Flyers’ F Gagne expected to miss 6-8 weeks

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Flyers winger Simon Gagne(notes) is expected to miss the next six to eight weeks after having abdominal and hip surgery.

Gagne, who missed the past two games, is scheduled for surgery on Tuesday.

“It’s hard to take, but it’s still early in the season,” Gagne said. “I’ll miss close to two months and have time to get back in shape and feel 100 percent when I’m skating. That’s something I wasn’t able to do right now.”

The 29-year-old Gagne, who has one goal and four assists, has two small hernias in his right groin, the same area that required hernia surgery before the 2007-08 season. He also has had multiple hip operations due to problems linked to the groin.

“He’s had repairs in both of those areas before, so the doctor wants to go through those same incisions—they’re just small incisions—and reinforce and strengthen the area,” Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said. “He will look at the small hernias that we saw in the ultrasound and see if they really are there.”

The Flyers wanted Gagne to have surgery earlier, but Gagne sought a second opinion. The team issued a statement Saturday saying it was still reviewing MRI, ultrasound and bone scan results, and hadn’t made a decision.

The delay “was more to just make sure Simon was feeling comfortable with what was going on,” Holmgren said. “I think deep down, he just wanted to know which is right. It does seem frustrating at times, but at the end of the day you’ve got to trust the player. Simon’s been through a lot and we just wanted to make sure we get it right.”

Added Gagne: “We went to the bottom (of it) to make sure we were making the right decision for myself, the team and the future, to go and do the surgery. We’re going to do the surgery and get on a program to make sure those types of injuries don’t happen to me anymore.”

Danny Briere(notes) also has missed two games for the Flyers after tweaking a groin injury and Ryan Parent(notes) has missed three games with a groin strain before returning for two periods on Saturday.

He re-injured the groin and could miss another week.

This is a reason why i hate most Pittsburgh fans. Most of them are complete arse holes and won't admit it. They are the first to talk trash when their team wins, and they are the most obnoxious people at doing so but when their team starts to fail the "oh wait, Pittsburgh has a team, when did this happen"

How quickly they forget that they abandoned their penguins and were about to move to Kansas city, if i recall the location correctly, until Mario stepped up and saved the team. take a lesson from maple leafs fans, they have supported their team no matter how badly they have failed (and have done so since the last season there were 6 teams)

Unless you have stuck with your city's teams through good runs AND bad you have no right to talk smack about any other team. When the penguins start to fall back into another 6 year failure streak, i wonder how many people will stick by them and how many will go the "what is hockey, i have never heard of this" route.

This post is not toward the 7k people who still showed up at the penguins games when they were failing. This is at the bandwagon hoppers who just learned that Pittsburgh has a football and a hockey team.

no matter what you say about philly and its teams and fans, you KNOW the fans are infinity better than most of the fans from Pittsburgh

to all the pittsburgh fans , you won the cup . you have a great team granted , superstars . but why so offensive when flyers win . all you do is bash us . but heres one fact about pittsburgh . you all talk about steelers and penguins , do you have a baseball team . why dont you talk about it , or is it because there not in the running for anything . listen , quit the hating your teams are good you would have never won if you werent . flyers are a very good team do we have the superstars you have maybe not . but we have players that are very talented and young players that have a lot promise .lets just enjoy the season and good luck to you . when flyers and penguin meet always great games . your the champs till someone knocks you off . this might be the year we do flyers all the way .

Fun Fact - it took PIT 25 yrs to get to the final round....and needed a savior. then for lets say 10 years they (PIT & its fans) were nowhere to be found on the radar! then magically, a new savior was born (handed to you) and the PIT fans came out and said "hey, we were here all along. we were just watchin football."
i mean really do any of you "fans" wear any others jerseys besides #87 #71? you've had some of the best players, and all you ever see is crosby, malkin jerseys. no 66, 68, 77, 10 or even a 20. that shows a lil bandwagonism right there. go look at any other teams' fans and you will see 30+ yr old jerseys of players past, even some not so great players jerseys, fans wear for whatever reason. not so mush in Shïttsburgh, they only know princess, malkin and fluery.
    how but dose Pirates?

@40 Yeah I actually did, remember back in the early 90's when we had players such as Lemieux, Francis, Jagr, Coffey and Barasso just to name a few? We won two cups back in those days. Hey pop quiz, name how many Stanley Cups the Filthadelphia Flyers have won in their history and in what years they did so.

Lol at what I read sometimes. Go to Western Pa. and you'll run across a very large number of knowledgeable sports fans. One thing that Pitt has is that it's a large city with somewhat of a small town atmosphere. That being said, some of the best fans are from cities like that as opposed to larger cities with a lot more going on--ie: LA (where the masses are too consumed about what they're wearing or who they're going to TRY to impress on any given day, or what they're driving, etc. Go Steelers and Pens!

I love how people talk crap about crosby. Gretzky said that he watched crosby since he has been 15 and that he will be the next me. Mario let's him live with him but what do these guys know the only two of the best players ever. the only talent the flyers have is carter and richards the rest are just gooners. Afterall crosby was only the youngest captain in nhl history to hold the cup but apparently that doesn't mean anything.

LOL @ "@ 36 - Fun fact. Did you know, Pittsburgh had a hockey team prior to two years ago?"

The WORST fans in all sport. They talk like they know, but they fail to see what even players say about Philly.

They all hate us til they come to Philly then they get it. NOBODY supports it's teams like Philly and Pitt barely kept their team, now they act like they're real fans.

    Yeah, OK... LOL

Keep in mind both trips to the cup they had to beat WHO? Oh yeah we suck, so that means Pitt is only a littl better than "suck". Hmmmm possibly.

If the flyers keep this up I might have to agree with a trade. Maybe pick up another D man because the rest of the team has, so far, been picking up the slack. They haven't been facing the best of teams, but if it keeps up and they beat some top teams a better D can help more than another goal scorer.

Gagne is a great player always has been. how many of you guys posting comments have ever had a hernia. It sucks and needs to be fixed they're common in hockey players due to the quick lateral movements, awkward hits, ruts in the ice etc. it was a bad break thats it

@ 35 hahahaha jealous of the talent you guys have? Thats a good laugh right there. If by talent you mean being so idiotic that Sean Avery calls you a clown as he did say about Hartnell or having a goalie who is on crack, literally, then no one wants your kind of talent.

This is one guy that I actually do feel bad for. He has to play in Filthadelphia with all their Filthy "fans" and on top of that he is always gettin hurt even though he is an awesome talent. I wish him luck I really do, hopefully he can get out of that sh!t hole someday and start new somewhere else.

To the rangers fan, laugh now because the big trade you got with the wimp from minnesota will be another flop when will reiger learn? Jagr, Drury, Gomez, oopss Gagne having that is a problem, briere was out last year because of the same thing. However flyers have the talent and back end to do damage in the east this year. I predict the stanley cup will be won this year in 16 wins ;)
