Video: Rangers’ Boogaard ends 234-game goal drought

Where were you on Jan. 7, 2006? That night was the last time Derek Boogaard(notes) celebrated after scoring a goal. It was the second of his rookie campaign and last goal until Tuesday night. Since then we've seen five different Stanley Cup champions, two different Olympic champions and 49 regular-season fights for Boogaard.

Making the most of his 4:21/game of ice time this season with the New York Rangers, Boogaard looked like an actual hockey player for one shift, blasting a slap shot past Michal Neuvirth(notes) of the Washington Capitals for his first goal in 234 games:

Hockey fans had the same reaction as Bruce Boudreau: utter shock and dismay at not just the fact that Boogaard scored, but how nice of a slapper it was.

As for Boogaard, who had a late-breaking smile after his goal, he said Boyle was screaming at him from the bench for him to shoot.

"So I shot," said Boogaard, whose cell phone is already filling up with messages. "Hopefully I won't get on a another streak like that."

Boogaard added the last time he scored on a slap shot was when he was 20 in the ECHL. Boogaard had one goal in 33 games for Louisiana of the ECHL in 2002-03.

According to the NHL, at 121 games, Nashville Predators forward Wade Belak(notes) now owns the longest goal drought.
