LW Tomas Holmstrom, bothered by knee and ankle injuries in the preseason, scored both of his team's goals from his hot spot -- right in front of the goaltender. He backhanded the puck through the pads of Vesa Toskala at 16:28 of the second period to cut Toronto's lead to 2-1 and he whipped in the rebound of a Marian Hossa shot at 9:20 of the third period, on the power play, to cut his club's deficit to 3-2. |

Holmstrom scored twice, but it wasn't enough to hold off Toronto as the Red Wings lost their season opener 3-2 on Thursday night. Advice: Holmstrom spent the offeseason dealing with and recovering from sports hernia surgery, but didn't show much rust in the opener. He looks to build off a 2007-08 campaign in which he scored 20 goals and 20 assists in 59 games as he was limited by injuries to his knee, groin and hamstring. The left wing totaled seven multi-point games last season, most recently providing two goals in a shootout win over Washington on Dec. 17. |
