C Kyle Wellwood returned to the Canucks lineup Sunday against Colorado, just eight days after breaking his big toe blocking a shot. And while the return of a struggling third-line player with just one assist his first 10 games isn't usually cause for excitement, the Canucks are just happy to get any healthy bodies back up front. That they lost Michael Grabner to a rolled ankle during warm ups, only made Wellwood more important.
"I'm capable of playing," said Wellwood, who was somewhat effective between Rick Rypien and Tanner Glass, who scored his first goal as a Canuck on a 2-on-1 break with Wellwood in the third period of a 3-0 win over the Avalanche. "The only thing is if I have to block a shot again with the foot, it's going to hurt a lot more, but as far as skating, it felt pretty good. Once the game starts, it [pain] is not going to be there because once you get on the ice you don't feel it -- at least that's what I'm hoping. ... I've been skating on my own here while the team was away."
The Canucks were counting on Wellwood for a breakout season after scoring 18 goals last year and losing 15 pounds in the offseason. Now they're just hoping he can stay healthy, especially with Grabner joining an injured list that includes goalie Roberto Luongo (rib fracture) and five other forwards: Daniel Sedin (broken foot), Pavol Demitra (shoulder), Ryan Johnson (concussion), Alexandre Bolduc (shoulder) and Jannik Hansen (hand). |
