Sharks Team Report

INSIDE SHOTS

The Sharks figure to get a welcome boost on their post-Thanksgiving road trip as injured players return. No one is more eager to get back in the lineup than Torrey Mitchell(notes), who missed all of last season and the first quarter of this one while rehabilitating from a broken leg.

Mitchell returned from a two-week conditioning assignment earlier in the week, and continued to practice with teammates in anticipation of appearing for the first time in a regular-season game since 2007-08.

“He’s still got some work to do,” coach Todd McLellan told the San Jose Mercury News, “but he’s creeping closer and closer.”

Mitchell played five games for the Sharks’ development team as he continues to work his way back into shape from another problem—tendinitis in his left knee—that has sidelined him the entire season.

Mitchell, 24, missed the entire 2008-09 regular season when he broke his leg in two places during a training camp scrimmage, then hurt himself again while on the conditioning assignment last February. He returned for four playoff games but developed the tendinitis over the summer.

“The thing I don’t want to have to do with Torrey is put him in a situation where he’s not ready to succeed,” McLellan told the paper. “If we do that, he’s susceptible to a real big hit on his confidence as well as physically. We have to know 100 percent that he’s ready mentally and physically to compete.”

Blackhawks 7, Sharks 3:   San Jose surrendered a franchise-record three short-handed goals, and the Sharks lost at home for the first time in 10. Dan Boyle(notes) and Joe Pavelski(notes) scored third-period goals after the hosts were already behind by seven goals. Chicago chased starting goalie Evgeni Nabokov(notes), who lost in regulation for the first time in 12 games.

NOTES, QUOTES

• Art Savage, the first president of the Sharks and a man who played a crucial role in convincing the city of San Jose to upgrade its plans for a sports arena so it could attract an NHL team, died Nov. 21 in Sacramento. He was 58. Savage had been battling lung cancer, but the exact cause of death is unknown. Savage collapsed at his home and died on the way to the hospital.

“It was Art’s progressive thinking that helped bring the Sharks and major league sports to San Jose,” Sharks president and CEO Greg Jamison told the San Jose Mercury News. “His innovative approach as the Sharks’ first president is what allowed the club to thrive from the moment it was conceived. We will miss him greatly and send our best wishes to his family.”

• The Sharks set a franchise record Wednesday night by allowing three short-handed goals. They were the first three goals scored in the game, too, by visiting Chicago.

• The Sharks recalled forwards Benn Ferriero(notes) and Steven Zalewski, and defenseman Joe Callahan(notes) from Worcester of the AHL. Ferriero has played in 20 games with San Jose this season, posting two goals and three assists. He has also played in five games for Worcester, tallying one goal and two assists. Zalewski ranked second in scoring for Worcester. He has played in two games for San Jose, making his NHL debut on Oct. 12 vs. Phoenix. Callahan ranked second in scoring among Worcester defensemen with seven points, along with 12 penalty minutes. Callahan made his NHL debut in 2008-09 appearing in 18 games with the New York Islanders.

Quote To Note:   “When you’re not prepared to play and you’re not alert, not sharp, those things can happen, especially when you’re playing against perhaps the top team in the National Hockey League. You give up three shorties in one night, you’re not winning.”—Coach Todd McLellan.

    @ 96 aka boo-hoo-yawn.

Forbes report. Wow. So financial worth that means BS to me, and most backs up YOUR OPINION that the sharks are a pathetic expansion team. Ok, makes no sense.

I live in San Jose and have been a fan since day 1, so I have real world experience of the franchise and fans. Do you? I doubt it.

And the cubs have history, but having history doesn't excuse not winning a title for that many years.

It won't really matter, as the sharks will win two before the leaf's win another.

Do you believe what Glenn Beck squirts as well?

    booyah,
Is this the report to which you refer?
"30. Toronto Maple Leafs (3-11-6, Previous: 30) – It’s not pretty in Maple Leaf country, where Toronto is almost certain to miss the postseason for a franchise-high fifth straight year. They have to eclipse 50 points this season … don’t they?"
    Have a nice day.

What idiot (booyah!) craps on someone else's team by citing Forbes magazine? You are a Leafs fan. You're not allowed to call anyone a douche bag. Oh... the 1966-67 season ain't gettin' any more recent.

@ # 86 : Do you know what you're talking about? Through the nineties the sharks were an average team at best and the shark tank was full than, though not at capacity like it is now. Sharks fans are TRUE fans, and some of the best in the league. If you watch players, coaches, and commentators talk about the Shark Tank, they usually tell you it's one of the loudest places to play in the league. And new players love it because we stand tall behind our Sharks even when they break in the playoffs.

Go back to your hole before this Shark tears into you.

Marleau had his best season on both sides of the puck last yr. A MCL injury bothered him alot during the playoffs and going against Neidermeyer, Pronger, Beacheuman it would be nice to have both your legs working but they weren't. I dont blame Patty for the playoff failure either.

Doug Wilson is the man for not giving in to the media and hype that surrounded Patty last year. I never blamed Patty for the Playoff losses, it's a team game, you win and lose as a team. Patrick "Hatrick" Marleau is an elite sniper with breakaway speed...my bets on he eclipses the 40 goal mark this year.. as opposing teams will look to shut down Heater and Jumbo, thats when Patty and Ryno will rake in the pts. My 2 cents

i cant wait for Seto and Pavelski to return! Now for sure we know we have depth with the promising play of McGinn, Ortemayer, Vesce

    1st: Heatley, Thornton, Setoguchi

    2nd: Clowe, Pavelski, Marleau

    3rd: Ortemeyer, Malholtra, McGinn

    4th: Shelley, Nicol, Staubitz

    I must say,

“We’ve been very average. We finished the road trip with a key win in Philadelphia. But can I say we’ve been real good? No. We haven’t been real bad, either. We’ve been in between, and we need to get better.”—D Rob Blake

is some major captaining. Bravo Rob Blake. This is what the team has been missing. Playoff failures solved!

Let's not forget to give all the credit to coach for Marleau's turnaround...oh wait...Marleau was awesome last year and seems to just get better and better and is still the only leader I see on this team. Joke Thornton should turn his A in.

The sharks signed an swedish elite league goaltender Henrik Karlsson perhaps they should give him a chance. Look at what Jonas Hiller did to us in the playoffs he completely outplayed nabokov. Henrik is 6'6 and is mobile.

Some of you guys need to visit other blogs. The Sharks' fans aren't the only ones who complain about their teams. It's everyone. At least they show a little more intelligence than Caps fans.....

Sharks have a good team this year, I don't see why the "fans" (I use the term loosely) are freaking already. You guys are kind of spoiled, I'd like to see if you had a team as crappy as Toronto, I guess there would be no "fans" then.

Troy D: First, you need to go back to school and take english again..maybe a typing class as well. Second, "elite goaltenders should not give up 4 goals" So are you implying that Luongo or Brodeur are not elite? I recall both of them giving up 4 goals many times. I think you need to read some hockey 101 or even try playing the game (not on a video game) so you realize how difficult the sport actually is. Third: "Where is Joe" Do you not know anything about the Sharks? Last I checked Joe Thornton had 10 points, which is tied with Heatley, Ovechkin and Backstrom for best in the league. The only thing that I agree with you on is the good move of keeping Marleau. Besides that maybe you should learn hockey before you say something stupid again.

To response #82's message...Ya re illerate enough to not notice that at first period, Nabby allowed TWO goals in....Then he got some smelling salt, arisen to a shine star that he can be...I KNOW Nabby can do this BUT playoffs? Wanna bet? Wanna put $$$$ in your mouth on Nabby's playoffs performance?
Again, I am correct, Patty did all he is all about!!!!!!! Sharks is luckt or smart about not trading him off. We need him! Patty is one of best hockey players.....Heatly started to show that he is fitting in....Where is Joe??? I saw how he played last Thursday...But where was he yesterday?
#62, be careful what ya say, cuz ya'd get puck up in your rear!

Here I am again........Great that Joe, heatly moved up and did some work at Kings game...that's only one game, let's see if they will be consient in every game to come, especially in latter months.......BUT, again Nabby did it, 4 goals in 20 shots?????
Come on thats absurd for a elite goaltender....That should NEVER happen, no matter what defensemen doing or whatever excuses are....If Nabby is elite goaltender, then it should be 1 or 2 goals out of 50 shots!!!!!!!! I think Greise did well, given the fact that he hasnt played a real game for ages....He needs more ice time...
We should look for a real elite goaltender or we will collapse again at playoffs....AGAIN!!!!
    GOOOOOOO PATTY!!!!!!

Wow, I can see what kind of faith Sharks "fans" have. Allready criticizing and it's only the second game in the season. Yea, that first game was horrible, but horrible first games are in Sharks history considering that they've only won 4 away season openers. Anderson has been a good goalie for the Avs too. He shutout the Canucks the next night. Nabby did a poor job in the net, but all of the blame shouldn't be on him. The defense was horrible. They failed to clear bodies away from the net. But that shouldn't matter, game 2 was a better image for the Sharks. They handled the Ducks very well and it's a preview of how they'll play this season. As time goes, the "new" team will get comfortable with each other and only improve.

See????????? From one game, first game of season....Where's Joe? Heatly, who? What did Nabby do with only 20 shots coming in, FIVE got in!!!!!
Come on, we know, Joe is dummier than that wooden peg sitting on his lap......He's a whiner, and if he doesn't have anyone good on his line, would he produce?????? LOOK at Marleau, he played on many different lines, even switched positions....and did well...NEVER whine...He is a truly player, PERIOD...NO TRADE!
Go ahead trade Joe and Nabby get someone who will give 110% always....I know Sharks will choke this playoffs again if we still use Nabby as no 1 goalie.

people.....please don't base the whole season on this one loss!!! If people think heatley will repeat what he did last year you are crazy!! he's playing on a new team, with new players, and new coaches. He's going to need time to adjust!! AS for Marleau... HE IS THE BEST PLAYER WE HAVE!!! everybody should be thankful that the Sharks didn't trade him!! He doesn't need no damn c on his shirt to perform!!! (GO SHARKS)!!

I totally agree about about Thornton and Marleau..Marleau is one of the hearts of our team, Joe is just Joe..I would had traded Thornton in a heartbeat if we could get a good return..I have always felt that Thornton was a in season player and not a playoff performer..The Bruins figured that out and cut their losses..The fact that he is the best player but isn't captain, tell you all you need to know about Thorntons leadership qualities..
