Richards, Carter score two each for Flyers in win

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Playing without Simon Gagne(notes) and Danny Briere(notes), the Flyers didn’t back down. Instead, they became aggressive.

Mike Richards(notes) and Jeff Carter(notes) scored two goals apiece and rookie David Laliberte(notes) and Scott Hartnell(notes) also tallied, leading Philadelphia to a 6-2 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Monday night.

The Flyers’ excitement over their victory was offset by the news that Gagne will miss six to eight weeks. He’s scheduled to have hernia and hip surgery on Tuesday. Briere has also missed the past two games with an injured groin.

“There’s always concern when they go out,” Flyers head coach John Stevens said. “But this is short term. Gagne and Briere are always welcome in your lineup because they’re going to score all year long consistently, but it’s great to see Laliberte and van Riemsdyk and these guys take advantage of the extra ice time and use it as an opportunity.”

Without two of their better offensive players, the Flyers peppered Lightning goalie Antero Niittymaki(notes), scoring two goals in the first period, three in the second and one in the third. Carter and Arron Asham(notes) played despite having the flu.

Contributions will just have to come from other players.

“They’re obviously big shoes to fill,” Richards said. “We stepped it up as a team and everyone contributed.”

The Flyers (7-4-1) have scored 12 goals in the past two games, and won for the fourth time in the past six. Goalie Ray Emery(notes) stopped 26 shots.

Despite leading the team in goals this season, Richards had gone six games without scoring. His first goal came off a feed from Chris Pronger(notes), who corralled a bouncing puck. Hartnell assisted on Richards’ second score. Carter had gone seven games without scoring.

“We were getting chances. We just weren’t scoring,” Richards said. “We have an emphasis on getting to the net and finishing plays off.”

Laliberte, recalled from the AHL Philadelphia Phantoms last week to replace Gagne, become the first Flyer to score in his first two NHL games since Eric Lindros(notes) on Oct. 6 and 9, 1992. He’s the fifth to do that in Flyers franchise history.

James van Riemsdyk(notes) contributed with three assists for the first three-point night of his career—and leads all NHL rookies in scoring.

Steven Stamkos(notes) and James Halpern scored for Tampa Bay. Stamkos scored the first goal for Tampa Bay (4-4-4), capitalizing on a Danny Syvret(notes) turnover. Halpern’s came late in the third period.

“It’s just tough to get anything positive out of it,” Lightning head coach Rick Tocchet said. “I honestly can’t think of who played good. Usually you have a couple of individuals, but they were very light on their sticks and the Flyers were very strong. We looked really weak out there tonight. It was a little alarming.”

The Lightning have lost three of four, and have started this season 0-5 on the road. The rough stretch prompted a closed-door meeting after the game.

“It stays in the room,” Halpern said. “You saw the game tonight, so you can imagine what it was about. I’m not saying that we’re letting this slide, but I think the guys in this room are more than capable of handling it.”

NOTES: The Flyers have scored the first goal in 10 of their past 12 games. … Pronger has recorded at least one point in eight straight games. … Carter has played in 225 straight regular-season games. … Four Flyers recorded three-point nights Monday: Carter, Richards, Hartnell and van Riemsdyk.

It's no that "we're back", it's more like we're beating mediocre teams the way we should be. Carolina and Tampa Bay have been struggling and with the talent the Flyers have, they won those two games as lopsided as they should have. It's a start in the right direction. We'll see if it continues on Friday against the Sabres...............Let's Go FLYERS ! ! ! !

    More brilliance from the Dutch-Bag......................

@Dutch- Yeah, you got by BIron last year. YOUR POINT??? I bet you were very proud of your Pens when they beat Marty and he SUCKS.

The Flyers are a very good team. It won't kill you to admit it. They see your Pens the last two years in the finals, yet you think they suck? So the Pens have been slightly better than "suck"??

HEY YOU MAY HAVE A POINT, DOUCHE.

@9 Dustin X. Who cares, what's to say? philly beat another mediocre team that felt compelled to start their backup goalie vs. the flyers. .

I am already hearing flyers fans basically saying "We're back" after only beating two teams that have bad records. Until we dominate the top teams in the league shouldn't be saying anything.

have you noticed when you bring up young talent and mix with the veterans were lookin fresher and skating better . i like what i have seen in the last two games say what you want any given night a team can beat you . you got to play the game . flyers are doing fine . but let me say we have got to find out either what we got in briere i think a bust hes not the same player he was . theres a drop off . injuries i dont know but i do know this he hurts us more than helps why hes not in the line up . when hes there is he burn the scoreboard up he should hes getting a ton of money . gagne , this is a tough one hes a great player but like briere hes on the downside of his playing . so what do we do with this guys . were doing fine need to commit to getting players in that arent injury prone and are young and hungry . what you going to do when the orange and black attack run wild on you .flyers are beast

i am a die hard Flyer's fan and the way they have been playing lately has certainly made me feel better. Smith did start the first and the second period, that is why he was saddled with the loss, because he had the first two periods. Who's to say that the Flyer's can't beat good teams? Tampa had some talented guys as did the Hurricane (Did everyone forget that the canes played great last year?) i don't know what is going on with them this year, thankfully it doesn't matter too much to me as i am a Flyer's fan. LETS GO FLYERS! As far as trading Danny, I say NO WAY..and Gagne will continue to improve.

Bottom line that Flyer's are an offensive weapon that when they are going on all cylinders they are nearly impossible to defend against. Any true fan knows that! Bring on anyone!

lets get real here. when we play a team who ever is in goal . we still got to score , granted what ever smith is . hes an nhl goaltender, . but he dont score the goals unless hes ron hextall . the only reason they didnt start nittimakki is the flyers know how to beat this guy . ummm they played on the same team for what several years . if he would have started . would the score been that much different . its a big win . they the lighting got a very strong team . st louis . vinny , and rookiee that was on fire last year . there very capable to beat you . again back up or no back up its not flyers choice . but any way the out come flyers win and win big . flyers keep up this streak . .were on the move.lets go flyers

Yep, you are right. I am a flyers fan at heart. Although they are my favorite team, the team still has issues.
