Video: Minor league hockey plus ‘Jersey Boys’ dance equals cringe

From a marketing perspective, the Danbury Whalers of the Federal Hockey League have our favorite philosophy for a minor-league hockey franchise: No matter how wacky the idea seems, they're going to try it.

Like going back to fictional Federal League roots by having Dr. Hook from "Slap Shot" drop the first puck. Like signing 40-year-old pro skater Mike Vallely last season, and then watching him break his arm in a fight. Like having an official team soda created by the CEO's 16-year-old daughter.

Like creating buzz for their home opener this week with a music video in which Whalers players do a choreographed routine inspired by the Broadway hit "Jersey Boys." Seriously:

Dear CEO Herm Sorcher: If this video produces a discernable bump in attendance, please continue this new Broadway lip-syncing tradition.

We can see no reason why your players can't pull off an elaborate version of "Under The Sea" from "The Little Mermaid" when the Cape Cod Bluefins come to town.
