Rangers F Byers suspended; coach Tortorella fined
TORONTO (AP)—New York Rangers forward Dane Byers(notes) was suspended one game for his role in a fight during the third period of Monday’s game in Vancouver.
The NHL announced the punishment Wednesday. Byers will forfeit $2,590 in salary to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
Rangers coach John Tortorella was fined $10,000 because one of his players was deemed the instigator of the altercation. His fine goes to the NHL Foundation.
The game was delayed nearly 10 minutes in the third period when Vancouver’s Ryan Kessler and New York’s Marian Gaborik(notes) started a scrum that led to five misconduct penalties.
Byers was involved in the incident. The 23-year-old will sit out Thursday night’s game in Edmonton and be eligible to return Saturday in Calgary.

Avery has taken so many cheap shots on goaltenders and smaller players that the officials are not too concerned about what happens to him. Unfortunately for him, the national sports media saw that the cheap shots could be inflamatory and generate ratings. Officials watch games on the tube, and they also watch the sportscasts to see if they are being libelled. They see his A-Game, and then if things happen in a game, they tend to see it as payback because Avery must have done something to provoke it.
If Avery wants some of his abuse called...he needs to stop hitting goaltenders from behind. He has to stop crosschecking after the whistle the skill players on the other team.
If Avery was playing against the Oilers in their heyday...he would be having a face-to-face with Semenko in the first period. Lumley in the second period. Semenko again at the start of the third period. These would have happened while he was still fifty feet away from Gretzky. No way they ever let anyone run Gretzky after the whistle.
If he tried his behind hit on Billy Smith, he would find that they do not have enough thread in NYC to sew him up.
The Rangers played a halfhearted game, and they lost because they did not put out the effort. If the Yankees put in the effort in the World Series that the Rangers put into their hockey games ~~ the Phillies would be having the parade/

vancover was all over gaborik, but not always clean. many times he was hit off the play and knocked down to the ice when the play was no where near him. So I could imagine why he might be frustrated.
how about the slew foot on redden along the boards right before the first goal was scored?

with the speed of the game and the skill of all these players the rink needs to be bigger before the whole league gets injured.
