Hurricanes forward Ruutu suspended 3 games

NEW YORK (AP)—Carolina Hurricanes forward Tuomo Ruutu(notes) has been suspended three games by the NHL for a boarding of Darcy Tucker(notes) that knocked the Colorado Avalanche winger unconscious.

Ruutu was assessed a major penalty and game misconduct for boarding Tucker at 5:26 of the second period of Friday night’s game.

Ruutu will lose $56,067.36 in salary for the suspension, which was announced Saturday. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

Ruutu will miss games against Columbus on Saturday, St. Louis on Wednesday and Philadelphia on Oct. 31. He will be eligible to return Nov. 1 against San Jose.

Tucker was taken off the ice on a backboard. The team said he had a concussion but was alert. He was taken to a hospital early Saturday for treatment and evaluation.

The most amazing thing is that when a Hurricane player gets knocked out, its a 'clean hit', even if it results in a broken neck. The league bias against the 'Canes has always been sad and pathetic.

It was a dirty hit, and Rutuu needs to be suspended, but I can't help wonder if Tucker had done it, everyone would say that he's a tough player and hitting is part of the game.

Look all you jerks who are sitting there yeah he deserved it no he didnt no one does and since all you B^^^ches think he did why dont you be on the ice not moving and be slammed so hard into the glass that your knocked out. Get a grip no one deserves this and its because of pu**ys like rutu and his idiot brother and people like them that hockey has a bad name. They cant play fair the only thing they do is play dirty.
What the league needs to do is start kicking these players out or suspending them for the same amount of time that the people they hurt are.

All PLAYERS NO MATTER THE TEAM OR HOW THEY ACT OFF THE ICE IS NO EXCUSE FOR HURTING ANOTHER PLAYER OR CHEERING THEM ON......... GET A GRIP OR SHUT UP YOUR IGNORANCE IS SHOWING

Wow moose...ask me not to bash a sport, then bash me personally. Be glad yer probably in the great white north. Cuz yakkin' like that at me in person would be unhealthy. But hey, maybe we could both go to prison for the whoopin' i'd have to give ya'. Then i could trade your punk a$$ for a pack of marlboro's. Watch yer mouth Jr. Ya' might get in trouble. But maybe i would just be using my "right to retaliate". Absurd term fella'. Fouls are called in every game, but you have no "right" to punch a guy. You think when a basketball player catches an elbow, he should be able to give one back??? A football player who gets facemasked, etc??? yer I.Q. is showing man. Give it up already.

"stuffed in lockers" whew that is indeed comedy. Gotta' love it. I am still laughin'. Goooood stuff man, goooood stuff. You assume what...that i can't fight so i am offended by violence? Neato. I am certainly not offended by the fighting. It simply takes away from an otherwise well thought out game. We had the Blackhawks and now the Stars. I attended at least 20 Blackhawks games and 4 Stars playoff games. Everything but the fighting was cool. The fighting made it a joke.

Figure skaters. LoL With sticks! LmAo You prefer boxing on ice. Good for you.

yea assassin i remember the "goons" actually they were called enforcers and most of the skaters could avoid them, and if each team had their enforcer on the ice at the same time then they usually fought each other.i was just trying to belay the fact that its no longer a skaters game but a hitters game, even on espn or other sport shows they only show the hits, and now it seems that kids growing up think thats what its all about.

Yeah hillbilly , you're right. It is America, and God bless it. You are correct also that the sport isn't called fighting. Although I have to admit that if you took the right to retaliate out of the "game" there would be many more liberties taken than needed. All players know that there are indeed consequences to pay when they fight. The choice is theirs. I can understand your feelings that you would prefer watching figure skaters with sticks out there, but that's probably because you were stuffed in lockers when you were in school as a child. Fighting comes as part of the game As I said before deal with it and move on. There are many other sports you can watch that don't offend your intelligence and and your feelings about violence. Have a nice day, eh hoser??

@MJK, just because you are a Darcy Tucker groupie doesn't make you correct. The fact that you defend a goon just proves that you are not very bright either.

Needs to know how to land? That's pretty funny. Maybe he should learn how to play hockey instead of imitating Hulk Hogan.

Yeah it was the playoffs on the hit on Peca, and his playoff season would have continued if he wasn't deliberately injured by a goon. It wouldn't have mattered if it was the first game of the season or the next to last. It's a play that is bad for all of hockey, and he chose to make it voluntarily.

Thankfully we have players like Ruutu to remind him that he can be beat at his own game. Just came years too late.

How where is Dale Hunter, maybe one of the Ruutu's can take him out for that Pierre Turgeon nonsense....

Hey moose....the game is not fighting. They are two seperate things. "Bashing" is all i ever see on these posts. Don't get upset because somebody points out the ignorance of your favorite game. Take the fighting out and ya' got a very interesting game. With the fighting, which is obviously just to sell tickets, it's lame. In fact...it's assault. Are ya' telling me it's not strange that a guy gets suspended for a check into the boards, but not for fist fighting. C'mon! Do you a favor, excuse me "us all" a favor???? Well, my give a damn is busted fella'.

P.S. "read about what i like"? How 'bout I read whatever i like? Freekin communist. (nick pun intended)

Hey Hillbilly, do us all a favor, stick to playing pocket ball. If you don't like how the game is played, read about what you do like. No need to bash a sport that has been around longer than you have. Like all sports, it's flawed. Deal with it and move on. It's not like you have any money invested in it.

Man...you guys actually call a hockey player "dirty"? The whole "sport" is dirty! It's a joke...when you can simply start pounding on somebody it's not a sport. Hockey just plain sucks because of that ONE principle... you are ALLOWED to fist fight! Refs stand and watch fights??? Maybe ya' gotta' be canadian to appreciate such...ahem....KaaaaRaaap. Only "sport" in the entire world folks...the ONLY one, where you can bare knuckle somebody in the jaw and get a paltry penalty. I was hoping when the lawsuit against the idiot who slashed a guy with his skate on purpose was over, maybe the idiocy would stop. Nope! Get frustrated...just punch a guy in the face. Sport??? Sportsmanship be damned apparently.

As for the suspension...because he hit someone "intentionally"???? That's what they do when they throw off the gloves isn't it???? No suspension for breaking a guys nose because he is just tooooo good for you to cover and you get frustrated. But it's not okay if you are not fighting????

No television so to speak of, poor attendance league wide....sounds like soccer. Wait...it's JUST like soccer. A sport whole heartedly not an American past time. Keep hockey ya' canucks, cuz i don't get what it's a Boat eh.

Just imagine the ignorance....football players rippin' off helmets and duking it out at the 15 yard line...Baseball players swinging bats at each other....basketball players ALLOWED to fight....mayhem. I guess if your sport can't stand on merit, it can on ignorance. Pffftttt.

Uh, David A.. Not sure what NHL you have been watching over the years, but the NHL is way less brutal then it used to be in the old days. Do you not remember the days when teams carried "GOONS" that couldn't skate, or handle the puck? Their only job was to kick people's ass.

There have always been cheap shot artists in any sport. So just chalk it up to that. Not some sort of degradation of the sport.

since the league went to teams every where and became more americanized it has become a league of bullies and less of skating and stick handling, when there were just the original 6 teams
thats when you saw skating and puck handling, and even with the first expansion it wasnt too bad
the good old days of "orr, hull ,lefleur, guys who could skate and shoot, now its just who can hit the hardest , hockey used to be "art" on ice now its the wwf.

Bias shows itself on all sides of the conference doesn't it kiddos.

    Tucker's a dirty player?

Oohs wait.. the best comment out in this trash talk is that the Avalanche is a group of hard hitters? The Avs... ooh I nearly wet myself on that one. Who do you follow? The NHL Refs? FFS.

The idiot spewing forth the crap about Mike Peca. rme... Want to talk about chain reactions?

Tucker 'ending' Peca's season? It was the freaking playoffs. His season WAS finished you moronic bag of air.

Lets continue on this echo of nothingness.

Tucker - Peca - Selanne - Pronger - OMG this is where I'll just giggle and stop coz Pronger's just a ripple through almost every team in the league.

No player. NO player deserves to end up on the ice. Doesn't matter if you like Tucker, the Colorado Avalanche. Or not. Hell hate them them or love them, despise the Canes, Wings or the Leafs. I don't care if you stroke for your Granny. There's safe ways to hit, and there's not. The hit on Tucker to Peca was safe. A player also needs to know how to land. Then there's times when your body's just going to give out. Deal with it.

I'm not a Toronto fan. I am a fan of Darcy Tucker's. I am a Colorado Avalanche fan and proud of it.

Lose your bias before you open your mouths and let them lose on your kbs.

Cheers. Good luck tonight on the full roster of games, guys and gals. :)

That's a dirty hit by a dirty piece of @#$% player, not that Tucker is much better, but the fact remains, it's yet another hit from behind, square in the numbers, and Ruutu deserves a suspension, and more. Ruutu turns turtle like the little @#$% he is when confronted. Get this scumbag out of the game...and his brother too.

As for the Peca is smiling somewhere...is Selane smiling somewhere too because Peca got his bell rung and so on... the instigator needs to be removed from the game and players need to be accountable for their actions.

Anyone who thinks the Ruutu's are not dirty players needs to have their head examined.
