PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Flyers defenseman Braydon Coburn(notes) waited five years for his first two-goal game in the NHL. Then he took care of the feat in 1 1/2 minutes.
Coburn scored twice and Scott Hartnell(notes) and Matt Carle(notes) each had a goal and two assists to help Philadelphia snap a two game losing streak and send the Carolina Hurricanes to their eighth straight loss, 6-1 on Saturday.
“I’ve had a lot of close calls so far,” said Coburn, who has played in 227 career NHL games. “You just have to wait for your time.”
David Laliberte(notes), playing in his first NHL game, and James Van Riemsdyk(notes) each had a goal and an assist for the Flyers, unbeaten in their last six regulation games at home against Carolina.
“Actually, I was hoping I’d get a chance for another one,” Coburn said.
Coburn’s goals came within a span of 1:30 midway through the third period, the first with the teams skating 4-on-4, the next on a slap shot.
Brandon Sutter(notes) scored for the Hurricanes (2-7-3), who are off to their worst start since 1997—the franchise’s first season in Carolina—when they were 2-7-2. Carolina is winless on the road (0-5-2). The Hurricanes are on an 0-5-3 skid overall.
Ray Emery(notes), who stopped 28 shots in the Flyers’ season-opening, 2-0 win over Carolina on Oct.2, made 39 saves in the rematch.
Michael Leighton(notes), making his first start for the Hurricanes, stopped 22 shots.
“I felt a little rusty the first part of the game, but I felt good the second half,” Leighton said. “I let up a couple of goals early and I gave up some rebounds that I usually don’t give up.”
Carolina coach Paul Maurice said he thought Leighton needed some game action after Cam Ward(notes) started the first 11 games.
“Leighton’s been looking good in practice,” Maurice said. “He’s played well in this situation before.”
Hartnell put the Flyers ahead with a power-play goal at 8:04 of the first period when he redirected Chris Pronger’s(notes) shot from just inside the blue line.
Laliberte made it 2-0 at 12:30, putting in a rebound after Leighton failed to control Ryan Parent’s(notes) initial shot. Carle earned his 100th NHL point with a wraparound goal at 17:21.
Sutter brought the Hurricanes to within 3-1 with a one-timer at 2:56 of the second, but Van Riemsdyk restored Philadelphia’s three-goal lead 14 seconds later with a backhander from in close.
A total of 25 penalties for 68 minutes were assessed during the physical game.
“Guys are sticking up for each other and that’s a big part of hockey,” Van Riemsdyk said. “We’re coming together as a team, becoming a cohesive unit.”
NOTES: Flyers LW Daniel Briere (groin) was scratched. … Carolina LW Sergei Samsonov(notes), who had an assist, played in his 750th NHL game. … Leighton’s wife, Jennifer, gave birth to a girl on Friday. The baby is their second child.

" certainly think the Flyers would do well to get rid of Briare, but I doubt you'd get much interest in him."
Now, Bob Gainey may be dumb enough to take on his (Briere's) contract, provided he can unload something as well.
Ryan O'Byrne has had a tough time in Montreal (the purse-snatching incident, scoring on his own goal, getting beat badly on inside-out moves). O'Byrne is slated to earn 1.4 milion next season. Roman Hamrlik is 35 and making 5.5 million this year and next. Unfortunately, with Markov out, I'm not sure Montreal will unload d-men even if they are underachieving (O'Byrne) or overpaid (Hamrlik).
Obviously, another problem in Montreal are the Kostitsyn brohers. Sergei is MIA and Andrei's cap hit is 3.250/year (half of Briere's hit) until 2011. Briere's hit runs through until 2014! Briere is an undersized, overpaid, French-Canadian...that combo is HIGHLY valued in the Canadiens organization. Andrei Kostitsyn could, and that's a BIG could of course, blossom in another environment. If I'm Holmgren, I'd be calling Gainey as soon as one of their top six forwards go on LTIR.

The reason is obvious and unfortunate and I won't bother explaining it because anyone who watches hockey and especially the Flyers already knows the reason.
I agree that Cote is a waste of money and space and Carcillo is a penalty waiting to happen. Asham, on the other hand, does a lot of good for the team. He scores a goal here and there, throws a good hit and can and will drop the gloves when called on (not every 10 seconds and for no reason, like the other 2).
I certainly think the Flyers would do well to get rid of Briare, but I doubt you'd get much interest in him.
Sorry to see Randy Jones go on waivers, I still think he will be a good player.
Overall, the biggest problem with this team is still the coaching, or lack of. I don't believe they'll ever win it all with this guy behind the bench.

Is there any reason the Flyers do not pursue Zherdev and/or Shanahan?
Why do we have players like Carcillo - Asham - Cote???
Why not build the best available team with hockey player - not mediocre talented goons?
Now with Gagne & Briere hurt - no Knuble or Lupul or Upshall - the Flyers are going to have to rely on players like Asham, Carcillo, and Cote - whose best contributuion to the team has nothing to do with the new NHL and a wide open offense.
Nice going - is Booby Clarke back in the house??? Because this smells like his crappy managing all over again!
