Dion Phaneuf's open-ice wallop on Kyle Okposo(notes) of the New York Islanders last night has sparked another passionate debate about the legality and morality of such a hit; but it also expanded the argument into one about what, exactly, preseason hockey should look like (or whether it should exist at all).

We pointed to Two-Line's coverage of the hit in last night's post, and his litmus test for the Calgary Flames defenseman's actions is pretty straightforward:

Was the hit legal?

Was the hit headhunting?

Did Phaneuf really need to hit the kid that [expletive] hard considering it's the preseason?

Two-Line says "yes, no and probably not," and he's nearly correct.

Was the hit legal? Islanders goalie Marty Biron said after game that "it definitely looked like feet went up," and they did -- but on impact, not before it. He didn't leave his skates to make the hit, at least from the angles I've seen. Did Dion lead with this elbow, as Lighthouse Hockey claimed last night? I don't believe he did intentionally, but that's not to say his elbow didn't make contact. Watch it again: Phaneuf appears to make contact with almost his entire back to Okposo. It's an awkward, awkward check.

Okposo's positioning plays into this thing, too. On the replay, Nigel Dawes(notes) jostles him from behind as he's carrying the puck, and that puts Okposo in a prone position for Phaneuf's hit. Those defending Dion are making the Lindros-ian "keep your head up" argument about the Islanders winger; it's less that than just being in a vulnerable position at the wrong time. It's a mitigating circumstance; it's not Brandon Sutter putting himself in a prone position before Doug Weight freight-trains him.

It's a legal hit. Debate it's morality or integrity, but it's legal.

Was the hit headhunting? Simply put, this is part of Phaneuf's job description. If he has the opportunity to remove player from puck with force, the team expects him to do it. As Phaneuf told the media after the game:

"He cut through the middle and kind of fumbled the puck and looked down," Phaneuf said. "I stepped up. I definitely thought it was a clean hit."

"You never like to see guys get hurt," Phaneuf said. "But from what our doctors say, he's OK. So that's a good thing. ... It's a big part of my game to play that physical style. When the hit is there, I'm definitely going to take it."

It's not headhunting -- it's a nasty, vicious play in a nasty, vicious sport. And Phaneuf gets paid to make them. But this is a Scott Stevens fan talking here.

Did Phaneuf really need to hit the kid that [expletive] hard considering it's the preseason? Here's where things get a little complicated.

Why does preseason hockey exist? Why does a sport whose regular-season is too grueling and whose postseason is too brutal play a series of fake games leading up to the real ones? We know it's mostly for profit, at least in cities where the franchise isn't tied up in bankruptcy court. But it's also to prepare for the season.

Maybe that means finding your shot or your pad save. Maybe that means finding chemistry with line-mates. For Phaneuf, it means getting prepared to play his style of hockey when the games count, and the Okposo hit is how he plays. Rick Rypien(notes) of the Vancouver Canucks has had two fights in games that don't matter; those are his hockey skills, and this is the time to sharpen them.

So yes, Phaneuf really did need to hit the kid that [expletive] hard considering it's the preseason, because hockey between opposing teams in front of arena crowds can't be played in some benign, half-assed, pacifist manner. Those are called "scrimmages," and if we're worried that players are endangered by inter-squad play then simply make the preseason intra-squad games ... and then make up the lost exhibition revenue by expanding the regular season or the playoffs. Bet the teams will come out ahead in the end.

One caveat: Phaneuf didn't answer the bell for a fight with Pascal Morency(notes), and he should have. Maybe he knew the Islanders player had just come off the bench, maybe he didn't. But lay out a team's Top 3 forward like that in a preseason game, and you need to fight. If it's not part of the Code, it's time for an amendment -- even if the "fight after a hit" trend is a plague on the NHL.

Phaneuf shouldn't be suspended; will Morency? Hockey Fights explains:

Pascal Morency jumped off the bench a little early (as a couple of Islanders were skating towards the bench for a change) and immediately went after Phaneuf. Morency never got his fight, but did pick up a double roughing and game misconduct for his troubles. From the one shot in the video, it appears the Islander players may have turned around and joined in the scrums that were forming. Why is this important? Any player who leaves the bench to fight receives a 10-game misconduct and a fine. Morency clearly wanted to fight, but with the line change coming and the fight never happening, it's unclear if the NHL will apply the rule in this situation.

Maybe they'll suspend him for 10 games that don't really count for anything ...

Morency should definitely be suspended at least ten games; Phaneuf's hit was clean, and Morency's reaction hearkened back to the buffoonery that used to run rampant in the League. Fans paid to see that game, should they have settled for third-rate scrimmaging? You play hard all the time, whether it's preseason, the regular season, or playoffs, and Phaneuf was just playing hockey. Get over it. How is a dude supposed to reckon the context of the game during a split-second play at center ice? It's instinct, a clean hit, and Kyle Okposo should've learned in bantams that you don't skate through the neutral zone with your head down, especially when Dion Phaneuf is on the ice.

I am a Rangers fan and that was a total dick move. It is one of those hits that is legal but unnecessary. He already had two defenders on him and it is a meaningless pre-season game against a team that you will only see once the whole year and have no chance of meeting in the playoffs.

ps, some random dude named Theo Fleury scored the game winner in the shootout, and the sell-out crowd went crazy, chanting Theo, Theo...that might be a nice story.

I agree they need to get rid of these pre-season games. The season is already grueling enough and makes situations like this happen. You can't tell a hitter that he can't hit hard because it it just a preseason game it will through them off in the regular season. Make the preseason shorter.

If the NHL removes the 10 NHL vets in preseason rule, it's fine. There's no real need for the studs to be playing in a pointless game, and the limited bench prevents teams from playing them for just a short time like the NFL does.
Preseason is still a great way to see what your youngsters got against other teams. You can't gauge what they've got by playing the same guys all day. Practice against your teammates isn't the same as playing a group of hungry kids who are fighting for an NHL spot.

That was kind of a "sloppy seconds" hit since two Flames were already defending Okposo

He plays for the Islanders; I'm pretty sure that describes all their games.

Why should he have to fight for laying a clean hit on someone ? Why put yourself in the penalty box ? He shouldn't have to fight some no name scrub who wont even see the NHL in his life.

That's why the instigator rule should be thrown out of the rule book. There are plenty of hits that are legal but not necessary. The league cannot punish anyone for a clean but over-exuberant hit... but an enforcer can. Its the only "fair" to try and curb these incidents.

I agree he should have answered the bell, Wysh. You put a guy on a strecher in the preseason and you don't want to answer for that? Big tough Canadian, with a visor, and no interest in fighting a french(sounding) guy. Don Cherry must not be happy about that.

Anyone notice how so many NHLers don't have their chinstraps tight or even touching their chin/jaw? That chinstrap, when adjusted properly, is there to prevent your helmet from popping off upon impact. Bet that Islander didn't have his tightened and that he will next time he skates. ---- Lesson to all NHL players: tighten up that chin strap! Clean hit.

Phaneuf was lining up the hit before the guy put his head down. There was nothing to do but follow through with the hit.
Pre-season games help get players back into the groove for the games that matter and help make roster decisions. What a piece of garbage the first two weeks without a pre-season would be.
Dion did not need to fight. I think the instigator should be charged when someone starts a fight after a clean hit. I'm okay with tough guys going at it and I'm okay with guys starting fights after dirty shots but I'm getting tired of a guy throwing a big clean hit and then having to 'answer the bell'. That's BS.
    Good hit!

Why should Phaneuf have to fight anyone? The hit was legal, you say.
Either a hit is legal or it isn't.
It's some crazy fked up sport where you can make a legal play, then have to back it up with assault.
    Get your priorities straight.

Wysh, you forgot one major point and reason for the preseason...evaluating prospects and on the cusp players. Some guys earn their roster spots in the preseason. Phaneuf, however, does not need to since he's assured to be part of the squad. This is obnoxious not only for the Islanders, but also for the Flames. What if Phaneuf had gotten hurt during the play? That'd be a major blow. So, yeah, he probably should not play as hard.

As #11 points out, if dude's got his helmet on right he probably gets up and skates away. Watch the replay for his helmet (which pops off before he hits the ice) and his head (which bounces off the ice). Hit: Pass. Okposo's equipment: Fail.

    1) it hit was clean, leave it at that
    2) it's the man's bread and butter, he's marketed as a fright train by the NHL in playoffs commercials.
    3) this isn't football with some sissy QB protection rules, it's hockey, our trademark is out mental toughness.
    4) if you are a rival teams fan or an islanders fan your opinion is not credible in this arguement, and bias as best.
    5) NEVER SKATE THROUGH THE NEUTRAL ZONE WITH YOUR HEAD DOWN. rule #1
    6) we already are debating fighting because some hippie cried boo back in the 80's, if we start questioning body checking now, no matter if it's insidental or not, it's a slippery slope that could lead to talk of abolishing that aspect of our sport 30 years from now.
    7) suck it up, lace'em up, and get back out on the ice. Thats our motto. If Okposo got up this wouldnt be an arguement and would probably be louded as the perenial hit of the year and everyone patting Phanuef on the back.
    8) after getting his nuts busted about maybe already being in decline and subsiquentially his team going out and getting another top quality dman that they really didnt need, maybe he felt he needed to reaffirm who he is and his worth to the team and league. I know if i had people questioning my abilities i'd go out and prove them wrong with authority too.
