Hurricanes G Ward to spend extra night in hospital

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP)—Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward(notes) remained in an Ohio hospital after his leg was cut by a skate, and general manager Jim Rutherford says he could miss up to four weeks.

Ward was expected to remain in Columbus, Ohio, through Sunday and return to Raleigh on Monday for further evaluation by the team’s head orthopedic doctor.

Ward didn’t fly home after the Hurricanes’ 3-2 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday night because of concerns about the stress of the flight on his injury.

He stretched to make a save while Blue Jackets forward Rick Nash(notes) skated through the crease in the first period, and it appeared Nash or a defenseman nicked Ward in the leg with a skate.

I love the wording in the article.... "it appeared Nash or a defenseman nicked Ward in the leg with a skate", I guess it could have been a sliver of ice or maybe one of the buckles on the pads that led to the puddles of blood on the ice. The fact that there was not a penalty on the play when Cam was obviously in the crease is a bit mystifying. I guess skate blades do not count when considering if contact was made with a goalie. All in all it is par for the course this year for the Canes. The fair weather fans will fall away and seek comfort from their college sports team.
Good seats will be available at the RBC Center!

Good thing this isn't football and Cam Ward isn't Tom (Marsha) Brady...they'd change the rules so that everyone plays barefoot....and has their toenails perfectly pedicured so the Golden One doesn't get a boo-boo again. The intelligent fans of the greatest sport know how tough these guys are. For someone to possibly miss that amount of time tells you about the seriousness of the injury. Get well soon, Cam....and ALL injured warriors of the greatest sport on Earth!

A lot of skate injuries lately - Ward, Bieksa, Zednik, Malarchuk. The NHL is long overdue in banning players from wearing skates - they are dangerous! Perhaps when they ban hitting later this year, they'll do the right thing and ban skates at the same time. /sarcasm

That sucks. Never like to see an injury like that... In fact I'm TOTALLY over all the big injuries in the league this season... That even includes OVIE, yes i said it.

When players get more and more nasty injuries like this, eventually it leads to some sort of protective gear. There's got to be some sort of protective cloth that can't be cut through as such, to wear over the areas that aren't protected by padding and "armor". Even though such cuts are rare, they do happen. Didn't a Ref die due to a skate cut to the neck, that happened near the goal? Possibly AHL incident, but it did happen.
Sad injury, prayers and hopes for him, to heal and recover enough to get back to work.

Hurricanes are 2-11-3 good for 7 points. Ouch! Now they lost their starting goal tender up to 1 month with deep cut on his leg. Double ouch! Any way every team has injuries. I am not a Cane's fan. I am a King' s fan. They are 10-4-2 good enough for 22 points, 4 points behind San Jose Sharks. The Sharks are on top of Pacific division. Kings will go on the road for 5 games starting at Windy City to take on J Teows, P Kane, and P Sharp and Blackhawks. I remember a movie called Black Hawk Down. Then Wed 11/11/09 Kings take on Hurricanes. Wed 11/11/09 is Veteran's Day. Guess what folks, after Veteran's Day it is Thanksgiving. Kings will not see Cam Ward. I don't even know who the Canes back up goalie is. We'll see if the Kings can win that game on Wed 11/11/09. Go Kings!

"Ward said at the time that he didn’t feel that injury, but the cut was deep enough for him to see the muscle."

Augh. Man, this guy gets messed up.

Using the word "dumb" in his post then going on to misspell many words, saying "flashes of greatest" instead of "flashes of greatNESS and then saying "GS" Giguere when it is really JS (Jean Sebastian) Now that's dumb and shows the real clown is ScottT

sucks for ward but lets face it the canes have been crap so far ths season. If Columbus ends up winning this will make it a 12 game loosing streak. Lets face it, its not a big deal that Ward is out. Maybe there backup goalie will do something.

Ward looked really, really bad when he was taken off the ice. Couldn't move his legs at all, they basically carried him back to the locker room. Don't know what exactly happened, but obviously that cut severed something. Carolina's in trouble.

He's a decent goaltender and wins when it counts. Good job locking him up, price is high, but why else would anyone go to Carolina anyway?
