MacArthur, Kennedy score early in Sabres’ win

Preview | Box Score | Recap

NEWARK, N.J. (AP)—The New Jersey Devils didn’t show up for the first period and that’s all the Buffalo Sabres needed to remain unbeaten on the road.

Clarke MacArthur(notes) and rookie Tim Kennedy(notes) scored in the opening 6 minutes and the Sabres completed a sweep of a three-game road trip and won for the fourth time overall away from home, beating the Devils 4-1 on Wednesday night.

“I thought we owned most of the first period and they did a nicer job in the second,” Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said. “In the third period, we traded opportunities and we took advantage of the good ones we got.”

Paul Gaustad(notes) and Jason Pominville(notes) iced the game with goals in the final period and Ryan Miller(notes) was outstanding in making 31 saves as Buffalo won for the seventh time (7-1-1) in nine games.

“We’re happy,” Miller said. “I don’t want to give people the impression we are not happy. We’re managing our expectations a little better. We know it’s going to be a steady improvement by every team. With this team, we also have to improve and show we can bring the work ethic every night. The good start shows the guys care and want to play. That will be the key to the season.”

Defenseman Andy Greene(notes) scored on a power play for New Jersey, which had a three-game winning streak snapped in losing for the fourth time in five home games.

“Obviously, they came out strong, more prepared, they way we should’ve been,” said Devils defenseman Johnny Oduya(notes), who was on the ice for the Sabres’ first two goals.

New Jersey coach Jacques Lemaire that the staff told the team that the Sabres would come out strong and forecheck. They Devils didn’t handle the puck well in their own end and it cost them.

“In the second period we started to play,” Lemaire said.

MacArthur needed only 81 seconds to give Buffalo the lead, stuffing in the rebound of Craig Rivet’s(notes) slap shot for his fifth goal.

“I think we caught them on their heels with a couple of key players out tonight,” Ruff said of Devils’ defenseman Paul Martin(notes) and left wing Jay Pandolfo(notes). “We didn’t give them much time to get organized and it seemed they missed Martin on defense.”

Kennedy got his first NHL goal at the 6-minute mark. Jochen Hecht(notes) got control of a floating puck behind the Devils’ net, nudged it to Kennedy. He skated out from behind the goal to the right circle and then turned and shot, catching Brodeur off guard, with the puck sliding between his wide-open pads.

“He is one of the best, if not the best all time, he is right up there and for me to score on him for my first that’s just really special,” Kennedy said. “He’ll stop me a lot more than I’ll ever score on him, so to get that first one is nice.”

After being outshot 14-7 in the first period, the Devils picked up their game and got on the board with Gaustad off for hooking. Greene beat Miller with a shot from the right circle after a Zach Parise(notes) pass failed to connect in front and went right to him for his first goal of the season.

This marked the Devils’ first game without Martin (broken left arm) and Pandolfo (shoulder). Both were hurt Saturday in Pittsburgh and are expected to be sidelined at least four weeks.

Sabres rookie defenseman Tyler Myers(notes) played his ninth NHL game on Wednesday. Under NHL rules, the 19-year-old’s three-year rookie contract kicks in if he plays his 10th game, making Myers eligible to test free agency a year earlier than most players in his draft class. The other option would be to send Myers back to junior hockey, but the 6-foot-8 first-round pick is playing so well it might be hard for Buffalo to do that.

“We’re going to look at it,” Ruff said. “That’s something we’re going to talk about.

NOTES: Devils LW Andrew Peters(notes) was scratched and didn’t get a chance to play against his old team. … D Cory Murphy(notes), who was recalled from Lowell after Martin’s injury, was scratched. … Sabres D Toni Lydman(notes) did not dress for the second straight game.

Look out everybody Sabres are for real this year. Devils win Stanley Cup this year. Haha that's funny. They end their cycle of success. Brodeur isn't the same. He is getting old and his team is getting old. Lost in 2nd round of playoffs 2 times, new coach, and new players in the past 5 years. Rebuilding mode? I thought they are among elite teams in the league. Like Detroit! Go Kings!

Hope they can keep it up, Buffalo needs all the winning they can get from this team to make up for the team that plays in Orchard Park. I won't even mention them by name, they don't deserve it.

What's with Parise as 3rd star?? A -1 player with 1 Assist gets to be 3rd star, opposed to a 2 A guy who was 2 (Montador) or a guy who gets 1G and 1A (Pomminville)?

    Craziness.

Buffalo did come out of the gate strong last year as well however, this year they look so much more energized and they are fighting so much harder for the puck as if they expect to win every game. Last year alot of times they looked flat and didn't seem as if they thought they could win. Miller is top 3 goalie and he doesn't get recognized because of the teams performance the past 2 seasons, I mean look at the D the guy has in front of him I'm a Sabres fan but their not exactly the most dynamic Defense in the league. I think they stay strong and even though they might not win the divison I expect to see them in the playoffs.

How come posts number 8 and 9 aren't showing up?

Anyways, number 6, you're an idiot. How are the Sabres bottom feeders? Are you even watching the same sport?

Number 7, you too are an idiot. Low scoring? What do you call the games we've been winning 6 to 3 or 5 to 2, or tonights win 4 to 1?

As a Sabre fan I am much happier with WINS than "love" in the Yahoo! NHL Preview. Be careful what you wish for. Sabres will start to get noticed and then - puff! Out goes the air from the balloon.

Recently an article came out declaring that the Sabres were the only NFL team without a loss in regulation. What happened? They lost that very night to Atlanta at home.

The happiest team in the NFL with their media coverage? The NE Patriots! They are flying under the radar and loving it, just like the Sabres.

    So backoff Sabre whiners!

When Andy Greene is your best player on defense AND offense you know there is a serious problem. Let's face it, Pelley, Pikkarainen, Halischuck aren't keeping many goalies awake at night. Rolston and Zubrus are two mistakes the Devils refuse to admit they made. They are a waste of both uniform and cap space. And now they are without two of their core defensive players in Martin and Pandolfo. Fortunately their high powered defense has picked up the slack with a grand total of 2 goals in ten games! About all they can hope for is for the circus to come to town for about three or four months so they have to play all their games on the road. Buffalo came to play tonight from the opening faceoff. That was the difference.

Buffalo fans, be more concerned about your teams performance than what kind of "Pre-view love" the team is getting. Obviously the Sabres are playing well out of the gates and that is good to see, however after back to back Playoff misses and an insistence on keeping the Buffaslug logo that everyone (including a majority of the fans) hates I can understand the lack of reporting. Buffalo hasn't been helped by playing fewer games than most and winning low scoring affairs. Nice win tonight, I guess the secret to playing the Devils is to play them at home!
