Perron leads Blues past Hurricanes

Preview | Box Score | Recap

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP)—St. Louis Blues coach Andy Murray says there’s no secret to his team’s road success early this season.

“The bottom line is we just haven’t been very good at home,” Murray said Wednesday night after the Blues improved to 3-1-1 on the road with a 5-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes. “All the arenas are all new and all generic. You don’t have a lot of differences. So, to me, there isn’t a real home advantage for a lot of the teams.”

That undoubtedly was the case at the RBC Center, where the Blues came out strong, taking a 3-0 lead and then relying on goalie Chris Mason(notes) to extend Carolina’s winless streak to seven games.

David Perron(notes) had two goals, Yan Stastny(notes) and Jay McClement(notes) scored 16 seconds apart, and Mason made 34 saves.

Perron said the Blues (5-4-1) haven’t done anything special to excel away from St. Louis.

“I think it’s just working harder than the other team,” Perron said. “Even though we got outshot, the two points is what we needed to get. We just have to keep playing like that.”

Stastny and McClement scored consecutively later in the first, marking the fifth time this season the Hurricanes allowed two goals in a less than a minute.

“You can’t break down defensively the way we did,” Carolina coach Paul Maurice said. “We haven’t respected the defensive part of the game.”

Andy McDonald(notes) made it 4-1 with his fourth goal of the season, taking a feed from Keith Tkachuk(notes) and beating Cam Ward(notes), who allowed four goals on 17 shots before Perron scored an empty-netter.

“That goal was a big one, because they were pressing us at the time,” Murray said.

Mason was solid in the net for the Blues, who won despite allowing Carolina eight power-play chances. Both goals, by Joe Corvo(notes) and Scott Walker(notes), came on the power play.

“He’s the main reason we came back last year and made the playoffs,” Perron said about Mason. “He’s gotten off to a great start, and he’s our best player every night. We’ve got to have him like that all year.”

NOTES: St. Louis is scoreless in its last 17 power plays after going 0-for-1 on Wednesday. … St. Louis’ last win at the RBC Center was in January 2003. … Carolina dropped to 0-4-2 this season when allowing the first goal. … The Hurricanes (2-6-3) are 0-4-3 in their last seven games.

The Canes still have Rod Brindamour? That dude was a rookie for the Blues in like 1988. That's pretty awesome. The Blues will come around this year. This is basically a new team when you add in Eric Johnson and Paul Kariya. They were both out most of last year. David Perron is only going to get better. It's an exciting team to watch. They just have work out some kinks. T.J. Yoshi is a BA too.

I went to a Twins-Card game in St. Louis this summer and was waving my 87 pennant in Card's fans faces. They didn't like that. Pujols hit a couple of homeruns. Busch Stadium is a great ballpark. The only thing I didn't like was the $7.75 beers. I ended spending over $100. St Louis zoo is pretty sweet and free too.

Dan G. aren't you a fan of the Wild and the Twins? You're hacking on the Cards and especially the Blues? Yikes. See the Wild are really tearing it up so far this season. Corey, come on what gives? I've actually come to find your ridiculous posts pretty laughable and let's be honest, there really isn't much Canes fan backlash to your posts...lack of fan support that obvious? Honestly surprised the Canes are sucking eggs so badly out of the gates, they're a better team than this but they'd better get their $hit together soon or they're looking at a lottery draft pick.

I think everyone is just still having a pissy fit that a small market team like the Canes can @#$% on Boston and New Jersey after such an amazing season they had last year...

Sounds like Cory's team isn't doing to hot either this year...

I am guessing that Cory is a Red Wing fan or perhaps not a fan of anything but complaining. Not sure why someone would rant every 6 minutes about something that doesn't affect their team.

Dan the Rams had a good run in the early 2000's... the blues have never won a cup but they sell out every home game. The blues had like 3 years of bad teams, but the last 2 seasons they are becoming a decent team again. They have a LOT of young talent. The Cardinals?? How can you put them into that catagory?? St. Louis is one of the most respected baseball towns in America... you went a little too far there bud

Two terrible professional cities going at it in this one:

    Rams and Blues? LOL

    Panthers and Canes? LOL

I wonder if there are cheerleaders at the hockey arena tonight in Raleigh. Man what a joke that is. It's quite probable there are more cheerleaders, ushers, etc at the game then fans.

Give me a break.. anyways I hope I never have to read another worthless post about attendance from 2005/2006.

Loving the racism Cory Mohammed Lidle, but unfortunately Raleigh's population growth over the past 20 years is due to all the northerner's (like myself) moving down here, so um, please shut the @#$% up. Raleigh is the city and not Hickory, NC.

I believe that our fan base is horrible because our population is made up of people who are already fans of large market, winning teams (Red Wings, Bruins, Sabres) and they are only interested in supporting hockey here when their team is in town.

Tough economy, most people are more concerned with keeping their homes rather than listening Rutherford proclaim our offense and defense fit together right after watching us lose to the Islanders and Minnesota.

Apparently because recent tickets sales have dropped crazily, Rutherford and the others thought it would be best to take it out on the fans who have been watching this team since they moved here...

A $20 dollar increase on each ticket and a 33% food/beverage increase is enough to cancel a mini-plan for me anyways.
