Bruins’ PP and goal scoring return.

BOSTON (AP)—Marco Sturm’s(notes) reaction after his first goal in over a month showed what the goal-starved Boston Bruins had been going through.

Mark Recchi(notes) and Zdeno Chara(notes) scored first-period power-play goals as the Bruins halted a rough stretch with a 4-2 win over Buffalo on Saturday night, sending the Sabres to their first consecutive losses of the season.

“A lot of guys were do,” said Sturm, who yelled and pumped his first more enthusiastically than usual when he scored late in the second period. “A lot of relief. As a forward you never want to go through that. Hopefully I can relax a little now.”

Chara scored his first of the season, Sturm had his first since the second game of the year and Byron Bitz(notes) tallied first since early October.

“Nice to celebrate,” Sturm said, still smiling. “It’s been a while.”

The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Bruins, who had scored just once in their previous three games—that coming with 52 seconds remaining in regulation of a 2-1 shootout loss to Montreal in its last game on Thursday.

“That’s what we’ve been telling them—to relax,” Boston coach Claude Julien said. “Eventually you’re going to score goals. You know if you stick with it, it’s going to turn.”

Boston also snapped an 0-for-20 run on the power play.

Derek Roy(notes) and Jason Pominville(notes) had the Sabres’ goals. Buffalo was 0 for 7 on the power play.

“The greater issue is our game has lacked energy the last three games,” Buffalo coach Lindy Ruff said. “I think the old me might have gone irate and done something a little bit stranger. We’ve dealt with some sickness. We’re going to back off. We’re going to get the guys some rest.”

Tuukka Rask(notes) stopped 28 shots for Boston. Buffalo rookie netminder Jhonas Enroth(notes), recalled from Portland of the AHL on Wednesday, made 33 saves in his NHL debut.

The Bruins made it 1-0 just 3:17 into the game when Recchi tipped Derek Morris’(notes) shot from the point past Enroth during their initial man-advantage opportunity.

Boston, which entered the night with the NHL’s worst ranked power play, made it 2-0 on Chara’s first goal of the season at 16:31.

Chara, the 2009 Norris Trophy winner, looked to the ceiling and raised both arms, possibly showing a bit of relief over his tough start. He scored a career-high 19 last season.

“There’s no doubt it was probably a big sigh of relief for him and hopefully it gets him going in the right direction,” Julien said.

Facing a rookie goaltender and a team playing on consecutive nights appeared like the perfect recipe for the Bruins, who made it 3-0 on Bitz’s goal 1:22 into the middle period. Center Steve Begin(notes) collected defenseman Steve Montador’s(notes) errant pass in the slot and fed Bitz in front.

“I wasn’t that nervous,” Enroth said. “I felt pretty confident before the game and I just wanted to go out there and enjoy the moment.”

The Sabres cut it to 3-1 when Roy batted a bouncing puck by Rask from the slot, but Sturm one-timed a shot from the left circle that caromed into the net off the far post, making it 4-1 late in the second.

Boston had scored just four goals in its previous five games.

Former Sabre Daniel Paille(notes), acquired from Buffalo on Oct. 20, was stopped on clean breakaway by Enroth’s right-pad stop midway into the opening period. Bergeron flubbed a bid going in alone midway into the third.

NOTES: Rask made his first start since shutting out Edmonton 2-0 on Oct 31. … Buffalo had a pair of players reach milestones: C Tim Connolly(notes) played his 500th career game and D Henrik Tallinder(notes) played his 400th. … It was the Sabres’ third game in four nights. They lost 5-2 at home against Philadelphia on Friday. … Buffalo pulled its goalie and had the net empty for most of the final 1:40.

He probably did use spell check. "Do" is spelled correctly. He probably doesn't have grammar check though. That's when good, old-fashioned proofreading comes in handy.

Anyway, good to see the Bruins getting back on top of their game after that three game slump. It's still way early in the season. Lots of time to bounce back once Lucic and Savard return to the lineup in December. Until then, we've got 10 more games this month -- five of those games will be against fairly decent teams. Ironically, four of those teams have gone 2-3 over the last five games. Only New Jersey has gone 5-0.

Of the other five not-so-good teams, three of them have gone 3-2 out of their last 5.

Prediction? Bruins go 6-2-2 over the next ten games.

Buffalo beat up on cellar dwellers in their first 10 games now they have lost two in a row to Philly and Boston two teams that will be there in the playoffs. Looks like the same old Sabres....mediocrity because of Regier, Quinn, Ruff and owner Tom CHEAPisano

The thread for all of the game recaps are the same for the previews too; i.e. comments from the preview show up in the recap.

The Bruins have been outplaying their opponents for several games now, but have not always being rewarded with victories. Tonight was different.

    Bruins Powerplay ............................. Check (2/3)
Bruins Penalty Kill ............................ Check (6/7)
Bruins Winning Fights ...................... Check (3/3)
    Chara being dominant ...................... Check
Recchi looking like he belongs ......... Check

And Julien can put that little boy from Maine (for the shootout) on hold. Bruins!!!!

My Buffalo Sabres are starting to sh|t the bed.

Quinn and Regier's dismantling of that 05-06 Stanley Cup contender team is one of the most depressing acts of beancountery I have ever seen in hockey. They should both be thrown off the Peace Bridge.

You would think someone would proofread these articles.

Its Enroth vs. Rask if anyone is interested, not Miller vs. Thomas.

Pretty far off if you ask me.

Lalime is out with an injury. If Miller doesn't play then Encoff, or something like that, will start his 1st NHL game.

@daviebecker - I echo your thoughts. If B's were actually putting the puck in the net, he wouldn't be considered on a downslide... ahh gotta love the media. Go Bruins.

I feel bad for Tim Thomas, he's playing well and the team can't score any goals. Sad...

Hey Claude Julien, should this game go to a shootout, please do not use Mark Recchi as the go-to guy in the shootout like you did in the Montreal game. Use Michael Ryder, Marco Sturm, or even that 9 year old little boy (Oliver Wahlstrom) from the great state of Maine instead.
Oh, and Tuukka Rask will probably be the goalie for the Bruins tonight. Go Bruins!!!!

Lalime is still out with a groin injury, so it's probably gonna be Miller in goal for the Sabres tonight. Enroth was pulled up from the AHL as the another option.
