Pyorala helps Flyers beat Blues in shootout

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Mika Pyorala(notes) was satisfied, even if he’s still looking for his first career goal.

Pyorala scored in the shootout to lead the Philadelphia Flyers to a 2-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Saturday night.

Pyorala’s goal in the fourth round was the difference as the Flyers won their fourth consecutive game. Philadelphia’s Claude Giroux(notes) and St. Louis’ Brad Boyes(notes) each scored in the second round.

Shootout goals aren’t reflected in a player’s career statistics, so Pyorala will have to wait for his first official tally.

“That’s a little strange, but I hope I get a real goal soon,” said Pyorala, 28, who has played in 14 NHL games.

Pyorala flipped a backhand shot past Chris Mason(notes) in the Blues’ first shootout this season.

“I would’ve liked to make one more save, but that’s the way it goes,” said Mason, who stopped 35 shots. “It took a while to get to our first shootout, so it was a little bit of a feeler.”

Scott Hartnell(notes) scored in regulation for the Flyers, who improved to 83-39-17 overall against the Blues, including 47-12-10 at home. He has a goal in four of his past five games.

“Coming back after playing last night (against Buffalo), we needed to get off to a good start and make sure we were moving our feet and getting on the attack early,” Philadelphia’s Chris Pronger(notes) said. “We were able to do that. We had a pretty decent first period, and it kind of built from there. “

The struggling Blues, who entered with the NHL’s fourth-worst record, have dropped four consecutive games, but coach Andy Murray thinks his team is playing better.

“It was a 1-1 hockey game and both teams were going hard to the net,” he said. “We watched the Flyers team dismantle Buffalo—and Buffalo has been playing very well. Our team battled hard and as long as you keep working like this, you get rewarded down the road. We’ll find a way to get two points if we keep playing this hard.”

Hartnell gave the Flyers the lead with 7:45 remaining in the second period. Streaking down the left side, he deflected Giroux’s cross-ice pass past Mason. His momentum carried him into the net, and officials reviewed the goal to determine whether he kicked the puck as he slid.

St. Louis (5-7-2) tied it in the third when T.J. Oshie(notes) corralled Roman Polak’s(notes) blue-line shot and flipped it past Ray Emery(notes) at 5:43.

The Flyers (9-4-1) almost grabbed the lead again midway through the third. Mason stopped Hartnell’s rebound attempt but his glove appeared to be behind the line in TV replays. The play wasn’t reviewed.

“It was right on top of his pad, and I pushed his pad,” Hartnell said. “I didn’t know where the puck was because I got hit right after. It was kinda weird that they didn’t take some extra time (to review).”

Hartnell also nearly won the game in overtime with some nice stick work, but Mason made a sprawling save.

In his first career game against St. Louis, Emery stopped 30 shots.

NOTES: Mason shut out the Flyers in their only meeting last season. … Philadelphia general manager Paul Holmgren said James van Riemsdyk(notes) likely has a break in the tip of the left pinky finger, after the rookie was hit by a Jeff Carter(notes) shot in the third. … Pronger, who spent 1996-2004 with the Blues, had an assist. He now has a point in nine of his 12 games, and 14 points overall— three goals and 11 assists. … Ole-Kristian Tollefsen(notes) left after slamming into the boards in the third period. Holmgren said he has a mild concussion and could be “out for a little bit.”

G-man, your right. just imagine the kind of "comments" from Dutch-bag if Emery was yanked and benched this early in the season.

Flyers are playing well, especially the youngins. REIMS is a point machine, Giroux sick as usual.

Good win Flyers. Tough game featuring two teams that were decimated by the flu, but it was still a really tight, fun game to watch.
@28, So I've come to the conclusion that Dutch is missing a chromosome or two. First it was about Mike Smith not being an NHL goalie. Then it was his Nostradamus-esque prediction of Buffalo beating the Flyers 5-2 on Friday. Now he's resorted to questioning gio and G-man's sexuality? I'm hoping you're a little kid (most likely a 12 year old girl) because it's rather sad if you have to resort to that for a comeback. In addition to that, why are you even on a Flyers/Blues recap page if you're not a fan of either team? I know crapsburgh is boring and there is not anything good in that whole city, but you have to have more of a life then that. So did you enjoy that 5-2 loss to LA after being up 2-1 in the third on Thursday? Or how about that 5-0 loss to San Jose where they beat the Pens for the seventh time at HP-Pavillion Center with Fluery being benched, Kris Letang leaving, and Sidney Crosby being held pointless for his fourth consecutive game?

@27 Dumbdumb, At least I know that San Jose's team is the Sharks. Nice of your boyfriend G-Man to correct you. Wonder if that "G" stands for a certain 3 letter word starting with g and associated with rainbows. G-Man you do seem obsessed with chimps, find that odd. But oh well. Keep up with the excuses flyers fans, The refs, the league the blah blah blah, I plan to continue my "Seven-T-Five" chant for years to come.

"Why? Carcillo did dive. Tkachuck made a terrible hit but Carcillo almost won an emmy. Backes gets 2minutes for trying to help a guy from falling into the board awkwardly. He hits him, sees him going in badly, tries to help him, an dgets a holding call."

Wow, honestly one of the stupidest things I have ever read, and that is saying a lot since Dutch-bag is a regular bandwagon poster that often makes little to no sense.

What a bunch of Philly whiners. You won the game. The refs were terrible last night but it wasn't just against you. Philly never should have been on the power play when they scored. A scirmish behind the net, Pronger throws 3 punches to Eller's face, a bunch of grabbing and face washes, and Janssen comes out of that with a penalty? Why? Carcillo did dive. Tkachuck made a terrible hit but Carcillo almost won an emmy. Backes gets 2minutes for trying to help a guy from falling into the board awkwardly. He hits him, sees him going in badly, tries to help him, an dgets a holding call. The calls went both ways bt I think Philly got the better end of it. Quit your friggin' whining.

Thanks for the correction, you are right. Don't know why I had Ducks on the brain, even after reading the article. I shouldn't type until I am fully awake.

Just to answer the question of why the whistle wasn't blown when an injured player was down, they don't blow the whistle until one of the injured players team controls the puck. As long as the opposing team controls the puck, play continues. Before someone goes overboard and says, "So if a guy is dying on the ice....", I would imagine if the injury were life threatening they would stop play immediately.

You Phillies fans need to settle down. The refs were horrible on each team so you can't say s*** bout that. And that play that was never reviewed showed the puck on top of mason's leg pad and never went across the line. Even if it did it would of only been because a Phillies player charged mason into the net.

How 'bout that Giroux in the shoot-out???. Another stellar move for this kid. It seems like he's "snakebit" in games, in that he gets great chances but they're not going in the net for him. Once he gets going............LOOK OUT...... Hopefully JVR's finger isn't to badly broken. Tollefsen won't be missed. Speaking of not being missed, Briere and Gagne. The Flyers aren't missing these guys right now. I see that as a good thing. More offense comes back when these guys return. We're winning games without them, but Briere should be ready next Saturday. He was starting to get hot when he went down. I hope that continues when he returns...........Let's Go FLYERS ! ! ! !

It's the same old-same old with the refs. They make calls based on the players "History" rather than the play itself.
Remember last year when Jones hit Bergeron? After that incident, all the Refs had the Flyers pegged and called every little "infraction". Nothing new.
I'm really wondering what will happen now. Most of the "Good" Refs are retiring and we'll be stuck with Refs with little experience. If they were only consistant with their calls.
That's the way of the NHL.

Great effort on the back to back for the Flyers! Wtf with the refs though? Carcillo's "dive"? Even the commentators said it was a BS call and the guy should have been suspended on the hit, but because it was Carcillo it's ok? This game never should have gone to OT since the overhead replay showed a goal for Philly, but upstairs never called for a review? Whatever. We will prevail despite their every effort to keep us down. @#$%k you refs and LET'S GO FLYERS!!!!

Actually rather starting to hope the flyers continue playing well, the disappointment amongst the "Why Not Us" Thugs is all the more enjoyable in mid-late April when expectations are raised. Theo that doesn't sound crazy, its actually very accurate.

why don't the refs ever blow the whistle while one of our guys are down? i know, usually it ends up leadin to the other team scorin on us, duh. and i don't really think that was a Carcillo diving as much as it was gettin hit the way he did. but i could be wrong.

and how bout that move Giroux made!!! spun Mason's mask around like Daffy Duck after being shot in the face.

And don't even try and say the only reason they scored was because the Phillies player was hurt. He wasn't even down for 10 seconds. That was just a good goal by Oshie.
