Flyers Team Report

INSIDE SHOTS

The Flyers are quickly realizing that any kind of extended losing streak could wreak havoc on their standing in the Eastern Conference. For the second time this season the Flyers are in the throes of a three-game losing streak as they head back east for a Wednesday night visit to Long Island.

Consecutive losses to the Sharks, Coyotes and Avalanche marked the second time this season the Flyers have been dealt three straight losses. This time it dropped them into a four-way tie for the final two playoff spots in the East.

And while no one in Philadelphia is ready to push the panic button, there are real concerns about how the team will handle its next 14 games without forwards Simon Gagne(notes) (hernia), Blair Betts(notes) (shoulder) and Darroll Powe(notes) (wrist).

Much of the scoring load will be placed on Mike Richards(notes), Jeff Carter(notes), Danny Briere(notes), Scott Hartnell(notes) and Claude Giroux(notes), while call-ups David Laliberte(notes), Andreas Nodl(notes) and Jared Ross try to fill their roles as secondary scorers and solid defensive forwards.

The Flyers will also rely on something they have not received in recent games—solid goaltending from Ray Emery(notes). The 27-year-old netminder has given up 12 goals in his last three starts and was pulled from a 5-4 defeat in Colorado on Monday night.

That could lead to Brian Boucher(notes) getting the call on Long Island when the Flyers face John Tavares(notes) for the first time.

Avalanche 5, Flyers 4:   After being scolded by general manager Paul Holmgren for their lackadaisical play in back-to-back losses, the Flyers came out flat against the Avalanche, falling behind 5-2 before mounting a furious third-period comeback that fell short.

“We played with all kinds of desperation at the end,” Flyers coach John Stevens said. “But if we played with that kind of desperation in the beginning of the hockey game we would have made a game of it. It’s not good enough.”

Danny Briere had a hand in all four Philadelphia goals, scoring two and assisting on both of Jeff Carter’s goals. But it was a giveaway by Carter that gave the Avs a three-goal lead after goaltender Ray Emery had already been lifted for Brian Boucher.

NOTES, QUOTES

• RW Danny Briere was suspended for two games Tuesday for his late hit the night before on Colorado’s Scott Hannan(notes). The hit came after Hannan had just scored a goal.

• The Flyers’ special-teams prowess abandoned them on their road trip. The penalty kill rebounded Monday night by killing all six penalties, but before that had fallen from 10th to 18th after allowing five goals in three games. The power play had gone three straight games without a goal, falling from first in the NHL to third before Carter netted one in the final period.

• With a makeshift lineup, coach John Stevens moved C Jeff Carter onto a line with LW Scott Hartnell and RW Claude Giroux, C Mike Richards onto a line with LW James van Riemsdyk(notes) and RW Danny Briere, and C Mike Pyorala onto a line with LW Dan Carcillo and RW Ian Laperriere(notes). But with the Flyers desperate to get things going in the third period, Stevens put Richards with Carter and Briere.

Quote To Note:   “I wasn’t pleased at all with the effort. It’s a tough league. I don’t think you can look at any team and say, ‘There’s an automatic two points.’ I can guarantee one thing. If you don’t put forth effort, you won’t win against anyone. I wasn’t happy with the game (Saturday in Phoenix). We have to dig in a little harder and work for things. I don’t think the last few games we have.”—GM Paul Holmgren after the Flyers’ losing streak reached two. It became three Monday.

ROSTER REPORT

Goaltenders:   Ray Emery, Brian Boucher

Defensemen:   Matt Carle(notes), Chris Pronger(notes), Braydon Coburn(notes), Kimmo Timonen(notes), Ryan Parent(notes), Oskars Bartulis(notes)

First Line:   LW James van Riemsdyk, C Mike Richards, RW Danny Briere

Second Line:   LW Scott Hartnell, C Jeff Carter, RW Claude Giroux

Third Line:   LW Dan Carcillo, C Mika Pyorala(notes), RW Ian Laperriere

Fourth Line:   LW Andreas Nodl, C Jared Ross, RW David Laliberte

Player Notes:

• RW Claude Giroux picked up his first fighting major of his career when he went toe-to-toe with Marek Svatos(notes). Giroux handled himself well in the fight, connecting on several uppercuts.

• C Jeff Carter, despite scoring two goals, finished minus-2 and lost 10 of 18 faceoffs.

• G Ray Emery allowed four goals on only 17 shots and was taken out of the game late in the second period.

• LW Scott Hartnell’s goaltender-interference penalty late in the game took away any chance of a late Flyers comeback and angered coach John Stevens.

Medical Watch:

• RW Arron Asham(notes) (strained left oblique muscle, 7-10 days); LW Simon Gagne (hernia, 4-6 weeks); C Blair Betts (dislocated right shoulder, 4-6 weeks); LW Darroll Powe (hand/wrist, 4-6 weeks).

I agree with El BEcko... Sydney does suck, and Philly will let you know next time you're in town.
I'd rather have Malkin, FLeury or Gonchar.

So as A FLyer fan, yes he still sucks and so do you BofS...

BofS: To address your question in post #58, YES!!! He is not even the best player on his team. He is a whiner, takes dives gets away with cheap shots and is prone to slumps (which we have already seen this season). Does he have awesome skills? No doubt about it but he does not have the complete package I look for in a franchise player. The handshake snub in Detroit put a black eye on the sport. If given the opportunity to take any one player from the Penguins and put him on the Flyers, Crosby would be way down the line.

@ John H. I don't know about other Pens fans but I read all the team reports because I am not just a Pens fan, but a hockey fan. I play fantasy hockey and there are a couple useful players in orange for those purposes. Also, maybe Pens fans read the Flyers' report just because they can read, unlike most Philly fans. Hahahahahaha.

Ugh, I'm so sick of all this stupid trash talk between Pens fans and Flyers fans. (Or Pens fans and anyone, really.) Let's just see what happens on the ice this year, okay?

What are Pens fans doing reading the Flyers Team Report anyway, unless they're just looking to start a fight and then act like they're the victim....

Grow up already. (And that goes for both sides.)

@ rob. You're an idiot. First off the Pens aren't that good on the powerplay, even when they are healthy. Second, the only series I remember watching where the Pens spent a lot of time on the power play was Philly because your team is a bunch of undisciplined goons. (Way to make a splash at the trade deadline by grabbing Carcillo, he was worth it LOL) Third, Ovechkin got away with murder against the Pens. (Illegal stick curve? Knee on Knee anyone). Fourth, Carolina did just stop shooting against the Pens and Malkin owned Cam Ward in that series. Last but not least, the Red Wings played without Datsyuk for almost the entire Cup final and when he did play he was not 100%. Get your facts straight before you make ignorant posts that show you know nothing about Hockey. Uneducated fans like you are the reason why 75% of the Flyers roster would be better at boxing or UFC then hockey. Good luck with your band of cannibalistic, finger biting goons this year jerky.

if u honestly believe that the penguins won their cup honestly u are as delusional as u say i am . look at the power plays that were given to them time after time they cant hang 5 on 5 and thats a fact . like all of a sudden carolina stopped shooting and got undiciplined as well as every time the pens were overwhelmed they got another gift phantom call and isnt it funny that zetterberg who led the nhl in takeaways all of a sudden couldnt hang on to the puck and the #1 team in puck possesion inexplicably turned the puck over and couldnt make a 3 foot pass to each other we all saw the pens blanked by philly and detroit then the next game both teams became undiciplined and the pens werent called for anything enjoy your phony cup it aint happening this year ..... how many games have they lost now? just wondering .... peace

I agree with #52 -Steve... #48 rob is wrong..Im not a Pens fan, but to say that the cup was givin to the Pens... stupid. Yes, im sure the league likes that a team full of its marketable stars won the cup, but thats it, they did not make it easier for them. Keep your conspiracy theories in politics where they belong. I guess Tampa and Carolina just won their cups cos the league didnt want them to relocate either? And while we were at the conspiracy game, the league let three Canadian teams get to the Cup finals this decade to keep fans in Canada quiet about having a disadvantage financially but didnt let them win cos the cup does more for the game being won by non-traditional markets? My point is, there is a theory of all this behind the scenes fixing. It sounds stupid and is stupid.

Rob, #48, way to spin this into your own delusional anti Penguins rant. You're right. The Pens suck and were handed a cup without having to work for it. Keep tellin yourself that. They didn't have to battle the Flyers, Caps, or Detroit, winning huge games on enemy ice, against all odds. Here's to Max Talbot "shhhh" ing you to another early spring of golf.

This is STILL a team with no direction, no plan and no discipline. This coach has gotten a pass, for what I'm not sure. It's time to look at the winners and the losers and figure out what the difference is. The winners don't have more talent than the Flyers...but they don't make the same mistakes game after game, year after year. Ok, the new goalie is weak and can't hold on to a rebound to save his life. We have a good enough defense to make up the difference...if they know what they are supposed to be doing, and are actually doing it. The O has gotten their chances and passed on open net shots to make the fancy pass...that never gets through the other teams D. Every problem, except the goalie, can be fixed by a good coach, one that has a plan and can light a fire under his team.....not this mannequin from the minors.

“It gets taxing, especially in the hot climate out there. And bad ice. It’s pretty hard on you. It’s no different than playoff hockey. The bench gets a little shorter and the ice conditions… get worse and worse.”—D Chris Pronger...Funny to read this because obviously the Panthers-the second worst team in the entire league- didn't have a problem. Another day, another excuse. Fire Stevens already because his system isn't working. How many F*ing points are we going to p.iss away before Homer realizes this?

As much as I hate the Flyers, I have to believe they're going to be the strongest contenders for the Stanley cup in the league. Pronger adds more then size, he adds playoff composure. Lapairiere, Asham, Carcillio, Emery? This team will beat its opponents into submission. How the Islanders think they're going to manage one game against them, let alone 6 this year is going to be interesting.

I think the Flyers have a bonafide Stanley Cup roster this year -- tremendous depth and toughness, a great mix of vets and young rising stars plus one of the best bluelines in the league. I still think the Upshall - Carcillo trade was a major mistake, but that's what happens in the cap era. If there is anyway we can bring Scotty back into the mix, we would prob have the quickest 3rd line in the league with Giroux and Powe. Those guys were awesome together last year. But hopefully Carcillo can really step it up and be the energy guy/fighter who can skate without taking boneheaded penalties. Scoring some more goals wouldn't hurt much either. Add JVR and a healthy Briere back to form, and our team is stacked. I predict BIG things from the Flyers this year and some great games against the our division rivals, esp. the Pens. We match up better than ever now. And I'm not worried about Emery at all. I think he is technically very good and a tough MF who has put his past demons to rest, and Boucher is a great back-up who has matured and played great last year. With all the goalies coming up, we should finally be solid in this position for years to come. This team has dramatically turned it around after that unmentionable season just three seasons ago. Things look good in Philly. GO FLYERS!

I absolutely bleed orange as I have been a Flyers fan since they started, but I will also be the first to voice "my humble" opinions on their short comings. I feel that they have wasted their money & time investing in Briere. He's not THAT good! He shys away from hits or being hit and does nothing more than hang out at the corner of the net waiting for a feed. He's a huge number against the cap and certainly does not earn what he is being paid. I feel Gagne is another. He may be fast, but he totally misses the net with 68% of his shots! These two guys, again in my opinion, are not what the media hails them to be by any stretch of the imagination.

Also.......... Can the NHL PLEASE get rid of that disgusting hooking penalty that has quickly evolved the NHL into a glorified figure skating competition???
