Penguins’ Malkin sidelined with shoulder injury

PITTSBURGH (AP)—NHL scoring champion Evgeni Malkin(notes) will be lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins for two to three weeks because of a strained right shoulder.

Malkin had been attempting to play through the injury, but coach Dan Bylsma said the team decided to rest the center. The Russian star would miss seven games if he is out two weeks and 10 games if he is out three.

“He strained his shoulder about 10 days or so ago,” Bylsma said on Thursday. “I don’t know the exact day. It is precautionary for the player. We are worried about the safety of the shoulder. A couple of weeks of rest and rehab will get that thing healthy.”

The injury will end Malkin’s streak of 254 consecutive regular-season games played. The Penguins play Friday at Columbus.

“It’s early in the season. It’s fine,” Malkin said. “I feel good. It’s not a big problem.”

Malkin is tied with Sidney Crosby(notes) for the team lead in scoring with 14 points—four goals and 10 assists in 12 games. Malkin had one assist during a 6-1 victory over Montreal on Wednesday night, Pittsburgh’s eighth win in nine games.

Last season, Malkin was the MVP of the playoffs, getting 14 goals and 22 assists in 24 playoff games while helping the Penguins win the Stanley Cup. He edged Washington’s Alex Ovechkin(notes) 113-110 for the regular-season scoring title.

Penguins forward Tyler Kennedy(notes) won’t play in Columbus due to an undisclosed injury that also kept him out of the Montreal game. Kennedy has scored five goals.

To the "doctor" ...I'm also a lifelong 'Burger" and all I have to say is..BRAVO!!! Well said. Isn''t it amazing that most if not all the "haters" have probably never been to our fine city let alone our state. And yet they seem to have some hatred for our teams. I think "Doc" there is a simple explanation...Their JEALOUS... Come to think of it last year was not the first time Pittsburgh has been named the "City of Champions". So to all you haters just keep mocking us, insult us, and even make jokes about us...our teams will just keep on winning championships...GO PENS...GO STEELERS...and maybe some day Let's Go Bucs...

Pens will be fine with all that talent they have. Alex Gologoski can skate very well and needs to shoot the puck more. Max Talbot is not back yet wait till he gets back its along season players will get dinged and injured and the flu is going around so just have patience. All around alot of good hockey fun to watch.

...Or maybe all three teams are strong and in the same conference, therefore have a rivalry? It is probably as simple as that.

Bill Snyder of Houston, TX. Get over yourself! You condescending POS. I choose to shock people. I am educated and have a great life. Psychoanalyze your own family Fauk Face. I also think that people that get this wrapped up in a sports team are lacking something in their own life and should probably have direct human interaction, perhaps with their families. As for my parents; one has a Doctorate in Political Science and the other has a Bachelor's in Micro-Biology. They are both devout Christians, so go fauk yerself! Get over yourself man! This is the internet!

#83 V - Another reason Caps fans hate on Crosby and the Pens is because of the Caps' dismal playoff record against the Pens. I think the two teams have met 7 or 8 times in the playoffs and the Pens have won all but one of those series.

Flyers fans hate on Crosby and the Pens because they shot their wad on Eric Lindros and he never panned out like he was supposed to do. To get Lindros, the Flyers gave up the NHL rights to Peter Forsberg plus a handful of other players and draft picks and a boatload of money, but only made the Cup Final once and were promptly swept by the Red Wings. Lindros had one meaningless goal in that series. In only four-plus years, Crosby has brought the Pens far more success than Lindros ever did.

The Pens will be fine. With the start that they have had, they will make the playoffs and that is all the regular season is about.
If they play .500 hockey the rest of the season they will have 92 points and will be in the playoffs.
You know that they will win more than they lose so most likely above 100 points.
Lasy year they won the cup with 99 points in the regular season.
We need Gonchar and Talbot and Malkin in the playoffs more than we need them now.

Tough loss, time for Jordan Staal to prove he would be a #2 center on any other team...which I believe he will. BRETT W the Pens were never going to move to KC is was a barganing move. They desperately needed a new arena and Lemieux used that as leverage to get one. They can't turn a profit in the oldest arena in the NHL. Even with all the winning over the last few years its hard. I don't care how they got the new arena fact is they aren't going anywhere now, and all you Pens haters will have to just get used to the fact that the Pens are going to be contenders for years...Say what you want about the Pens not selling out when they were bad...no of that matters now LEGEND 125 consecutive sellouts and counting. If the only knock on the pens you can come up with was 5 years ago I'd say they are doing pretty well now. We have a baseball team?

Over the past couple years Malkin has tried to become a more physical player and in fact instigated a lot of unnecessary contact resulting in stupid penalties. He's fourth on the team in penalty minutes and only +1. He can still be a physical, but needs to revert back to more of a finesse style when he returns or he'll continue to rack up PIMs and risk injury. Go Pens!

Does Anyone See What I See, The Pens Though They Are Winning They Still Pass The Puck Way To Much. Put More Goals On Net And They Would Score Alot More Goals. Maybe I Am Mistaken But When They Stop Scoring Goals Just Remember What I Said.

I love people. About 50% of the comments on this page are as follows :

"How dare you insult my team/city etc etc"

    followed by

"Your team/city is @#$%y! etc etc"

    Hypocrisy at its finest.

Damn, I didn't realize I had wrtten a book...lol For that I do apologize and use fatigue as well as that idiot Impeach aggravating me as an excuse. Bill (Snyder) all I can say is well said! I am also an athlete, albeit "retired". There is very little sportsmanship left in this country.
But before I end up writting another "book", I'll just say G'night and take care....
