The Red Wings are a Motor City rebuilding project

DETROIT (AP)—The Detroit Red Wings have dry-erase boards in the dressing room, nestled between the showers and training room, that show how they stack up.

Usually, their winged-wheel logo is at least near the top of the Western Conference standings.

Not anymore.

Detroit’s recent surge—earning a point in seven of its last eight games— has pushed the perennial NHL powerhouse merely into an eighth-place tie after play Tuesday night.

It’s early and no one thinks Detroit is a bad team. But it’s an open question whether the Red Wings will be able to earn home ice advantage in the playoffs for an 18th straight year.

“We’re going to have to fight just to make the playoffs and it’s going to be a grind,” said senior vice president Jim Devellanno, the first person owner Mike Ilitch hired when he bought the team in 1982. “To get home-ice advantage would be a miracle. A miracle.”

Detroit has been a top-four seeded team the past 17 postseasons, winning four Stanley Cups and finishing as the runner-up last season for the second time during its dominant stretch.

Devellano says just making it to the postseason will be a difficult task because the team lost players such as Marian Hossa(notes) during the offseason who combined to score 88 goals and now is without forward Johan Franzen(notes) and Valtteri Filppula(notes) because of injuries.

Red Wings general manager Ken Holland disagreed, insisting the roster is still talented enough to win a ninth-straight Central Division title and 13th in 16 seasons.

Henrik Zetterberg(notes) and Pavel Datsyuk(notes) are two of the best players in the world and they’re in the prime of their careers,” Holland said. “Our top four defensemen rank among the best in the league and Chris Osgood(notes) has shown what he can do in goal.

“Who’s going to run away with our division? Chicago? We got off to a bad start and the Blackhawks are only two points ahead of us, and there’s still a lot of hockey left to play.”

Captain Nicklas Lidstrom(notes) said the Red Wings (6-4-3) will be able to gauge how good they are Thursday night at home against the San Jose Sharks (11-4-1), second in the Western Conference behind Colorado.

“No doubt, a top team like San Jose is a good measuring stick for us,” Lidstrom said.

The Red Wings used to set the bar for excellence for the past two decades, rolling to 18 straight playoff appearances for the longest such streak in sports and setting an NHL record with nine straight 100-point seasons.

Now, they have to dig in the corners for every win and have to work harder to get fans to come to Joe Louis Arena.

The team asked fans at Tuesday’s game against the Bruins to stand to be filmed for a commercial holding signs that read: “Hockeytown—No Limits.” If the camera panned some sections, it would’ve filmed some empty seats. The announced attendance was 19,167 in the 20,066-seat arena.

“It’s not a bad crowd for a Tuesday night,” senior vice president Steve Violetta said Tuesday night, standing in one of Joe Louis Arena’s empty suites. “Our season-ticket sales are down slightly, so we’ve had to be more aggressive with group sales and creative with nine- and 19-game plans that have flexible payment options that can be spread over six months.

“A few years ago, we were competing with other teams and entertainment options for discretionary money. Now, we’re competing with bread and milk.”

After the crowd thinned and went home after the shutout of the Bruins, most of the Red Wings went through their customary postgame workout.

Veteran Kirk Maltby(notes) then walked from the weight room and toward the player’s lounge, stopping to look at and talk about the dry-erase boards that have the Red Wings in an unfamiliar position.

“Guys need to look at it,” Maltby said. “But we have to keep things in perspective because we’ve only played 13 games. If it was a ’73’ up there instead of ’13’ it would be a different story.

“I’m not going to question what Jimmy D thinks about us at this point, but I don’t think it’s going to take a miracle to repeat in the division.”

Tied for first place in the division. Not bad for a team that is "rebuilding"

I agree with Big Daddy I think its time Ozzie gets off the free ride, I love the wings but the GOAL TENDING sucks, They deserve a top notch goalie, one that will make the hall of fame not a maybe he will be there maybe he won't. sorry Howard you don't get it either and our defense is a one man team and we all know it.

Yes the "wings are sluggish this year. They were sluggish the begining of last season to (although not as sluggish). Of course they're going to be slow early in the season with having played a lot of hockey the past 2 years. Just because Detroit is a very dominant team people expect them to be like a high-end sports car or dragster. What they are is is that massively loaded freight train that is slow to get moving but once its moving its hard to stop.

Okay, let gt a grip. Even my buddy the Canadian (and Leafs fan) says the Wings will be okay; after all, they ARE the Red Wings (His words)! There is a LONG way to go, and plenty of time to turn this around. Don't stick a fork in them yet!

They have an unusual number of young players this year, and it makes pefect sense that there would be some struggles getting them up to speed, but all of them have been here before and have long since proven that they belong inthe NHL. Certainly the talent is there, and Coach Babcock proved his ability long ago.

The Wings do NOT have to finsh in first place; all they have to do is finish on top of the Central Division. At the monment, that means getting and staying ahead of St. Louis and Chicago. Not easy, I will concede, but certainly possible and it would not be any fun to watch if it was easy.

Finally, we have a LOT of Hockey still ahead. There is plenty of time to turn this around (they have started already). By March, this will be a totally different story!

To open the season our passing, puck possession and overall effort was poor. All three of those areas look much improved the past few games. This bad start might be what this team needed. Two stanley cup appearances in as many years, we might of thought we could cruise again. Not the case this year, we lost a lot of offense, and we are all ready missing Ty Conklin. I can't believe the miracle quote, way to early. We will finish with at least first round home advantage and be a much better defensive team in the process. If we have learned anything in the past two decades is that you shouldn't count this team out. Two points out and a ton of games left.

Don't like the comment by Jimmy D. Saying it would be a miracle to win the division??? Really sends a bad message to the team and the guys fighting game in and game out. The injuries really suck...but nothing we can do. It aint that hard to make the playoffs in this league even though all the teams are pretty much even in this crappy Bettman league. Someone in the organization needs to keep the mic away from Jimmy D if he's gonna talk like this.

I can't believe that no one caught the fact that Detroit actually has won 4 cups not 3 in the last 17 years. But who's counting?

"Detroit has been a top-four seeded team the past 17 postseasons, winning three Stanley Cups and finishing as the runner-up last season for the second time during its dominant stretch."

Um. We've had the worst start in 20 years and were 2 points behind Chicago for the division lead. Plus were without two of our top forwards (Filppula and Franzen) and Osgood is starting to show signs of life. Will we win the division? Way too early to tell. Lets talk about that after 50 games. Everybody take a deep breath...............................

Sure...... I'm afraid the Redwings might miss the playoffs...(tremble-tremble)......just as I'm expecting the Lions to clinch the North and win another playoff game!

It's seems too many fans and now members of the Wings organization are already writing this season off. We had Hossa for one season and I do recall we won the cup the year before we signed him. We lost Sammy and Huds. That's it! Cheli and Kopeczky...no big deal. I would say we lost a 40 goal scorer, the other forty can be distributed between(take your pick) Williams, Bertuzzi, Leino, Helm, Abdelkader etc. They all have the capabilities of scoring at least 20 or more based on ice time.
It will take some time for this team to gel and create chemistry amongst the lines. The defense and goaltending is more my concern. I still wish it were possible to keep Conks. I feel like Howie's not going to make it past this season(just a hunch). Hopefully Ozzie can better control his roller coaster playing and be consistent. 1) Get Zetter,Dats, Bert goin 2)Lines must find chemistry once Franz n Filps return 3) Solid D/Goaltending 4) young guys gotta play hungry, earn the ice time
