Oilers beat Red Wings in shootout

Preview | Box Score | Recap

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP)—Patrick O’Sullivan(notes) gave the Edmonton Oilers a full two points in the standings with one accurate shot.

O’Sullivan beat Jimmy Howard(notes) with a wrist shot in the third round of a shootout, and Nikolai Khabibulin(notes) stopped Henrik Zetterberg(notes) on Detroit’s final attempt to give the Oilers a 6-5 victory Thursday night.

The Red Wings overcame a 5-1 deficit to force overtime.

Zetterberg started the rally midway through the second period, and Jonathan Ericsson(notes), Todd Bertuzzi(notes) and Patrick Eaves(notes) had third-period goals. Darren Helm(notes) also scored for the Red Wings.

“We had a bunch of goals to start, but unfortunately we didn’t continue to play the same way we got those goals,” Oilers coach Pat Quinn said. “Detroit’s a pretty good team. You can’t let them off the hook. We had some fear take over. They started checking and we didn’t answer it. We got through it tonight, but it wasn’t pretty.”

Ales Hemsky(notes) had two goals and an assist for Edmonton. Linemate Dustin Penner(notes) had a goal—his ninth of the season—and three assists, and slumping Shawn Horcoff(notes) had a goal and two assists. Jean-Francois Jacques(notes) also scored.

“It was nice,” Horcoff said. “Penner and Hemmer having been playing at such a level, it’s been outstanding. I’d been trying to stay positive.”

Edmonton snapped a three-game losing streak to improve to 7-5-1, while Detroit dropped to 4-4-3 with its fourth loss in five games.

“It’s one of those give-and-take situations,” he said. “It’s one of those situations where you can be somewhat happy to battle back the way we did and steal a point, but we still have to be disappointed with not getting the two points.”

Detroit coach Mike Babcock focused primarily on the positives.

“It was very important for our team to battle back the way we did and show that kind of grit and determination,” Babcock said. “As a coach you have to question what they were doing at the start of the game. Overall, we shot ourselves in the foot there. But we challenged our team to respond and they did. It was a real good point from where we began with that terrible start.”

Detroit outshot Edmonton 20-6 in the third period, with Eaves tying it a 5 with 7:07 remaining.

NOTES: Helm’s goal was his first in regular-season play. He has six goals in the playoffs. … Horcoff entered the game with only three points and had been shut out in his last seven games. … The game was the first of four meetings between the two teams this season. Detroit swept the four-game series last season.

@Big Al....You're a disturbed little b*tch, aren't you? First, you give the oh so original advice of "just ignore him"; of course that's AFTER you call me out by name.......That's goofy enough, but THEN you go and ask Don where I'm at??????? Careful sister, sounds like you've developed an enfatuation????? A queer chubby chaser??? PUKE! Try Cathy P(usslicker), he'll work out just fine for you; as long as you don't mind body odor that would make a mortician barf!

@Kurt........Calm down, halfwit.....I simply pointed out that the pink wing homers on here CONTINUALLY downplayed the Samuelsson loss as "insignificant" and that the "kids" would easily pick up the slack. Apparently you ladies don't know sh*t about hockey? I could continue with other observations about the lack of objectivity you homers/homos have concerning your feminine little team; but I'll save them for later.....................

Da Fat Man doesn't hate the Wings, he gets his jollies off by seeing everyone's reaction to his post. Just ignore him and don't respond; he'll go away.

And the Red Wings are still one of the greatest franchises in north american sports everyone. An 18 year playoff streak thats the longest in ANY north american sport, 4 cups in 11 years, and one of the classiest and smartest organizations in the world. Dont forget, there are 71 more games in the wings season. Does everyone think that the avalanche will finish with a 60-14-8 record just because they've started out with 9 wins in 12 games? People, the first few weeks of the season determines absolutely nothing. The wings have basically 2 new lines and are still gelling as a unit. Give it time, and the wings will be back to their winning ways. And da fat man will be back on his computer, trying to insult hockeytown before his mother calls him out of the basement because its dinner time, and da fat mans favorite food is for dinner: bull@#$%.

its funny how all the wings fans and the other dum fans are hating on the wings after 11 games still 71 games to play bozos and the wings can turn it around easily if ozzy can stard being ozzy not ponzy. And if they trade bertuzzi and a few prospects for a goal scorer becuse bertuzzi is a joke also they should trade brad may cause the man is a joke.

Yes, I am a wings fan, but im seriously concerned for you. You think more about how to diss the wings than you do about a good piece of @#$%. Get a @#$% life. And some @#$%. PLEASE!!!!!!

B&G don't be so@#$%y, the first year your Pens were truly beaten down and last year, well the Wings should've won it. But the Pens fought hard and took the cup by the slimmest of margins. It's ten games into the season and if you recall your Pens weren't even in a playoff spot during the first part of the spring. Bylsma is just what that crappy franchise needed. Mike Illitch isn't going to stand for this, someone's gonna being going soon and the team will turn around.

I love all the Wings hate on here, they had a winning team for how many years and because they aren't doing good 10 games into the season, the trolls come out. Why does anyone even respond to people like Da Fat Man? He is just some troll that probably lives with his parents somewhere in Suburbia, gets beat up at school, and comes here to a yahoo forum where he will never see anyone he talks to face to face and talks crap because he is a coward. Even if Detroit does terrible this year, they still have won more and have done more in the modern NHL era than any team you others are cheering for and it kills you. No team can be good forever, that is what the salary cap is for.....so you haters can have a chance at a winning team for once. Oh, and great insult #34, it really hurts that Detroit got to the Stanley Cup Finals 2 years in a row and lost once in a 7 game series. Detroit is an EST team that plays in the West Conference ans still won all those cups. So what did your team do? Make the playoffs? Yeah, really hurts, ouch. Why not start talking about Detroit's economy or unemployment because that makes a difference in hockey too.

Wings clipper. Oilers beat injuries depleted Red Wings. They don't win that many road games any more. At least not this year. Cup contenderz? I don't think so! Osgood is getting old. Pretty soon Lidstrom has retire. He's getting old too. I'll Osgood two more years and after 2 years he must retire. Babcock will be fired in a year or 2. That's is my prediction. They end their cycle of success. They are not an elite team, not this year. I am a King fan. Detroit always have our numbers, but not this year. Kings will make it to the playoffs. Mark my words. They lost a tough game last night. Back-to-bakck games. They got the same scores on both. They lost 2-1 in the shootout to San Jose on Wed. night and 2-1 shoutout lost to Vancouver on Thu. night. They are still on top of the Pacific Division. I can't wait until the Red Wings come to town. Go Kings!
