Thrashers Team Report
INSIDE SHOTS
Consistency, or a lack thereof, had been one of the main reasons it took goaltender Ondrej Pavelec(notes) longer than expected to break into a starting role. Unfortunately for the Thrashers, not much has changed with the 22-year-old Czech.
After starting out the season as the team’s clear-cut No. 1 netminder, Pavelec has struggled mightily in goal since late November. In Wednesday’s loss to the Bruins, Pavelec allowed three goals on the first 10 shots he faced and was replaced by Johan Hedberg(notes).
While Atlanta’s problems of late can’t solely be blamed on its goaltending, the uncertainty that surrounds the position lately might be a contributing factor to the team’s overall tentative play.
When a team lacks confidence in its goalie, the rest of the players are often afraid to make a mistake out of fear that the puck will end up in the net. On the other hand, when a goalie is at the top of his game, defensemen aren’t afraid to take risks and forwards can focus more on scoring, spending less time worrying about their defensive-zone coverage.
Until that confidence returns, Atlanta will continue to look more and more like the Thrashers of old and less like the new-look Thrashers who surprised many opponents earlier this season.
Bruins 4, Thrashers 0: Atlanta dropped its sixth straight game and seventh of the last eight as the Bruins topped the Thrashers for the ninth straight time. Thrashers captain Ilya Kovalchuk’s(notes) 10-game point scoring streak ended, and Ondrej Pavelec allowed three goals on 10 shots before being replaced in goal by Johan Hedberg. The game marked the first time Atlanta has been shut out this season.
NOTES, QUOTES
• One of Atlanta’s biggest issues during its current six-game losing streak has been its poor penalty killing. Coming into Wednesday’s meeting with the Bruins, the Thrashers had killed off just 18 of 30 penalties. They allowed just one power-play goal on five attempts against the Bruins but still lost.
• The Thrashers won’t be represented on the high-profile Canadian Olympic team, but the team’s list of Olympians continues to grow. Goalie Ondrej Pavelec and defenseman Pavel Kubina(notes) were among those named to the Czech Republic team.
• Thrashers prospect Jeremy Morin continues to pile up the points as a member of the U.S. team in the World Junior Championship. Morin added a goal and an assist in the Americans’ 12-1 win over Latvia. Morin ranks fourth in scoring on the team with two goals and two assists in three games.

• C Todd White(notes), who has just three goals this season and is scoreless in his past 29 games, was scratched for Wednesday’s game against the Bruins. Perhaps the benching will serve as a wakeup call for White, whose frustration had become more evident with every passing game.
• G Ondrej Pavelec, in his rookie season with the Thrashers, was named to the Czech Republic Olympic team a day after veteran goalie Johan Hedberg was left off of Sweden’s team for next month’s Vancouver Games.
