rather odd game, the Kings made some bad plays and mistakes and the Thrashers were excellent cashing them in, however this was odd in that I thought the Kings did outplay them on a lot of levels, it reminded me of Game 3 at the Great Western Forum back in the 1990 Playoffs vs. the Edmonton Oilers. You'd have to be a long time Kings fan to recall they were down 2-0 in the series and for some unknown reason the Kings put a piece of swiss cheese in net named Ron Scott. The Kings totally outplayed and out hit the Oilers yet trailed 4-2 after 1 due to Scott giving up 4 goals on 10 shots. Indicative of how bad the guy was the Oilers beat him on a blue line slapper that got waved off on a close offsides... I don't remember if he played in the 2nd period or not but all the momentum was gone and the Oil went on to take the game and sweep the series the next one. This game reminded me of that just because even if Pavelec had been so-so and given up 3 or 4 goals the Kings still would have gotten Thrashed. Pi$$ poor play Quick and Ersberg, I suggest you guys donate your game checks to charity!

Gimpy and Kovalchuk do not belong in the same sentence. He's a tough guy, even travelled with the team while on IR (now that's a Captain!). Gosh, its good to be Russian in Atlanta.

Wow! Devils are 9-0 on the road! Almost every team have injuries. If Pens lost at home, they can't excuse themselves because E Malkin is out. Look at Red Wings. They have a ton of injuries. Their good players won't return until near the end of the season. Like Johan Franzen, and J Williams. They still win roads and home games. Thrashers vs Kings tonight at Atlanta. Kings had a lot of success againts the Thrashers on the road and at home. THE KINGS LOST last night 7-0. Ondrej Pavelec stood on his head. The referees called a stupid penalty in the 3rd period with just 1:59 remaining. Justin Williams got the call. He nudged Schubert from behind near the door and the door was opened and Schubert fell down and got hurt. How the hex did Williams know the door was opened? That was a stupid call. 5 minutes major penalty. Bad mistake by the referees. Kings still have goal tending issues. Kings will bounce back tonight. Go Kings!

I am a Kings fan. I am loyal. It is not easy today. We could say that if we had scored during many of the second period flurries and goal-mouth scrambles that Atlanta somehow stopped while letting two forwards cherry-pick at the blue line, that we would have been ahead 3-1 at the end of the second period, but that is not what happened. So, forget the what-ifs, or any other excuses. 7-0 is a humiliation. Show me sonething against Tampa guys, I want to believe.

    What we need:

Continue the excellent cycling down low, but please please please develop the ability to one-time from the blue line when we pass from low to high. Force opponents into the defensive shell by cycling, and when you get them all rounded up in the "inside position" throw the puck to our defensemen, create havoc by sending the puck to the blue line for the quick strike on goal. Rebounds will happen, and by the way after you make the pass out high get your azz to the high slot on the weak side of the ice for the rebound.

Hit somebody; I would love to see the body count after the Atlanta game. Did we have ANY hits through the second period? It is one thing to play strong from boards to dots, it's another to actually play a physical game. We got sucked into the Atlanta style of run and gun, we need to use puck control and offensive zone time PLUS early physicality on the forecheck; hit and seal, stick and pin, control the tempo.

Create movement on the power play: Especially the 5 on 3, but also the 5 on 4. Note Niedermayer with the "rover", Blake moving from D to crease, etc. Let's face it, we are not that good at one-timer's. I mean, we just do not use it and can't get an effective shot off quickly. Did you see Kovalchuk's (spelling?) release? Okay, he is one of the best, but we need to learn to pass it harder and faster for the one-timer, we need to learn where to pass it into our guy's "wheelhouse", we need to be able to move to the pass, and we need to expect that pass. To set up the one-timer, hoever, we need deception or else it gets blocked. Movement creates that deception and opens lanes. Guys moving in and out form the high slot, rotating from boards to corner to crease WITHOUT the puck, moving toward the net for potential shot while men away from puck MOVE TO CREATE A PASSING LANE. Even with 5 on 3, all we do is remain static and try to set up a one-timer. Make it a 4 on 3 with our 5th guy roving, doing the globetrotter weave with 2 other guys AWAY FROM THE PUCK, skating diagonally through the opponent's triangle, and then having the guy you are skating at begin his own ramble toward another guy. Use the extra men to confuse, use the extra men to skate by in front of the crease for a moving screen, use the extra men to overload one area of the ice, use the extra men to spread out with greater spacing so the lanes are wider for the opponent to cover. Instead, we stand still, we stand still close together, and then we make slow passes to an obvious slap shot.

Maintain gap control- If they are gonna have two forwards out high at their blue line while we are pressing offensively, we especially need to use greater spacing on the cycle, looking for a defenseman coming down weak side for the backdoor play. That means our cycle guys have to work to cover the strong side defenseman as he rotates to cover the weak side area vacated by the back door play.

We got a good game in us, we can score and we can control the puck. Minor tweaks in what offensive tactics we use will also slow down the other team's offensive regroup and rushes.

Tampa likes run and gun: do we play the same or do we improve? Is it going to be King's hockey or Lightning hockey?

Wait a second, Erik Ersberg...your team got your butts handed to you on a silver platter and you dare say you THINK your Los Angeles Kings were the better team?? News flash, buddy...just because you outshoot a team by 17 doesn't mean you win...you got to beat the goalie, and in this game...let's see, how many times did you beat Ondrej Pavelec of the Thrashers...? I'm checking the box score and I see all Atlanta goals, nothing for the Kings on 38 shots...you got BLANKED, man! Let the scoreboard say who was really the better team, not the shots on goal. BTW, go Thrashers!

It's BS to put this on the Kings goaltending. They should have stopped more shots, but the shots that went in were generally prime chances given up by crappy defensive play. It was a bad team game, and the Kings should graciously admit that the Thrashers came to play.

This "we're a better team" crap sucks. I'm a Kings fan, and my response is "then play like the better team." There's nothing more disrespectful than to claim the team that beat you isn't better than you are, because obviously, one team was better in the game, and it wasn't the one with the guy opening his mouth.

@20 You didn't miss anything assuming your a Kings fan. Pavelec was great. Kings were just a little off on their shots and the Goal play by both Quick and Ersberg was atrocious. Kings outplayed Atlanta but made way too many mistakes. I really hadn't ever watched the Thrashers, I like their style of play. Beats watching a frickin' Trappers, er Devils game! Pick up the pieces tomorrow gents, 7-0 is a loss the same as 3-2, so forget it and move on.
