Sabres Team Report

INSIDE SHOTS

The coaching world continues to spin. But not for Lindy Ruff.

The Sabres’ coach, hired in July 1997, is the longest-tenured coach in the NHL. His tenure is in the spotlight again because a coach was fired in his town. The NFL’s Buffalo Bills rid themselves of Dick Jauron.

“I’ve been more than fortunate,” Ruff said. “It’s filed somewhere between luck and the overall record, which has been good.”

Ruff is 450-340-132 with the Sabres. The wilder numbers come from the coaches who’ve come and gone since he was hired by Buffalo. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, there have been 148 coaching changes in the NHL and 453 swaps in the NHL, NFL, NBA and MLB combined.

But Ruff sticks with the Sabres, and he figures to for a while.

Senators 5, Sabres 3:   Buffalo had a 1-0 lead after Thomas Vanek(notes) scored on the power play late in the first period, but then Ottawa scored the next five goals to turn the game into a rout. Patrick Kaleta(notes) and Jason Pominville(notes) scored late for Buffalo to make the score respectable.

NOTES, QUOTES

• Ottawa improved to 21-6-4 against the Sabres since the 2005-06 season.

• The Sabres are in the midst of their longest winless streak of the season, a three-game skid in which they are 0-2-1.

• The Sabres were outscored 3-0 and outshot 28-11 during the second period of their two weekend games.

Quote To Note:   “It takes us a little while to get the brains turned on, and it’s not good enough. We need to find an answer for it, and fast.”—Sabres forward Adam Mair(notes).

• G Patrick Lalime made just his second start of the season. He stopped 21 of 26 shots to fall to 0-2.

Tyler Myers cannot be sent back to juniors, he has been one of the Sabres best players in the first seven games. Obviously its a long season so it will be interesting to see how he plays during the dog days of the season. Miller looks like a top 5 goalie so far. The 3rd and 4th lines look solid. The Sabres still need a reliable faceoff man and a good backup goalie. With the Olympics this year, backup goaltending could be an important issue. GO SABRES.

Micheal N, quit your cyring and let it go. Teh 56 and 25 points between Drury and Briere last year makes them not worth what they are getting paid.

We could have a team with neutral zone trapp and good goaltending lead us to the playoffs if we can only continue to outshoot teams

Mancari was signed a week ago... why do I even read these stupid team reports? Yahoo! might be the only media outlet that covers hockey more poorly than ESPN.

The Sabres are gonna suck this year. And I couldn't care less. We had a Stanley Cup team a few years ago, and then ownership/management threw it away. We'll never again have as much talent on this team as we did when we lost to Carolina.

Should make a move to try and sign Zherdev...another 25 to 30 goal scorer would be nice....or we should find a real center man and let Hecht back to his natural position of left wing where his success as always been

ps - editing is an important part of writing, perhaps we should look at the last part of this article as an example.... the buffalo sabres drafted MARCUS foligno this year, nick foligno plays for the Senators, simple editing people try it sometime!

My wife knitted me a tissue box holder with a running Buffalo on one side, the Buffaslug on the other (Hey, its better than those hideous black and white - half of the other teams in the league wears em-crappy things :-) and the crossed sabres on the small sides. It was s'posed to be a gag gift for my B-day (July 13th), but I fear that I'll need it this fall, winter spring & summer and the next several years too!! :-(
