Terrifically odd scene last night in the third period of the Vancouver Canucks' 4-1 victory over the New York Rangers: Marian Gaborik(notes) gives Ryan Kesler(notes) the weakest slash to the leg in recent memory, sparking a fight-less melee during a line change that actually had 10 players on the ice for New York.

Once that situation was defused -- and it did look like it was going to boil over a few times into an old school 1970s sprawling slugfest -- the action moved to the benches, where Canucks defenseman Shane O'Brien(notes) decided to nudge Sean Avery(notes) with his lumber. From CBC Sports:

Because of the line changes, there were 10 Rangers against seven Canucks on the ice, and it resulted in five 10-minute misconducts, including one to Shane O'Brien for poking New York agitator Sean Avery with his stick from the benches, and a minor penalty to Kesler. "I could comment in a multitude of ways but I've already talked to [general manager Mike Gillis] about it and he told me he was going to deal with it," Canucks head coach Alain Vigneault said.

Clearly, the scars of 1994 have yet to heal. Not mentioned by the CBC: Avery snatched the harpoon from O'Brien and tossed it onto the ice while his mouth continued to move at the speed of sound.

The misconducts at 4:21 of the third were given to the Rangers' Dane Byers(notes) and Dan Girardi, and the Canucks' Kevin Bieksa(notes), Alex Burrows(notes), Kesler and O'Brien. Here's the video from TSN of this strange, hypnotic non-brawl; the Avery/O'Brien fun is about 2:45 into it:

Meanwhile, on the fighting front, check out Darren Dreger of TSN this morning writing about the lack on instigator penalties this season: "Heading in to Tuesday's games, an instigator penalty had been called in 8 of 117 fights. That's one for every 14 fights or 6.8%. Although slightly higher than last season's 5.9% rate ..."

For a second, I thought the video implied that Avery actually backed up his mouth and actually dropped the gloves...good thing to know that the balance of the universe is still in order.

Man I long for the bench clearing brawl days. I know its typical of my fan-hood, but they were great, and in Philly you literally expected at least a half dozen or more a year. Also, is it me or is Tortarella looking more and more like Arthur 'Fonz' Fonzarelli? What is in the water in Vancouver, they are going wild up there, first someone takes one in the neck and then an almost bench-clearer. What's next, snowballs at Santa Claus? You know that is how it starts!

That truly was an odd 10-15 minutes of television. It reminded me of a near-brawl in a bar where you had two groups of guys who are too drunk and incoherent to actually start fighting, so they just tell each other in slurred speech how they can and will do it.
I think my text to Scotty Hockey during the melee was something like "party like it's 1979".

Also, in an eerie connection to Wysh's story yesterday, there were large shards of glass on the ice from a broken pane that were luckily kept away from the Canuck fans... That one piece carried off by the ref in the closing minutes looked like it could decapitate someone let alone stab them in the neck...

Final observation- Ray Ferraro's facial expressions during the incident as he was perched between the benches for TSN = priceless.
I can therefore only imagine what was said... ;)

    Heal!
Avery holding the evidence after instigating that was great.
The instigator is typically only given if one party blatantly started the melee, and since most fights are spontaneous or mutually agreed upon before the dropping of the puck, those numbers seem fine.

What a sad, sad moment for hockey. 17 players on the ice, and less action than a baseball "fight".

I can't believe I went to bed after the second period. I missed all the fun! That's probably the first time in history someone has said Avery didn't deserve a penalty. Don't get me wrong I love the Rangers, but I also love to see Avery get beat up.

The Rangers had nothing. Gaborik was owned by Kesler all evening and finally had a minor hissy fit. Bieksa could absolutely destroy anyone on the Rangers, so could Rypien. I can only imagine what the score may have been if the Canucks were not missing Sedin, Demitra, Grabner, Luongo, Hansen, Johnson...
The Rangers only goal came on the PP of a total b.s. call (I second Daniel #21, how the Rangers get a PP out of that is beyond me). Further, Kesler's goal should have stood (to make it 2-0). Zero kicking motion whatsoever, he was stopping to avoid running over Lundquist.
@ #6 : New material please...the whole "chunk of plexiglass" thing was noted in the "stabbing" blog. C'mon man.
    @ #7 : Agreed, absolutely hillarious.
