NHLPA forms review committee
The National Hockey League Players’ Association confirmed the results Friday of an executive board vote that created a committee of Rob Blake(notes), Chris Chelios(notes), Nicklas Lidstrom(notes) and Mark Recchi(notes) to review union operations.
“Rob, Chris, Nik and Mark will convene a conference call in the next few days to determine the nature and extent of the review; the advisers who will be recommended to be retained to assist them, and the next steps to take,” the NHLPA said in a release.
The result of the vote, first reported Wednesday, was 25-5 in favour of the motion.
The NHLPA also said in the release it won’t comment further on the situation.
Chelios spurred the motion by organizing a conference call for NHLPA player representatives last Sunday to voice his concerns on the way that former union head Paul Kelly was ousted.
The initial vote on Sunday was 19-3 in favour of the motion to form the review committee.
Eight player reps weren’t present on the call and had 72 hours to make a decision via email or phone. Chelios needed a minimum of 25 votes cast and 20 in favour of the motion for it to pass, which is what eventually happened when the other player reps cast their votes.
