Kings LW Smyth out a while with upper-body injury

LOS ANGELES (AP)—Just when the Los Angeles Kings had grown to love Ryan Smyth’s(notes) contributions to their top line, they lost the gritty left wing for perhaps a month.

Smyth is expected to be out of the Kings’ lineup for a few weeks because of an upper-body injury, the club disclosed Wednesday. It’s the first big dose of adversity for Los Angeles, which has the Western Conference’s third best record early in its quest to end a six-season playoff drought.

Smyth has nine goals and 14 assists in his first 22 games with the Kings, who acquired him from Colorado during the offseason. The 15-year NHL veteran has been a major contributor in Los Angeles’ solid start, providing sharp passes and steady leadership in a pairing with league scoring leader Anze Kopitar(notes) on the Kings’ top line.

“He’s one of the key guys on our team, for sure, but that doesn’t matter right now,” Kopitar said. “He’s going to be gone for a month, and somebody else is going to have to step up. We’re just going to have to play hard without him and try to win games. We’re all going to miss him, but his injury is not going to be healed tomorrow.”

Smyth also hadn’t given up his trademark grit in front of the net while getting off to one of the quickest offensive starts of his own career. He has never scored more than 70 points in a season, but was on pace for 86 before the injury.

“What he does very well is his composure with the puck,” Kings coach Terry Murray said. “He handles it in pressure situations, makes the game look easy and slows the game down. He can take it to the net, make plays off of plays in the offensive zone, and can make something happen out of nothing very easily.”

The Kings aren’t disclosing the nature of Smyth’s injury, but he didn’t return after the second period of a game Monday at Florida, Los Angeles’ final stop on a five-game trip.

Alexander Frolov took Smyth’s spot at left wing on the top line during the Kings’ 3-2 loss to Philadelphia on Wednesday night. Frolov was the Kings’ leading goal scorer with 32 last season, but he’s been inconsistent this fall, even getting benched for a game by Murray.

“Frolov’s a pretty good hockey player,” Murray said. “(He’s) a little bit different in style, but it’s not like they haven’t played together in the past. They have to figure out that part for themselves. It’s an opportunity for Kopi to really step up his game to the next level, I think, and say, ‘Hey, look, I’m a part of the reason why success is happening for me also.”’

Frolov went scoreless in 21 minutes of play against Philadelphia, managing just one shot. He hasn’t scored a goal in 10 games, and has just four this season while getting bumped to the checking line.

“On the other side of it with Fro, I think this is a great opportunity for him,” Murray said. “He can play on that line, play important minutes, big minutes, and be looked at as a player that’s more on the offensive side of the game than the checking line.”

Defenseman Rob Scuderi also sat out due to a lower-body injury. The Kings haven’t said how long he’ll be out.

quote " Do us Kings fans a favor and hang yourself so we don't have to hear how much you've suffered as a fake @ss fan! "

You havent suffered? Youve enjoyed the last 20 years? you like watching the Kings win 10 playoff games in 15 years?

If you like it then you aren't a fan. I know loads of red wing fans that love the way the kings suck.

Tim- You're the f'ing idiot! Have you watched any games this season? I've watched them and supported them in the cellar for years now, they are looking like a team on the rise and will be one of the premiere temas in the league by next season.

All the pieces are in place. So Tim, if you don't want to root for another team and you obviously don't root for the Kings by calling the TRUE FANS idiots, then choose another sport! Put your Lakers shirt on and don't comment on anything releated to something you obviously know nothing about! I'm sure you'll be jumping on the band wagon when the Kings are a perrenial playoff power house.

Tim, do you ever post anything different? I'm starting to think all you do is cut and paste the same comment on every Kings blog. Do us Kings fans a favor and hang yourself so we don't have to hear how much you've suffered as a fake @ss fan!

Tim, they don't "suck." They are seriously lacking at left wing, and that was exposed (again) when Smyth went down.

Once a Kings fan, always a kings fan. I have invested too much disappointment over the years to see the effort go to waste on another team. Just wish dicks from other states wouldn't move here and bring their home town loyalties with them. Every one wants to live in SoCal and no one wants to root for the teams. So many annoying Orange Shirts at the game last night. Take your world famous cheese steak sandwiches and shove them up you rear end before you get on the plane back to Philly.

Then again, if I was raised in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, or Detroit, I'd wanna get out of there too.

I don't want to go "cheer for another team". I'm a Kings fan. Better part of thirty years.

But facts are facts. They SUCK! AEG doesn't care that they suck because "fans" like you will continue to support them NO MATTER WHAT!.

If you idiots would let AEG know that they better improve the team or else... then maybe something good would happen.
But no! Keep sending the message that you will continue to watch the team with your fingers crossed that maybe just maybe someday they might make the playoffs again.

I blame you for there level of suck. It's your fault.

A slide like 08-09 ? Are you kidding ? 08-09 ? They have won 10 playoff games in the last 15 years. TEN! They will finish last in the league...again... like always.

I'm a life long Kings fan but you have to face facts. They are horrible. They will always be horrible.
They are 5-6 players away from being a playof team.

Embrace it and the games get easeir to watch.

Lord help them avoid a slide that looks like '08-'09, without Smyth! They may have lost all that chemistry we were so happy to see this season.
