Video: CBC hits rewind for incredible Coldplay Cup montage

You know how we know CBC Sports is gay? They use Coldplay to open their Stanley Cup coverage ...

And now that we've gotten the obvious hack reference to "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" out of the way, we can focus on how remarkable this montage truly is, as CBC used Coldplay's clip for "The Scientist" as inspiration for a dazzling reverse-video preview for the Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins before Game 1:

Granted, this video has the sort of pond-hockey schmaltz that's one of the NHL's most cliché television sins; but right around the 1:30 mark, this thing just hypnotizes you. How about that shot of the fans "sitting down" as the just-scored puck leaves the net in reverse? Or the little puck ping-pong Sidney Crosby (notes) and Chris Kunitz (notes) play coming into the zone? Or the snow returning to the skates of the Red Wings player charging to the net?

Like "Cup Raise" last year, this is a momentary reinvention of the wheel for a hockey broadcast. Congrats to CBC Sports, and a word of advice: Make this your March Madness "One Shining Moment" piece at the end of the Finals. Begin with the Cup being raised by the winning captain and then, as the song says, we're going back to the start.

Oh, and while you're at it, CBC: No more Dos Equis commercial parodies with Don Cherry strutting around looking like an elderly flamingo. Yikes.
