Handzus scores in overtime for Kings

Preview | Box Score | Recap

LOS ANGELES (AP)—Michal Handzus(notes) made sure Kings teammate Anze Kopitar’s(notes) first career hat trick wasn’t wasted after a third-period meltdown.

Handzus scored at 55 seconds of overtime, and Kopitar had his first three-goal game in the NHL in the Kings’ 5-4 victory over the Dallas Stars on Thursday night.

After the Stars overcame a 4-1 deficit with three third-period goals, Handzus hammered a shot from the left side of the slot past goalie Alex Auld(notes) to give the Kings their second win in a row over the Stars.

“I stress with every team, if you play with a checking mentality, good things happen,” Kings coach Terry Murray said. “You end up with the puck on your stick at a critical point and it happened that way for (Handzus) tonight.”

Dallas’ James Neal(notes) tied it at 2:46 with his second goal of the game.

“You never want to put yourself in the hole like we did, but it shows the character that we have,” Neal said. “When you come back like that, any little bounce in overtime is going to win it. Tough loss, but it’s a good character comeback for us.”

Dallas scored twice in under 2 minutes to cut the Kings’ lead to a goal. Jamie Benn(notes) scored on a backhander at 6:58, catching goalie Jonathan Quick off guard. Then, Mark Fistric(notes) fired a shot from the blue line that went between Quick’s legs.

“It was a good game, right, then the good old Kings came out in the third with a three-goal lead and starting sitting back, waiting for them to come,” Kopitar said. “We cant play like that.”

Wayne Simmonds(notes) also scored, and Alexander Frolov(notes) had two assists for Los Angeles.

The Kings, tied with Phoenix for the Pacific Division lead, have won three of four home games this season. On Monday night in Dallas, the Kings beat the Stars 4-2 to snap a three-game losing streak.

Los Angeles is 5-1 this season and 44-22-8 overall when Kopitar—the first Slovenian to player in the NHL—scores. He leads the Kings with eight goals this season.

Kopitar opened the scoring with a highlight-reel goal. Receiving the puck on the right side, he shook off defender Stephane Robidas(notes) and skated across the front of the crease with the puck before slipping it past Auld on the far left side.

“That’s a hockey player play,” Murray said. “That’s a powerful play, and it takes a very courageous player to make that kind of strong move. Boy, for a young guy to start playing that and showing that kind of performance, that’s pretty exciting stuff.”

Kopitar added two more in the second period, scoring on a power play and then on a nifty backhander that Auld couldn’t control.

“His scoring is what’s expected, but it’s everything else he’s doing that is taking him to the next level,” Kings winger Dustin Brown(notes) said. “He’s a guy we’ve needed and we can’t ask for much more.”

Frolov proved a valuable part of the offense after sitting out Monday night and being criticized by Murray for a lack of effort.

Frolov responded well, making an impact on the ice. He started quickly with an assist on Simmonds’ goal at 15:37 of the opening period. Frolov broke free down the left side and found Simmonds, who backhanded the puck past Auld to make it 2-0. Frolov also assisted on Kopitar’s third goal, which ricocheted off Auld’s glove.

“He played really well,” Brown said about Frolov. “He’s a pro guy.”

@24 Dropthegloves, I'd hardly call Bryzgalov's 1.14GAA "dismal", I suspect that's a typo. Amazing anyone would be calling a matchup with the Yotes "A big game" at any point of the season, yet here we are. Great to see the Kings picking up deuces were in the past they'd blow leads and end up with a team goose egg or maybe an OTL. Second time the Kings have let a team that was way down come back (SJ 4-0) only to gut it out and get the W. Hope the Kings show up and play well Saturday night, be nice to see a good turnout of Kings fans, Lord knows the Yotes fans aren't showing up in sufficient numbers eventhough their team is playing lights out.

I wonder if anyone even bothered to catch the idiot who wrote this article couldnt even get the score between these two teams on Monday right when the L A Kings won with a score of 4 - 1, not 4 - 2 like his article says... Needs to bone up on some notes and check his scores before he posts them... I was at the game, I know this... and even I went back to check it to make sure i was right before looking like an ass... Something he apparently likes to do considering all the screw ups in his statements, according to many in the comments section.!!!!!

A huge 2 point. At the end of the season those points count. Coyotes vs. Kings Sat. at Jobing.com
Arena at 6:30PM Pacific. Coyotes are off to a great start. They came from behind and beat the mighty Red Wings in OT last night. Bryzgalov GAA is a dismal 1.14. Wow! Go Kings!

A true Kings fan for the last 40 years, we don't get too excited this early in the season. Nice to be in first for at least a day in the season but I'll take them playing good hockey night in and night out and the standings will take care of themselves. It's not Quick's fault if the defense in front of him didn't do their job either. Team game, people. I will take a hard hitting team every game and keep shooting the puck on net. Over a full season, soft goals will go in. We score some soft goals too! That's part of the game. Just sit back and see if they continue to play tough and follow through on their checks. That's a sign of a good team. Go Kings!!!

John same thing with your comment, the game is 3 periods . There is no such thing as locking it up cause the other team can come out and play like they should and get goals just like your team did in the first 2 periods. Teams earn their goals and get their points for the standing s by playing hard and making things happen. Dallas outplayed you in the 3rd and your team earned the 2 points by outplaying us in the OT.

PJG You can same the same statement for Dallas giving such soft goals the first 2 periods. Don't be a hypocrite and act as if you earned the lead in the first 2 periods but yet YOURKINGS gave the lead away and Dallas sisn't earn it. That comment cracks me up and tells me what little knowledge you have of sports.

Critic : just a fact to help on your posting , there are 3 teams tied for first place in the division Dallas, Kings, Phx. Just thought I would help you with facts :). IMO its the first of the season and I don't really get that worked up on being first at this moment. Teams will move up and down alot at the first but it will work itself out to who is the better teams later on in the season. I really don't know what to think of Dallas at this point, as they are so young. They did play 6 games in 9 nights which is now over so maybe that will help them energy wise cause last night they let in some easy goals. As a stars fan I hope they bring it together ....Go Stars!!

I'll say this....I'm a kings fan just being real...How many times are we going to blow a lead in the game? I mean come on. I don't think we are going to get anywhere in playoffs playing like that. The game should have been locked up and put away at the end of the second period. And to allow a goal scored from the blue line....How many other goalies would have stoped that? I think we need to take a look at the goalie coach maybe get a new one in there or replace Quick with someone who can get the job done. NO MORE EXUCESS GUYS..

The Critic doesn't know squat about hockey, and he doesn't know how to spell, either. Go listen to Nick Nickson and don't report to us what the game was all about. Better yet, go root for the Ducks.

the officiating was TERRIBLE last night...I've seen better reffing in peewee. it's like they had a personal vendetta against neal...first the phantom call and then the no-goal call....horrible.

Yeah the Neal phantom penalty was one of the worst I've seen in years. Usually you can look at the replay and say that maybe from the ref's point of view, they saw this or that....but the league should seriously review it. Not to mention the fact that the game started almost getting out of hand largely because of the stupid officiating. It also went from a 2-1 game to a 3-1 game because of a BS call.

Look- you either let them play or you call the obvious infractions. When you're inconsistent and it's a close game, you're going to make it worse. And as the idiot refs from the Wings/Pens Cup Finals a few years ago prove, you make it worse when you do the "make-up" calls. Then EVERYONE hates the officiating.

Wow how many times has Quick given up a 2+ goal lead this year in the 3rd period? its happened at least three times. @ least we won. shouldn't have given Dallas a point. We still got the win. Go Kings!

While Modano isn't as much of a factor anymore, it would sure be nice to have Mo and Lets out there, WITH Ott and Richards. Getting kinda sick of always seeing those guys on the IR. However, with Auld in net, along with Richards and Ott, they should be able to compete with the Kings. Pretty even matchup really.
