Probe ordered after Calgary Flames score flu shots while public waits

CALGARY - The Alberta government has launched an investigation into how members of the Calgary Flames and their families scored swine flu shots at a special clinic as thousands of people waited in line for the vaccine or were turned away.

Alberta Health Minister Ron Liepert said he wants to know if the shots were "inappropriately diverted" to the hockey players while other Albertans stood in line for hours.

"There is only one supplier in the province and that's us," he said. "They would only be diverted with the approval of the chief medical officer of health."

Dr. Andre Corriveau, Alberta's chief medical health officer, said he first learned about the issue through the news media Tuesday and declined to comment due to the investigation.

Ken King, president of the NHL club, said the players and their families received their shots on Friday at a private location. He said the organization contacted Alberta Health Services and requested the clinic based on recommendations from team doctors, the NHL and provincial guidelines in place at the time.

"We thought that we were working within a protocol that Alberta Health Services thought was appropriate," he said.

Players are at a high risk of spreading the virus "due to the fact that they have frequent physical contact, onerous domestic and cross-border travel, extreme exertion and, frankly, are in very close contact with other teams," he said Tuesday.

Part of the consideration was that players are frequently recognized and could have caused a stir at a mass clinic, he said.

"The whole notion of some sort of a sideshow at these clinics, thereby also creating, perhaps, longer lineups and other issues and maybe more complications for other people."

The revelation is one more hit for the Alberta government, which is facing mounting criticism for the way it has managed its swine flu vaccination program.

Initially, anyone who came to one of the mass clinics set up across the province was vaccinated. But that led to huge lineups and the clinics have been closed since the weekend so the plan could be rejigged to focus on high-risk patients.

Starting Thursday, only children between the ages of six months and under five years will be eligible to get the vaccine, followed by pregnant women.

Opposition politicians charged the hockey players were given special treatment because of their star status.

"It's a failure of leadership that we are providing vaccines willy-nilly to whoever has money, to whoever has access, when cancer patients, when chronic lung patients, when pregnant women and their children can't get it," said Alberta Liberal Leader David Swann.

"It's a violation of the basic principles of public health care."

NDP Leader Brian Mason accused the government of paying more attention to its pocketbooks than to Albertans who could die without the vaccine.

"The Calgary Flames owners have an investment to protect and together have donated more than $44,000 to the Progressive Conservative Party since 2004," Mason told the legislature.

"Why has the premier allowed millionaire friends of this PC government to receive preferential treatment over vulnerable Albertans like pregnant women and children under five?"

King said at the time the Flames requested the clinic, many Albertans who had no special risk factors were being vaccinated. He said he never would have expected such treatment under the government's new stricter guidelines.

"We wouldn't do it today because the vaccine wouldn't be available today," he said.

"We went at a time that hundreds of thousands of other Albertans of all risk profiles were getting it, and thought we were within scope.

"Clearly that didn't sit well."

Premier Ed Stelmach said Alberta Health Services will have a full report "very shortly."

In Edmonton, Allan Watt, the Oilers' vice-president of communications, said the team is keeping on top of the players' health but has not made any H1N1 vaccination arrangements for them.

"If a player wants to get a shot he can go to a clinic just like any other person," said Watt.

The NHL said last week that at least three players - forward Quintin Laing(notes) of the Washington Capitals, Edmonton Oilers defenceman Ladislav Smid(notes) and Colorado Avalanche goalie Peter Budaj(notes) - had been diagnosed with H1N1.

The league said it had "implemented no specific 'contingency plans' at this point in time" but would be prepared to do so should it become necessary.

cosmokramer you are so right, every nhl'er or athlete for that matter, should get the vaccine first, as well, every politician should get to the front as well, and we can't forget all of those businessmen who have to travel by planes, trains or autos, then there's the movie stars. We have to include all of those individuals who will be handshaking or in close contact with anyone as well. And on and on.
The set-up, at least in this country, was to be for those who are more succeptable to the virus (children, pregnant women, and/or individuals with compromisedt immune systems), to be vacinated first. Athletes are by and large in better physical condition and therefore should be able to stave off this flu. As an aside, it wasn't just the Flames who recieved the vaccine, but their families as well, not to mention Flames upper management.

In 1918 that flu took millions of lives all over the world. Whole families were near wiped out. My dad was 14 then. Living in Saskatchewan he didn't developed the flu. Having 4 brothers and 3 sisters they all got it and survived through my dads help. We didn't have the tech that we have today and the average age of man back then was probably around 50 years. Yes people live good lives then though many disease took there toll. The average life today is near 80 and the technology of today is keeping us older.

First wern't we to have enough shots to go around now there's a shortage. Then were not the people with the Chronic health conditions. There are the hospital workers, what about Airline employees that work especially the international flight or even ships that's were this crap gets into the Country. I would just bet most the elite or wealth got theres by jumping the line. What are they going to do for the 2010 give everyone a fricken mask or they will forget about it then. Players being around a lot of children well maybe keep your kids home from school or populated areas.

All travelling athletic teams deserve these shot far more than criminals who are in jails do that are recieving them long before the general public. Think about it. They travel, are often in crowed places in many cities with outbreaks, eat in public places, sleep in hotels, must be kind and sign autographs to any kid or person who confronts them plus they're often tired and injured too. They're also not even in their own city during the times the clinics are opened so just how the H. can people expect them to wait in line for shots. Hello folks. Give your heads a shake and yourself ten lashes with a wet noodle. Dumb, dumb, dumb. No one in my family will be getting the shots since one has already contracted the H1N1 flu from either the shots or waiting at a clinic to get one. I sure saw a helluva lot of people in lines for the "priority cases" that didn't need to be there and were already trying to get in when it wasn't their turn. Then griping because they weren't "first". Grow up for a change and go read something useful about these things before shooting off your big mouths.

    Konwennenhon,

The media has not downplayed this flu, but you have. In your original post you implied that those that would contract this flu would think it no worse than the regular seasonal flu that comes and goes every year. My point was to draw your attention to real people who have contracted H1N1, and for you to listen to them who have experienced this virus, rather than making sweeping generalizations with no basis in fact. To hear from those who have actually contracted this virus and what their testimony is regarding this flu, see the article posted yesterday by the Canadian Press entitled, "Experiencing the H1N1 flu: Personal tales of fatigue, fever, body aches"

It's been a long, long time since I signed into Yahoo, but I absolutely had to weigh in one commenter.

@Mark: Your archaic, racist rhetoric belongs buried in a mine shaft (preferably with you in it). You understand very little about a) Aboriginal history, b) Canadian history in general, and c) BIOLOGY

It's not even so much that you lack understanding about Indigenous peoples and their history that bothers, but your abject refusal to even TOLERATE them.

I'm not even going to waste my breath explaining to you why you're an idiot, since you'll probably just call me a liar or worse, but I just wanted to let you know that acting like a bigot in this day and age is getting real tiresome to listen to. You're a grown man, for God's sake, you should be ashamed of yourself.

Educate yourself. Please. For the benefit of your fellow human beings, read a book on Aboriginals in Canada that has been written in the last fifteen or twenty years.

@ guessm: Get your facts straight dumb azz. They were available to ALL residents. If you didn't want to pay for it and had to stand in line, too bad for you. Clinics close too you know. Go back the next day. READ! The article is meant to do exactly what it's doing. Cause a disturbance when none is needed. All you healthy individuals need to back off the lines and take care of your own homes. Get your kids the shots if you want. Those lines would have been shorter if the freaked out, healthy individuals had stayed home.

I also get up and go to work everyday where I interect with lots of people, I go to the grocery store, the bank and the gas station...there are plenty of people there also. But because I'm not some hot shot NHL player I don't get a special clinic set up. It's ridiculous that they are treated with such SPECIALTY! There are children amongst many others who are getting and sick and worse, dying of this, but no one sets anything special up for them. @#$% hockey players, @#$% the NHL, @#$% movie stars and rockstars and everyone else who gets the special treatment. It's an outrage!!

Yazzy, the scientific evidence just does not support your conjecture about the hazards of mercury preservatives. H1N1 is far more of a health risk, especially if a child is in any way potentially immunosuppressed. Your perspective of relative risk seems a little warped. (Much like the views of Ken King actually!)

just found out aboriginals in kinuso alberta are giving there next round of flue vaccines tommorrow
just bring out your white card and theres no standing in line. apparently they have allot of vaccine left more than they can use because i was just informed by health unit now since i am in a high risk categorey (asthma and chronic bronchitis) i can go get a shot also if i want one from them even though im white. Its a pretty sad system we have im over 40 and im offered a vaccine that some child could use. yes they do have a list to be put on now high risk , natives inmates, and calgary flames,

and if one child dies because someone that met those Fucd up standards got vaccinated prior to them being able to receive vaccine those morons should carry that knowledge with them for the rest of ther long pathetic lifes.

I don't think people are getting it. A lot of us can choose weather or not to travel. The more the person travels, the higher the risk of infection. Plus this is a contact sport. Anyone watching can see the sweat, the mucus and the blood. No stopping for sani gel or washing of hands. The point is that the flu shot is given to a high risk group to reduce the risk of infecting the children, pregnant, elderly teachers, nurses ect. back home or to any other community that they are travelling to. The NHL is not going to grind to a halt and stay home unless it gets a government order. I dont think it is being spoiled or favored to protect the larger picture.

This is a non issue. Who really cares? This H1N1 is being blown out of proportion. Thousands die every year with the "normal" influenza. Did anyone notice if a team got their flu shots last year? Was it a news story?

I personally think this outrage is a waist of press. They set up a clinic the players went. You didn't get your shot? Too bad for you. This was more than likely a trial to see how people reacted. You couldn't have them line up with everyone else as it definitetly cause a comotion. Also there travel schedule does put them at greater risk. No other teams will get it right away now thanks to dum dums like DRM. He may have single handedly wipe out the NHL and other sports lol lol lol.

And for the record, I'm not a Flames fan, I don't even live in Alberta. And when I said "with everyone else", I meant at the same time as everyone else because I know they went to a private clinic. But all that aside, I still think the government should be shouldering the blame on this one, they should have had an action plan from the beginning. The first wave of H1N1 hit in friggin April, so it's not like they didn't have copious amounts of time to come up with something. BC did...and we're the pot smoking hippies of Canada
