Crosby’s hat trick leads Pens past Habs

Preview | Box Score | Recap

PITTSBURGH (AP)—Superstitious Sindey Crosby didn’t want to jinx his shot at a hat trick after his first two goals. Perhaps for the same reason, he isn’t willing to acknowledge he’s morphing into a top pure goal-scorer.

Crosby had his third career hat trick and the Pittsburgh Penguins became the first NHL team to reach 10 victories this season, snapping the Montreal Canadiens’ four-game winning streak with a 6-1 victory Wednesday night. A few hours later, Colorado also reached 10 wins, beating Calgary 3-2 to improve to 10-1-2.

Crosby, tied for fifth in the NHL with nine goals, had his third multiple-goal game in 12 starts this season for Pittsburgh (10-2-0).

“When you get three goals in a game, that kind of changes the look of your (season) numbers early on,” said Crosby, who has 36 goals in his past 55 games (including the playoffs). “I’m trying to shoot the puck when I get chances and trying to not pass up good shots, but it’s just been a matter of the puck going in early on.”

Chris Kunitz(notes) also scored and assisted on all three of Crosby’s goals. Mike Rupp and Alex Goligoski(notes) added goals, and Bill Guerin(notes) had three assists.

Marc-Andre Fleury(notes) made 23 saves, allowing only Tomas Plekanec’s(notes) power-play goal.

With the victory, the defending Stanley Cup champions rebounded from a loss to New Jersey on Saturday night that snapped their seven-game winning streak.

Montreal’s Jaroslav Halak(notes) stopped 19 of 23 shots before he was pulled after the second period.

Crosby extended his point streak to five games, completing a hat trick during the first 36 minutes, giving him nine goals in October for the first time in his career. Last season, Crosby’s ninth goal came a full month later on Nov. 28.

Crosby has averaged roughly twice as many assists as goals over the course of his career but is on a pace for 62 this season.

“He can score,” said linemate Guerin, who has 411 career goals. “He usually has a pass-first mentality, but with the positions that he put himself in during the game, he can score a lot of goals.”

Crosby’s third hat trick came three years to the day after his first, and all three of his goals Wednesday came at even strength. He scored 8:33 into the contest when he one-timed a slap shot off a pass from Guerin between the glove and left pad of Halak, who was diving to his left.

“We made mistakes,” said Montreal defenseman Hal Gill(notes), who won the Cup with the Penguins in June. “We had some turnovers and (Crosby) feeds off that. He waits for it and that’s when he capitalizes.”

Crosby made it 2-0 5 minutes into the second when he corralled the rebound of Kunitz’s shot while in the slot and, with his back to the net, flipped a backhander high into the corner of the net.

“If you give him a chance, he’s going to score,” Halak said.

The goal that brought the deluge of hats onto the ice came with 4:27 left in the second when Kunitz fed him all alone in front of Halak, who stopped his initial shot but the rebound ricocheted off Crosby’s skate.

The play was reviewed but officials ruled he did not use a distinct kicking motion so the goal stood, giving the Penguins a 4-0 lead and Crosby his first three-goal game since Nov. 29, 2008.

“I felt good. I felt like I was getting chances, but I try to not to think about (hat tricks) too much,” Crosby said. “You don’t want to jinx it or think about it. I just wanted to make sure I kept generating chances. When Billy and Kuny are fore-checking like they were, creating loose pucks and stealing pucks, I just try to get ready for those opportunities.”

Rupp’s third goal came 12:58 into the second, and Plekanec scored his third 5:39 into the third during a 5-on-3 situation, ruining Fleury’s shot at his first shutout of the season.

Kunitz had a power play goal with 3:29 left—his second goal in his past 42 games (including playoffs).

“If you get points, it makes you feel good,” Kunitz said, “but the other aspects of my game—going in and being the first on the puck and trying to do all the small things I pride myself in… I’m not going to go up and score 40 or 50 (in a season), but if I get some breaks, hopefully this is the start of some good things.”

NOTES: Halak, purportedly Carey Price’s(notes) backup, started his fifth straight game. … Guerin has 820 points, seventh among U.S.-born players. … Goligoski has a six-game points streak. … Plekanec has at least a point in four straight. … Penguins RW Tyler Kennedy(notes) missed the game due to an undisclosed injury. … Including playoffs, Mellon Arena was sold out for the 125th consecutive game, dating to late in the 2006-07 season.

Nay-sayers can say whatever they want about Sid. He has great skills and is a sharpshooter. Let's not forget he isn't selfish. (unlike someone with the initials AO). Go Pens!

I can deal with the Crosby bashing, etc. (by the way guys, it's really, really old) But uh... Nwaf A... you're a @#$% moron. The Penguins suck? Best record in the NHL and reigning Stanley Cup Champions.
And Kunitz fighting Brashear? Do you even know wtf you're talking about? Do you know how fighting goes in the NHL? I think you should probably take up watching basketball, you're not cut out to be a hockey fan. I dislike Ovechkin, but it doesn't mean I think he sucks and go spouting all this bull@#$%. You should try to have a little respect for the game and its players.

The Avs won their 10th game last night as well. The only reason the Pens were "the first team" to get to 10 wins is because the Avs played a later game. But, it's always all about the Penguins, so I don't know why this story surprises me. WAY TO GO, AVS!!!!!!!

Let's see... Gold for Canada---Junior World Championships
    Art Rass Trophy--Youngest ever
    Hart Trophy--youngest ever
    Stanley Cup--youngest captain ever..

One other thing MORON...In fact calling you a moron is giving you too much credit..you are NOT that smart.

On a poll taken by NHL GMs, 97% say they would build their team around Crosby. I thing they know more about Hockey than a jealous, moron, who speaks like one with an IQ of -3. Yes, that is a negative sign...Are you smart enough to understand the minus sign?

It is still October. Let us not forget Montreal from just last season. Being a life long Penguin fan can remember that the best record in the regular season does not translate to Cup success, like the 1993 team.

Sid had a good game yesterday, but he will still always have more assists than goals, that's just how he is.

Not sure why people are still up to calling Crosby a whiner and a diver. I haven't been able to see too many games this year, but I haven't seen Crosby drawing penalties for diving. It seems that if he is drawing a penalty its because hes too quick and gets slashed or hooked. I think everyone needs to appreciate how good he is and stop with the 4 year old name calling.

Crosby did alright I guess, 3 goals on 9 shots. If that was Ovechkin you pens fans would be crying puckhog but if crysby does it then its an automatic call for a cup in October. Learn the game, I am not hating on crosby he got 9 shots because the Habs couldn't stop him, and Ovechkin gets 9+ shots because nobody can stop him.

You know, I thought the Pens homers were delusional when they started their talks of a "dynasty" after only 2 cup finals and 1 cup. But you have to admit, these guys are on another level right now. They have the look that dynasties have had, that aura of invincibility and supreme confidence. I know there's plenty of hockey yet to play but they look to be the real deal. Of course, that means they're probably jinxed, sorry Pens fans!

@nwaf... can you post the games you have seen and at what times you have seen crosby dive or have you just heard that from a friend who heard it from a friend and then heard that from another friend. If you have truly seen the games you will notice the beating crosby takes along the boards and comes out with the puck 90% of the time.

@beer...if you think crosby sucks cause he is not up by the leaders in hits then you have just proved how sad and pathetic you are.

Crosby has a long, long way to go before you guys can start comparing him to "The Great One". As far as a 70 win season, it a little too early to make that prediction. So put down the pipe! A couple of key injuries and down the standings the Pens will fall. The Pens are off to a great start but if history shows us anything, a great start doesn't garauntee a dance with Lord Stanley.

@ 61 Yeah well too bad we've all seen what teams do that start hot early. Check last years sharks. The fact of the matter is, 12 games in there is no way to predict they are on a 70 win pace. I HATE when sports analyists or idiots like you make those ignorant "on pace for" comments. The stanley cup isn't awarded in October and we haven't even seen what potential teams have this year, sit back and enjoy hockey and stop being such a homer.
